I know he's on many pods - which one is this ad on?
I heard it on Threedom I'm pretty sure
He's the best! I've only heard that ad once so far, but it's so long! It really stood out to me because of how it just kept going and going and going. I swear at one point I was expecting him to tell us he mixed some of it with his dead parents' ashes and now they're alive and kicking again.
I'm overseas so I don't get many ads on US podcasts, but with Lemonada podcasts I always get the most ads of all, and they're so bad, and sometimes for pretty sketchy products too I feel. But maybe that's podcast ads in general and I'm lucky to miss out on those because of my location?
I feel like the sketchiness factor has really increased with podcast ads generally, at least in the US. I was getting incessant ones for fillers for a year. I’m delighted for everyone to get paid, but boy do they stick out!
Yikes, happy to not have to hear those! Let's hope Paul sticks to selling us e-bikes and supplement powders 😅
Hard Fork was absolutely incredible today, I almost want to listen again. Casey out-sassed the AI friend, naturally. And I want to know what Kevin’s “tea time” group chat talks about.
The conversation with Turing made me chuckle audibly which is a rare occurrence for me with podcasts. Also for some reason it is especially funny to me that despite the incredible amount of engineering that has gone into this chatbot, it still says "oz" instead of "ounces".
Unintentionally fascinating ep of Las Cultch this week, they get a reading from a psychic medium and air the whole thing on the podcast. It's obvious the guy is a total conman (how could he know that people Bowen and Matt's age might have a relative from an older generation who died of cancer???), I found it uncomfortable to llisten to Matt and Bowen respond with such credulity.
This is one of those times where I wonder if they have as much say in their guests now that they’re on a bigger network and everything. Matt I can totally see being swayed by it, but I did get the vibe that Bowen was… being polite. He just gave very vague and sparse “oh wowwww” and asked questions out of curiosity. I also imagine it’s easy to be convinced in the moment with a person like that, then think back on it later and be like “absolutely not.” Either way, unintentionally fascinating is the way to describe it
The host of one of my favorite podcasts talked about getting a "past lives" reading. Everyone thought it was interesting while she was telling the story. It was pretty ridiculous but seems harmless in the grand scheme of things.
Anything having to do with psychics or mediums seems like a real slimy cash grab. Those people prey on their clients more often than not.
Didn't one of them get conned by a psychic?
Yes! Matt did. They talked about it a few times. In light of that, having a "psychic" on the show is kind of wild.

There is one for every month since then - I think your patreon must be having issues!
I just binged The Competition. It's about girls competing in the DYW (Distinguished Young Women, fka America's Junior Miss pageant). It's by Shima Oliaee, who produced Dolly Parton's America, and who was herself a former contestant. Highly recommend.
Thank you for recommending this. I listened to ep 1 and I am hooked.
I was in my local Junior Miss pageant back in 1995; we all had to have our dresses made so that they looked the same, luckily my mom was good with a pattern. I think I got a $50 savings bond for all the hassle.
Drop Dead Gorgeous is one of my favorite movies so this podcast sounds right up my alley. Thank you for the recommendation!!
I was on the fence and you’ve convinced me- thanks!
Shout out to SUP for staying in a place of lols instead of a place of Zuul while recapping this season of VPR. It’s one of the most consistently funny series they’ve done in some time, and it was a nice reprieve from the super serious and toxic place the fandom has become.
I'm in a place of lol with their Valley recaps and especially their impressions of Brittany. DAYTE NOIGHT and Gerding are killing me.
You seeeee your gyppsyyyyy being the only line of the song that Kristen knows makes me lol. Rock and roll.
Agree 1000 percent. They said my exact thoughts about all of the Bravo fan accounts saying this season has set up a redemption arc for Sandoval. Like are they watching the same show that I'm watching?! That man is a demon...and I never want him off my tv.
I wish the finale recap ep had been longer.
Me too, the VPR recaps have been SO good and this one felt a little phoned in
I think both of them were treading lightly because they were afraid of the stans, even Lara, which is rare.

I have it in my queue but I’m still catching up on my podcasts from Monday on. Looking forward to it though
Echoing the thanks, very interesting topic & i love Jamie Loftus!!
I find her incredibly smart and compassionate, but she needs to edit her episodes down. I thought this of her previous podcasts as well.
Yes, same! I did enjoy hearing about how the Gregory brothers conduct their business, and it was certainly relevant and super interesting, but the Kimmy Schmidt detour didn't bring much to the table (and this is neither here nor there, but that guy always felt more inspired by Dee 'ain't nobody got time for that' Brown than Antoine Dodson to me, maybe because of the age).
