COSTCO has 8 pack of Mountain House for 49.99
Travel+2 on the stroganoff. This is a pretty decent basic mix actually. You can do better with their Pad Thai etc. But you are gonna pay for it. On a 10 point scale, stroganoff is gonna be a 7 the rest will be 5 or 6. Not AWESOME but nice at the end of a trail.
5 or 6 becomes 7 or 8 after a long day on the trail
So true. Was just talking about that with my roommate. How I would NEVER drink instant coffee at home...but at 7000ft, in my tent, instant coffee is FANTASTIC!
I wouldn't eat any of these at home. But on the trail, these are great!
My peak refuel Sweet Pork and Rice is a damn 10/10 after a long day on the trail. That's the best one I've tried so far
Warming my hands on the backpacking stove while the water heats up. Then a couple breaths of the steam on your face, cozy in your puffer. Then eating that Peak sweet pork and rice? Those are core memories for me.
Mountain house chicken and dumplings might have been the biggest morale boost I’ve ever gotten on trail. Got stuck camping in a little cave thing up on a mountain because it was getting dark. Man that turned my night around.
Y'all're making me hungry (to get out there). Step step step nom nom nom mmmmmmmmmm
I find that most of these meals are easily fixable with a bit of seasoning or hot sauce.
The big exception is the eggs. I am not a fan of the texture of them.
Red pepper flakes and garlic powder make that stroganoff a 10!
Yeah the stroganoff is awesome. I really like the the chicken and rice too even though it's really simple.
Last year they had a chicken and gnocchi one that was amazing. The lasagna was good too. I think it was lasagna, stroganoff, gnocchi and a granola
Personally I love the beef stroganoff.. the biscuits and gravy I’m a big fan of as well. Haven’t had the others though.
Okay perfect, beef stroganoff is my fav meal. I'll definitely look to buy some
Chili mac is an all time favorite in my household.
Breakfast skillet is a close second.
The top tier mountain house meal is the chili mac and beef. So good on its own but so easy to zhuzh up, too.
For my house, chili mac, biscuit & Gravy and Beef stroganoff are high on the list.
PS their claim is their eggs…..I tired to like them and I do t like anything they put eggs in but in full disclosure I’m not huge on eggs to begin with
I'ma big fan of the chicken teriyaki as well. They're all pretty good. Backpackers pantry tastes slightly better but not for the price. My favorite sleeper is the blueberries and granola. It's easy enough to make yourself
Chicken teriyaki has been the starting point for many a tortilla wrap at the end of a day of backpacking for me.
I have had all of the ones in the box before. They are all decent or better but tend to be a bit on the bland side for most people so make sure to have salt and pepper or hot sauce or something. Stroganoff and biscuits/gravy are the best two in this box
The biscuits and gravy is amazing. Seriously, it’s the reason I leave my tent when I’m backpacking.
I’m a big fan of the chicken and dumplings. Always have it on my backpacking trips. Edit: Just noticed it wasn’t one of the flavors. My bad! Still my favorite tho!
They're almost always decent at best. Adjust that for the effect of being very hungry and outside, and they're great.
This stuff is so good that after my backpacking trip I bought a bunch of the #10 cans for my hurricane preps. Sometimes I just eat it after a bad hangover. Beef Stroganoff is by far the best.
I haven’t had anything bad from MH. Even their freeze dried eggs are pretty good. Only caveat is that it’s expensive.
Buy literally any other brand, peak or backpackers pantry are excellent. Mountain house is meh and very light on calories
The expiration date is so far out too. I have a pack I bought awhile ago for emergency food/backpacking.
Well... yeah... it's freeze dried...
Tbf I’ve bought some with no preservatives and with low stability ingredients like powdered coconut milk that last less than a year.
Wow, even if I yeet the biscuits and gravy packets, I'm still ahead.
You can yeet them this way lol
The biscuits and gravy are the best!!!
So good on a cold morning on day 3-4. Especially with hot sauce. I’ve got a Yellow Bird mini bottle from REI that I keep refilling. One of my favorite trail meals
Exactly!!! My wife balked at the 50 til I showed her what I paid for EACH of those Stroganoff at REI!!!
How much at REI???
10.95 per pack
Ouch
That's before things like bulk discounts and EOY cash back. Probably comes out closer to 8 if you buy smartly from REI.. still not cheap though
$9.69 on Amazon. I had to price compare too, probably gonna hit up Costco tomorrow.
Not a fan? I find them to be delicious if you bring some hot sauce to splash on there.
Hot sauce rides 💯
Hot sauce is so key for backcountry food. It makes tuna edible, among other things.
I'm sure you can find some people to take the biscuts and gravy off of you, /r/ULgeartrade would love someone selling a bunch of them.
I feel gassy just looking at this picture
Exactly. Can't deal with this crap at elevation. Farting in your bag all night is a no-go.
Ah yes, ye old altitoots
Everything is beans/chili! WTF!?!?
Not in this 8 pack
Damn. That's an excellent price. What region are you in?
Lacey Washington
They have them at the mother Costco in San Diego, not sure about the other store.
Found it online, Costco app
Ahh, yep. Must be an in store markdown :/
Hell yeah, I'm in CA too, I'm gonna go check it out
We have them in Denver. I got mine a couple weeks ago.
The best part is it is all actual full size meals. No bullshit granola in this pack.
Full sized meals at 600 calories per meal... a joke
Damn I wish they had vegetarian.
