Dude, I didn’t even notice that..
Rob Lowe outed PS.
Who’s PS?
Patrick Swayze assuming
Assuming context is "Rob Lowe told everyone about how short Swayze is" but idk, just a guess
Why the fuck did you type Rob Lowe and then abbreviate another person's name? Shoulda just said RL
Tom Cruise was vigorously taking notes after this day.
... and deciding on an orthodontist
You leave Rocket J. Squirrel out of this.
It's not his fault his mandible is made for nibbling on nuts.
Good eye. I thought he was tall.
He got that a lot.
Be nice!
Until it’s time to not be nice.
Still the man …

"I used to fuck guys like you in prison". All-time great movie quote.
Pain don’t hurt.
That’s how all the cool guys stood back then.
Yeah, you always had to carry at least two bricks around. More, if you knew you were going to meet really tall people. Was a pain.
And if you were tall, you'd have to carry a shovel. "I played Joan of Arc in a trench!"
Cruise was supposed to block the view but said screw that at the last minute and moved his leg 🍗
Holy crap that’s hilarious
Tom Cruise still with his original teeth.
And needed it to get above Cruise
Who looks like he has purposeful make-up on to make him look like a doofus
That's the "real" Cruise, before he could afford dental de-doofusing.
dental de-doofusing.
lol I love this!
Nobody puts Swayze on bricks
it kind of looks like he only has one foot up on the bricks, kinda like captain morgan style pose. might be wrong though
If it was only one foot, the knee would be bent, but it's straight.
Good catch!
came here to say this haha
Woah! I’ve seen this pic for years it legit made me think Swayze was tall.
And uphill.
No photoshop in the 80s
I just noticed that!
Just think standing on bricks next to Tom Cruise to look taller.
I can now see why Tom Cruise got braces in his 30s (40s?)
And somehow has a tooth in the middle of his face.
Since someone pointed that out, it’s all I see when I look at a picture of him

Well Jack Reacher was damn near impossible to watch knowing how short Tom Cruise is, he's even wearing elevator shoes here and he's still the shortest guy in the picture.
And a core part of the Jack Reacher character is that he solves situations by looming over people silently or sometimes by picking people up and throwing them through windows, taking full advantage of being several sizes larger than the likes of Triple H or Stone Cold Steve Austin.
You basically described all Jack Reacher novels in one sentence. But yeah, Tom Cruise as Reacher seemed like a rather odd choice. Lee Child was perfectly fine with it, though.
“You can’t handle the Tooth!”
Which is very disturbing when you take a close look.
These are false teeth, he did get his teeth fixed but they were okay before that.
Google his high school year book photo. His teeth are fine.
Good lord, I was stuck trying to work out who that was!
His teeth have always been a mess. They tried
Best casting director ever. The star power of every actor in the movie was amazing.
Watched this film for the first time last year and said the same thing. Important to remember that for most of these guys it was their first “big” role in a major studio film, and nearly every one of them would go on to various degrees of superstar status. Janet Hirshenson must have had access to a crystal ball or something.
what film? i scrolled to the bottom and no one just says it outright
The Outsiders
The Reddit special. Never mention what you're talking about and use acronyms whenever possible.
TO is one of my favorite movies of all time
TOIOOMFMOAT too
IYKYK
If you kick you kick
The Outsiders. But don't forget to read the book.
Coppola knows a little something about casting a movie, too, but Hirschenson’s taste and skill made this happen, no doubt.
Just read her imbd page. She crushed the 80’s. Ferris Buellers day off, stand by me, clue, planes trains & automobiles, willow and when Harry met sally. Those are some all time greats…
And don't forget Diane Lane plays Cherry.
It’s an amazing cast
All these guys have had pretty great careers.
Except maybe C Thomas Howell. And arguably Ralph Macchio
Hollywood is conspiring to keep C Thomas Howell down. They know that if the Criterion Collection of Soul Man ever sees the light of day, all media produced since 1986 will be irrelevant
It’s Janet Hirchsenson and if you look at her resume it’s absolutely insane.
For sure
Could you list the actors pls?
From Left to Right
Emilio Esteves, Rob Lowe, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise.
It’s amazing to me that pony boy is the only person in this photo who didn’t go on to become a mega star.
Best teen ensemble ever
Best teeth ensemble ever
Do it for Johnny!
I was still dressing like that till I graduated in 1985!! We were the burnout crowd!! Loved the Outsiders and Rumble Fish, movies and the books!!
Haha. Me and my jean jacket graduated in ‘84
Me and my rolled up jeans graduated in ‘86.