I assume there isn't really anything you can do about it, but the sound of ANY remote interview with a poor connection makes me want to break stuff. Triggers too many memories of terrible work zooms/lockdown era digital happy hours lol.
Agreed. I enjoyed the episode but it felt long. She added a LOT of context and background that could’ve been cut. The strength of the episode was her talking to Antoine and hearing from him directly.
Oh I love her! Thanks for the rec!
This is right up my alley!! Thank you!!
I didn’t know this was out so thanks for posting this! Everything Jamie touches is gold. I can’t wait.
Of course I had to post about it here, but I think Becca's bit about looking at Reddit in today's Bad on Paper episode was actually really good and really relatable! It was nice to hear her actually be vulnerable and raw about it, and I think she handled it perfectly. A lot of influencers are quick to say ThE tRoLlS oN rEdDiT but the obvious answer seems to be...it's not for you, don't look! And I'm glad Becca could acknowledge that, but I also understand her VERY RELATABLE impulse to look anyway, I'd do the same thing!
Same! I thought the whole episode was so much better than usual because it felt a lot more like a conversation between them two - and Becca being vulnerable certainly helped that a lot. I don’t expect a host to constantly bare their soul in order for the episode to be good or anything, but Becca is usually kind of snippy and low key condescending towards Olivia, and this one felt a lot more heartfelt.
I think the speculation about her personal life last week was out of line, but I agree that critiques about the podcast (and the published book) are valid
Whatever is going on has to be about her book right? She talks nonstop about and she didn’t mention it all the last two weeks if I remember correctly. Whereas Olivia is my humble queen who has a more anticipated book coming out and doesn’t toot her own horn at all about it. Should make things a little awkward between the two of them. Becca’s enthusiasm for Olivia seems a little forced.
I actually don’t have a problem with either of them tooting their own horns about their own books on their own platforms. Personally I wasn’t a fan of the Christmas Orphans Club, but I’ll reserve judgement on the upcoming books until I read them.
Becca always seemed like a soothing sidekick behind Grace’s grating voice and accent (I like Grace fine but her voice is tough). Becca steered the ship of the podcast and was calm and well-spoken. She provided encouraging commentary to Grace’s career and unpredictable influencer life.
Now (for me) Olivia has taken over that role where she is the soothing sidekick to Becca. Becca still is definitely the more dominant co-host, but Olivia’s side commentary is always calm and encouraging towards whatever Becca is doing. Becca’s life used to be really stable and now her author life is a little more unpredictable; similar to Grace’s influencer life. Olivia is the easy-going one now that guides Becca along with support.
I’m all about promoting yourself but it’s literally ALL Becca talks about. Whereas Olivia had a book in the works the entire time Becca did and said very little about it until it was ready to pre-order. And it’s trending to be much more successful than Becca’s which I’m not pitting them against each other but Olivia had some restraint in not exhausting the audience before there was anything tangible. Just my opinion obviously but I really respect the way Olivia handles herself.
totally agree - becca has made writing books her whole personality, and she does this with alot of stuff
Yep. Bad look if whatever “happened” is about her book deal. I really don’t wish anything negative on her but maybe a good reminder in keeping some details to yourself and highlighting other aspects of yourself and life to the audience (ala Olivia)
couldn’t agree more. and becca never was a writer before? like she randomly started romcompods in the pandemic, and then all of a sudden she is writing books. not saying you can’t pivot, but olivia has been clear she’s always been a writer and this was a dream of hers, but with becca it felt like a whim that then became her new identity. we’ve talked in this group before about how writing books is hard and authors who have written many books sometimes never get deals or find success, so the ease with which becca just got a deal on the first book she ever wrote was always grating to me. so i don’t wish her ill will in any way, i do think she had it easy and doesn’t acknowledge that.
Not to mention that Becca absolutely got her deal (and a really good one at that) because of her successful podcast and media connections, not solely on merit and luck. That is absolutely fine and common, and it speaks to her accomplishments in other aspects of her career, but it's different than the narrative that she just woke up one morning, decided to become a published author, and was able to magically pull it off.
It will always be amazing to me that she was able to quit her job and live off her book deal in nyc. That’s just wild! There’s very few authors who can do that.