Wdym you’re not interested in the meat strokemeoff?
Seconding Good to go. I have Celiac disease and a wheat allergy. Backpacking is HARD. But hose meals are good!
Good 2 Go has some multipacks on their website! My favorite is the Thai curry
Maaan, I'm over here with a Sam's club membership missing out.
Mountain house quality is great and this is a bargain. The problem is Mountain house portions get smaller every time they do a redesign of their packaging. 15 years ago they literally gave you twice as much. My 10 year old daughter will polish one of the current meals off and still be hungry after a day of backpacking. I weigh almost 300lbs so a 400 calorie dinner is certainly not going to even come close to giving me the calories I need. My wife and I switched to peak refuel and we give the kids the mountain house. Again, mountain house makes a tasty meal, but stop skimping on the portions and just charge a little more. Backpackers need their calories.
It would still be cheaper to buy these from TJ Maxx/Sierra.
They have Dinners for $6.99 each and breakfast/Dessert for $5.99
Biscuits and gravy is amazing the other flavors aren't the best but are definitely good ones. Good score
Shrinkflation has gotten these too. I have a box of 15 pouches from 2018, 13 from 2021, and now 8 from 2024. All were right at 50ish bucks.
Not saying you shouldn’t buy this but you can buy a dehydrator for the same price and dehydrate your own meals. Started doing this last year and I’m never going back. Cheaper and better.
I liked mh alot more before I realized how low cal they are. Now I'm just a weekend warrior so none of it matters really but for that bulk I want more calories. Other freeze dried meals have way more. Biscuits and gravy is good tho.
Protip always in the comments 🤣
The same mushy texture food for a year. You would beg for death( if the sodium didn’t kill you).
Sheeeesh
Having to commit to that much chicken and rice would be my own personal hell.
Their stroganoff is amazing
It’s $59.99 delivered on my app. My Costco is 70 miles from me. Hmm
As does Amazon
Close...the Adventure box is a bit different. From Amazon and MH "This kit contains breakfast, lunch, and dinner for one person for two days. With 6 total pouches (12 total servings), just add water and eat in less than 10 minutes with no extra cleanup! Kit contains (1) Granola with Milk & Blueberries, (1) Breakfast Skillet, (2) Beef Stroganoff with Noodles, and (2) Rice and Chicken pouches"
It is $1 less, but you get two meals less (6 pouches vs. 8 pouches) Also, the granola barely counts as a "meal" but ok, whatever.
Oh wow! Thanks for clarification!
It's called the adventure box
Cheaper in the store
ours is 59$
Ouch...but still cheaper than REI.
Some of yall never had the Mexican style Adobo rice & chicken... and it shows.
I bought these too but the protein is shockingly low compared to other brands
I love mountain house but, despite its popularity, I don’t like the beef stroganoff. I’ll have to see if a backpacking buddy wants to split
Sam’s club or costco?
Look for literally any other brand and you'll be very happy with yourself. I've had many and MH is about the worst brand out there as far as taste, texture, cal/g, etc.
Is this what people who hike and backpack take out to eat? wtf man. Admittedly I’ve never tried it but it looks inescapably gross. I think I’d rather carry the extra weight of carrying normal food. Is it that good?
Still a ripoff. Making your own (flavorful and healthy) dehydrated meals is not so hard
Okay!! Going to Costco!!!
And they have a 30 day supply for $500
I’m a good-to-go man myself. Vegan meals and pure ingredients. But good lookin out.
59.99 at my local via Online.
What size servings? Are the packages vacuum sealed?
FINALLY some new flavors. I've been using teriyaki chicken and rice/spaghetti/stroganoff for like 15 years now.
I recommend anyone that likes human food to try Real Turmat. It’ll change your hikes for the better. https://www.realoutdoorfood.shop
Who eats that shit?
Biscuits and gravy is icky :(
Awesome. 3-4 days of liquid shits. What a deal. Get 2 sets and you can shit your brains out for a whole week!
Barf haha
Those that actually backpack agree with this statement.
Lol those meals are awesome after hiking 12 miles at altitude
Still a rip off !
Have you bought MH anywhere else? This is literally 1/2 the price of many places.
Isnt it like 5$ each at Walmart? I don’t buy them often
Around me - walmart sells each of the individual packets in the costco box for 9.68 a packet
Literally Walmart brand, why do people worship this?
Being a Walmart brand isn’t inherently bad. There’s definite correlation but it’s not an absolute
My SO and I have tried many freeze dried meals and brands and MH is by far the worst as far as taste, texture, cal/g etc.
But your original comment made it sound like just being a Walmart brand made it bad. Which is not an absolute. Also, a sample size of 2 is hardly significant. But none of that really matters lol it’s freeze dried food it’s not gonna taste amazing it’s not supposed to. I’m always gonna prioritize real food over the weight I save, so I don’t really even have a pig in this race
Online
I appreciate the link and for home storage, emergency preparation, etc this is an idea. But for backpacking and camping it is a bit excessive and monotonous. Thanks though!
Watch the sodium content in those. I find they are unusually high in sodium. Not sure if it is a by product of freeze drying and preserving or the only way to make them good.
Probably some of both, they’re also used by backpackers who need to replenish those salts

Just a heads up, Costco is offering a $15 manufacturer’s discount for the next week or so for online orders. It brings the price for me from 59.99 down to 44.99.
I'd love feedback on the flavors. Are they decent?