Born in ‘83 and I still dress like this except I use more black. I would cry if i lost my cutoff sleeve denim jacket since it is so worn in, faded and handy with all the pockets. Emilio has his Mickey Mouse shirt and I have a Little Mermaid one 🤷♂️
We studied the book in year 9 (1989)
Rumble Fish was the shit! Motorcycle Boy>Pony Boy
S E Hinton. Great books.
TBH I was a soc but I recovered later.
The author of the book, S. E. Hinton is active on Twitter. And she doesn't take any shit from 8th graders looking for insights for their book reports...
Well when she was in 8th grade she was writing best selling books, of course she's not going to sympathize with kids who can't even handle a book report.
lol! I don’t remember watching the movie but I know I read the book. Probably around the 8th grade too.
Love how short Tom Cruise looks before he got to the status that he could demand boxes to stand on to appear taller.
Them teefers ain’t helpin neither!
I think I heard the whistle
Yeah… those beaver teeth be on point. He needs to find a sequoia and start chomping away.
Can chew an apple through a chain linked fence.
My gramma had buck teeth and I remember her dad saying she could eat corn on the cob through a picket fence.
Those were his real teeth?
The best Tom Cruise is the Ousiders/Risky Business Tom Cruise. Well, that and the Tropic Thunder one.
In every Tom Cruise movie, I want to slap the crap out of him. The character.
But in Tropic Thunder, I felt like the director wanted me to want to slap the crap out of him. It is, far and away, my favorite movie with Tom Cruise in it.
Edge of tomorrow you get to watch multiple Tom Cruise death montages if you're a real TC hater
Your gonna have to get a fuckn binding fuckn UN resolution to keep me from fucking destroying you!
I’m going to need you take a big step back and LITERALLY FUCK YOUR OWN FACE
Drove by the Outsiders house/museum couple of weeks ago. It’s a work in progress, but definitely worth seeing.
Tulsans represent.
Cool I've been thinking of going by and seeing it
L-R: Emilio Esteves, Rob Lowe, Ponyboy, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise
C. Thomas Howell, also in Red Dawn then was in Soul man in black face the whole movie and not sure if he was in another hit. Still a prolific working actor to this day.
The Hitcher (1986), with (the late) Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason-Leigh
Good road-thriller for its day, especially for the older teen set, while the 2007 remake apparently fizzled.
Hobo With A Shotgun, amazing Rutger Hauer flick
Hitcher was one of my favourite 80s films.
Recurring role in Criminal Minds.
Wasn’t C.Thomas in TAPS, with Tom Cruise ?
Don't sleep on Diane Lane, not pictured.
Funny I also don't know Ponyboy's name but I also know him as Tyler from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
I was trying so hard to figure out which one was Matt Damon...
Turns out I just can't read.
Lol how did they all have such successful careers and I don’t even know who that guy is?
Good movie even better book
I will always remember both, because I read/watched it as I was starting to understand my sexuality
I remember that Soda Pop was always described as beautiful and gentle and when Pony Boy was cold, Soda Pop would cuddle him so they could stay warm at night...
So, of course I had to watch the movie
Little did I know that Rob Lowe, who was fucking beautiful and played Soda Pop had a VERY brief nude scene, that I had to keep rewinding on my VHS just to pause at the right moment
...and yet, it still took me years to accept that I was gay
Look, I believe you’re gay, but I’m not sure thinking Rob Lowe is beautiful is a good metric for measuring your gayness, ya know?
He was a beautiful man.
Recognizing beauty and wearing out a vhs tape over it are at different levels.
Fair
He still is very fucking beautiful. Even in the Atkins adverts.
Honestly I stopped watching movies or even much commercial TV, I was scared that maybe he’d gone a full Mickey Rourke
Lol, he sits somewhere on the "Ryan Reynolds spectrum" of men that straight men can still fuck?
Yea, he can throw a look thatd make a nun wanna fuck
I will always remember both, because I read/watched it as I was starting to understand my sexuality
-Honeydewinmyass
Swayze, one of the actors we lost I miss the most
Too bad none of these guys turned out to be big stars. They had talent!
Can I tell you my favorite Matt Dillon story real briefly?
disgusting fart noise
Yes!
Drugstore cowboy where he gets fucked up with Burroughs?
Whoooooooaaa
Evidently S.E. Hinton has the rights to the movie to make sure a remake never happens, good for her.
When I stepped out into the bright light, from the darkness of the movie theater…
Close, but not quite.
"
“When I stepped out into the bright sunlight, from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home...”
Oh, you were just missing "-light" and "house"
It's in my head cos I read a different book last week that had the line in it twice as well.
I was just referencing Tom Cruise’s by performance in this film tonight to my daughter as an example of how he can take even a small role and turn it up to 11 to make an impression (we just watched Tropic Thunder).