(Going off that she and Olivia and Grace have all said the podcast doesn’t make a ton)
I agree, I definitely empathized w her. I also hope that she doesn't totally conflate personal criticism w general critique of the pod. I think there's a difference between comments like "ugh becca is so cringe" and comments like "i don't understand why this ep is structured this way, this episode felt weird, what was that, etc" — though I'm sure when the pod is your baby and you are a "face" of it you probably feel the same level of bad about all types of comments. at some point the pod is a product, they sell ads (and now merch) for it, and public convo about its merits/flaws is to be expected. at the same time, forums like this aren't always 100% fair and def get snarkier than anything she'd hear to her face. idk it's all very weird! but again, just hope that she's able to see the nuance there and doesn't feel bad about it for too long.
Yeah I think a lot of us are genuine fans of the podcast and just want to talk about it with someone, not unlike how they use the podcast to talk about things that they watched or listened to. I get that it’s under a snark page, and I’m also very sensitive so I feel like I would lose my mind if I found a Reddit thread about me, but the conversation about podcasts here seems pretty measured.
Any pop culture podcasts out there that have covered Drake v. Kendrick? I'm dyinggg to hear some thoughtful, intelligent takes on this whole debacle. I can't take one more "Drizzy playin 4d chess" or "W Kendrick bro" instagram comment. 😑 This is the biggest thing to happen in music culture in a long ass time, damn near an unprecedented event in hip hop history, given the nature of the claims made in each artists' respective diss tracks, and it's fully worthy of a roundtable discussion by pop culture pundits knowledgeable about the situation. Any recs would be very appreciated.
Vox did a pretty good one!
Open Mike Eagle did a good break down of all the songs and gave context in a video . Not exactly a podcast and unfortunately a section of it is muted but I still think it's worth a watch.
I haven't listened yet but Everyone's Business But Mine.
Thank you all!! These recs are great!!
Trend Lightly discussed it on their episode this week and dissected the lyrics :)
These were fascinating, if a little bro-ey.
I haven't listened yet, but NYT's Popcast just dropped a Deluxe episode on this.
Commotion had a recent one that was good!
Did Kendrick win the beef? And Seinfeld says the 'extreme left' killed comedy by Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud | Podchaser
Also touched on it in this one: Do true crime stories help or exploit? And unpacking Drake's new diss track by Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud | Podchaser
Awesome! Never heard of this one! THX!
I really enjoy it. Intelligent and nuanced takes on a lot of pop culture happenings. Infused with the perfect amount of humor. Highly recommend! 😊
Last week’s episode of “The Read” did
This episode ended up being my favorite out of the ones suggested. They pretty much felt exactly the way I did about everything and I was cracking up while walking my dog. Lol
They are hilarious! And almost always have the right take!
Oh shit I thought the read had ended for some reason. Thank you!!
Project's Brazen's Fur and Loathing is live! They are the network that did The Professor, Dynamite Doug, The Sound, etc. I love their shows, they are very professional and well done.
Loved the first episode. It's about a gas attack at a furry convention at a hotel in Chicago in 2014.
How have I never heard about this!!?? Running to download thank you.
I really enjoyed today's This Podcast Will Kill You. I've known for a while that the supplement industry is under-regulated, but I had no idea how under-regulated it is. I would have loved for them to dig in a bit more into the relationship between supplement sponsorship and anti-science/anti-vaxx discourse that they began at the end, but I totally get that it's not totally in their wheelhouse.
I deeply appreciate that TPWKY knows what’s in their wheelhouse and what’s not and will (usually) not get too into things they’re unknowledgeable about. They’ve actually covered a few topics I do research in and they did a really great job, although I wish they’d gone a bit deeper. But I cannot overstate how much I appreciate that they know when to stop!
Theres a lot of well meaning podcasters who have absolutely no idea what they’re talking about, especially when it comes to scientific research. But they state their opinions with such confidence… sometimes you’ve just gotta turn the podcast off.
If you don't already I'd definitely recommend following Dr Jen Gunter on various platforms bc she posts a lot about this.
Yeah I've listened to episodes of Conspirituality here and there depending on if it's a topic that I'm interested in. I feel like it's be a great topic for Behind the Bastards/Maintenance Phase tbh.
I haven't listened to Behind the Bastards! I won't go too hard on Maintenance Phase here but suffice it to say, unless they hire a fact checker or have an expert on the pod, I would be very wary of anything they put out that is related to science or wellness.
I know people have issues on how they talk about hard science (for lack of a better term), but I think something that is more about how information (or lack thereof) is communicated is where they shine like their episodes on RFK/the rise of apple cider vinegar.
I respect that! I just personally have found they put out a lot of misinformation, so I'm wary of them. But I know I'm in the minority!
Where can we go for great Met Gala coverage today/this week? Open to anyone but Comments by Celebs (too fawning) or the Toast
Keep It! had a brief discussion on today's episode!