Man, the Outsiders was a awesome book
It's funny how Tom Cruise was the ugly one out of the bunch with his horse teeth
Can you imagine what it would cost to do this movie now (assuming reanimation of the dead).
What a fine day that would be..good grief
My 6th grade teacher read this book to us over a few weeks and I never listened as well as I did during those story times haha. Then she showed us the movie afterwards and man that Dallas Winston scene :(
Tom Cruise looks like he was chewing on rocks.
The least intimidating gang of all time
Omg Tom Cruise cracks me up in that pic every time I see it!
This was the earliest brat pack (1983), before the media invented the Brat Pack label two years later after the John Hughes movies. C. Thomas Howell (17), Matt Dillon (19), Rob Lowe (19) were still teenagers; Tom Cruise & Emilio Estevez were 21; Ralph Macchio was 22; Patrick Swayze was 31.
Don't forget the rest of the young cast too: Diane Lane (18), washed-up teen idol Leif Garrett (22), future screenwriter Darren Dalton (18), 80s actress Michelle Meyrink (21) &, in small cameos, future scream queen Heather Langenkamp (19), Sofia Coppola (12), Melanie Griffith (26).
I remember the teen rags of the day (16 Magazine, Teen Beat, Tiger Beat, et al) giving the movie massive print coverage.
I read this book in seventh grade, it was very new. Maybe brand new. It got passed around and I think everyone read it. We were totally confused by how to pronounce ‘socs’. We thought it was socks. 😀 Everyone wanted to be greasers.
It came out in 1967, and was written by the author when she was a teen.
I also read this book in seventh grade. I loved it. I must’ve read it at least 15 times that year. I still have my original copy from 1973. I haven’t read it since, but man, it really spoke to me when I was 12.
Socials!
Bad ass Mickey tank u got there Emilio
Staggering amount of starpower.
These guys are in peak physical condition for the time.
I’m 57m, troublemaker in school, and solidly identify with this
Right there with ya
well, maybe you're getting in so much trouble in school because you're 40 years older than all the other students!
Lmao this book is banned in Florida schools for some reason. I loved it as a kid.
Well, Florida
yI'd like to see the deleted scenes. Rob Lowe says they cut out his best scenes. He said he felt like he was hardly in the movie. He was crushed at the Premiere.
Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.
C. Thomas Howe
By looking at him, probably
The greasers
Before Tom Cruise got his teeth fixed to Hollywood standards.
On a side note - just started reading this again for about the umpteenth time (that’s a scientific term 😉).
Fiftyleven
Tom pre dental overhaul.
I was in love with all of them back in the day. Sigh.
$300000 in veneers makes a big difference
Apart from Cruise, who was the most successful actor of this group?
I say Matt Dillon.
Change my mind.
Swayze
I’m thinking Rob Lowe. St Elmo, West Wing and Parks n Recs alone were some of his more successful performances.
Emilio looks like Charlie Kelly
Watched this with my dad when I was little. He made a point that there are seven greasers there but not a single Mexican.
He said Emilio Estevez didn’t count.

Tom's teeth are yelling at me!
Great Movie
Better book! Haven't seen the movie in ages, but it had that 80's campyness to it IIRC.
Book now banned at select public school locations across the country.
Toms teeth... And he's wearing heels and still so short! Looks so different now. This is what, 40 years ago but he roughly only looks 15 years older now.

Classic
More box office in this photo or the Expendables?
What a great movie. Just watched it a couple months ago.
My kids had to read the book in high school.
I just read this book after watching the movie and it moved me so much. My grandpa used to say he was a greaser growing up but, like, not like those singing guys.
I loved that movie!
Like 80% of those guys are in one cult or another now.
Watched this against my mom's wishes at older sister's friend's house when I was 10 1/2. Legend. ✊
Tom Cruise’s snaggletooth…….
Golden book and movie. In school we read this and watched the movie after we were done. This was only around 5 years ago. How times change
I was obsessed with the book when I was a kid. I read it so many times I could recite the first few pages from memory lol
Maybe tmi but sodapop was my sexual awakening. I watched this movie in class like 😳🫠
I could swear it was “Stay Golden Ponyboy”???
This casting director should be given an Oscar
I forgot all about this movie even though I absolutely loved it!
Also my gf has a tattoo on her inner arm that says “golden”, that she said was inspired by that line. Im thinking about getting a matching one.
S E Hinton got Matt Dillon cast in this and they are still besties, apparently.
The outsiders is my all time favourite book, I’ve reread it so many times. But I actually didn’t know there was a movie adaptation! I saw this post and went and found the movie online and watched it for the first time. I was a little concerned that it wouldn’t do the novel justice (like many adaptations) but it seems to follow the book really tightly and the cast is spectacular! I’m so happy I saw this post!
Swayze standing on bricks to look taller. Lol.