Infinite Scroll did a brief (but good) episode on it
Somewhat OT but I'm really liking Infinite Scroll's new shorter format.
Agreed! I enjoyed the banter with Jordy and worried it would be as enjoyable without a co-host but Lauren is doing such a good job on her own so far.
I do miss the chattier Thursday episodes, but I’m really liking the daily mini sodes!
Idk if it’s great (haven’t listened) but RingerDish’s Jam Session has a pod up!
Honestly I'm fine with networks repurposing the feeds of completed podcasts to host different shows as long as the old episodes are still available in the feed, but I went through my subscriptions and I'm subscribed to at least half a dozen podcasts that I've never heard of with absolutely no indication of what show used to be there. I want to recommend your old (paid for and fully produced) content to my friends; let me see what I used to listen to!
I noticed that Christy Carlson Romano ended Vulnerable and started a new pod this week when I didn’t recognize the name of the podcast in my feed!
Similar note, I’m sick of networks cross-publishing shows to multiple subscriptions too.
I will on occasion listen to the One Tree Hill gals’ podcast Drama Queens, but they’ve started pushing Sophia Bush’s Work In Progress podcasts to that subscription, in addition to the WIP subscription list (at least on Apple Podcasts). Almost makes me not want to listen to either shows.
Yes, Pod Meets World is now always uploading Will's podcast with the girl from Cheetah Girls and I don't want it!
Yes, this! I like The Ringer's Trial by Content, but the few times I was subscribed, I kept getting one of their fucking football shows overriding the feed? And it was stuck to my feed like a leech because I couldn't just simply unsubscribe. So consequently I'm just really behind on it.
Their reality TV feed is the worst about this because it publishes like 4 separate shows on wildly different content and it drives me insane. I don’t want Johnny Bananas’ show!!
Not to spark an argument about how insufferable or not insufferable Kara Swisher is, but mentioning on successive episodes that her son is taking Calc 3 this summer seems a bit excessive. We get it, he's smart.
She was insufferable hosting the HBO Succession podcast. All she did was talk about the billionaires she knows.
I tried her podcast last week because I liked her book and...yikes. I finally turned it off when her takes on the Weinstein conviction overturning lacked any empathy whatsoever.
There are many reasons why I stopped listening to both of her podcasts, but the constant bragging of her kids was a big reason.
Years ago, she had one of her sons on Pivot to get a young person's opinion about some issue (I can't remember what the issue was). It was ridiculous, and I stopped listening to Pivot because of it. I came back for a bit when Elon bought Twitter, but then I had to walk away again because both she and Scott became too much.
Next summer he’ll be in calc 4, otherwise known as, How to Stay Single forever! Oh, that’s good! I’m the Dawg! (Iykyk)
Ahahah you nailed it.
Someone suggested the podcast Beyond All Repair, but I could not get past the first epsiode. There was something very off about the production and the way they are framing it, I think that I am sort of over any documentary type podcast where the creator inserts themself in the story or goes out of their way to bring themselves into it instead of just telling the story. It felt very formulaic and I just want a podcast where they tell a story without the circling around.
I listened to the whole podcast because there was a detail in the first episode that I wanted to see resolved. Frustratingly it never happens! I also didnt love the podcast overall, it would have been much better as a one-part " the opportunist" imho.
Try the rest out on a rainy day. It ends up being not formulaic at all!

Dang! I live in the Midwest and have never gotten that ad before. However, I get a lot of “Discover Wisconsin.” I have discovered it. I know it’s there. I’m good on this side of the Mississippi.
I'm so curious about the recently hard launched relationship of podcasters Payne Lindsey (Up and Vanished/Tenderfoot TV pod company) and Sabrina Deana Roga (Two girls one ghost)
I know it's none of my business, but their divorce time-lines + general (unverified) reports of Payne being an asshole seems messy
I was listening to some back episodes of TGOG and it seems they interviewed Payne in March of 2023 and then again in Fall 2023.
I agree. Something about Payne seems off to me. I am not a fan of these two being together.
I can’t imagine willingly being in the same room as Payne Lindsey let alone dating him
Yes I’ve also been fascinated about this! I saw hints about it a couple months ago
He looked SO much better with his natural brown hair. He looks like Jason Sudeikis in a mid-life crisis with the platinum blond.
As someone who has been listening to podcasts for damn near 20 years, Paul F Tompkins feels like the uncle I wish I had. I have loved everything he’s ever put out. To hear him doing ad reads for the same bullshit supplement powder as every blonde woman on instagram makes me feel really bummed.
