This guy was like " how is being arrested real? Just walk away lol"
If I was there, I would be too shocked to talk
I would try and distract them if they thought about counting.
The only time shiting your pants would be doing somebody a solid.
This is precisely why I maintain a high fiber diet.
It's a good thing I always carry an emergency burrito
For the real shits, you gotta have an emergency Arby's sandwich, extra cheese.
Burritos may give a real true log, but a biohazard is what you really want in that situation. Make the guard feel the need to escape too.
William, White Castle is on line 2 and they are PISSED
Growing up, we joked Whities needed to be eaten right on the toilet.
Those farts will follow you in to another room
into another dimension
Same.
I also would have been too shalked to tock
I would've been a sheep
Snitching in jail is a bad idea lol
I work in a hospital and sometimes patients are running away for one reason or another. I would never intervene. That ain’t my problem that’s security’s issue.
If he snitches chances are they’ll run into each other again at county lol
The guy escaping just gave him some more work and he's already got a headstart on the situation
"Not my job"
He was in awe of his testicles.
That we know about.
No point. They’ll just catch him again, and he’ll get more charges. Where’s he gonna go, except right back home? He doesn’t have clothes, food or money. No phone to call anyone, handcuffs, and prison clothes. Someone is going to see and call it in.
These guys are almost always back in custody with 72 hours.
He is responsible Prisoner!
Nah, that guy didn't see a thing.
That dude must be a believer in "Snitches get stitches."
Why do I find myself rooting for these criminals in situations like this?
Because it's funny seeing people ruin their lives over dumb stunts. Whatever minor issue he was in for originally is now going to have another 5 charges tacked on...
Fun fact: in Germany it’s perfectly legal to break out of prison. You will have to answer for any damaged property or harm you caused or any other crime done while escaping but the yearning for freedom is seen as a human trait and does not get punished.
That is strangled strangely beautiful to me... wow.
Edit: lmao
Scranton strangler loose in the comments!
u/Euphorianio just wanted to strangle something beautiful!
Toby, hide quick!!
I was gonna upvote but your count is 123 and that’s strangled beautiful to me
Guessing there aren’t many for profit prisons there. But it’s funny how countries try at treat prisoners well often have lower crime rates.
For-profit prisons, and forced-prison-labor, in combination are pretty much a US-only thing.
So, do the cops track them down and take them back in? Or are they then free.... because they escaped?
I'd imagine they'd recapture them, they still have to serve their sentence. They just wouldn't tack on extra crimes/time to your sentence. Since it's legal they can't punish you for escaping
They've got umpires just hanging out around the perimeter of all prisons, you make it 1k from the walls and they call "gesichert!" and you're free to go do more crimes or whatever
I heard they are adding "escaping from prison" to the next olympic games.
That might make me tune in!
They track them down and take them back, but if they did no damage and no felonies while escaping, they don't get suplimentary prison time
To become a free man you have to find 3 golden coins before escaping!
Jk, ofc the initial sentence won't get reduced or erased. If caught again, they'll just continue to serve their time
In the Netherlands it's similar to this.
I believe in the Netherlands it's the same
That's not it. Everyone likes to root for the underdog and being we don't know what his crime is it's easier to assume it's minor so we keep rooting for him.
He was a serial puppy rapist
...what breed?
Pitbulls with rabies!
Fun fact - except for in Germany and a few other countries where it's declared a Human Right to "want to escape" prison/gaol.
So as long as he didn't commit a load of other crimes while running away, they'll just look for him and stick him back in
... that's not it at all.
"Fun" to see others ruin their lives? Psycho shit lol
The underdogs. Always rooting for them if their crimes are not heinous or spoken/ambiguous. We always love seeing someone triumph something so unbeateable.
Same assuming it’s some drug charge where there was no victim other than himself
Because it's a power move and super risky so some part of you wants it to succeed in the same way you want some crazy fool to pull off a mad stunt he's attempting.
It's like "oh shit is he really? Oh...oh damn, no fucking way!"
Seeing low odds events feels special and there's satisfaction with seeing them succeed because we have an inherent bias too expect them not to.
You would have loved Ted Bundy. He escaped twice.
Really? I never knew that
He was acting as his own attorney so was allowed to be out of shackles and was left minimally supervised in the court's library, where he jumped out of a window.
Then he somehow got a hacksaw while in jail, cut a hole into the ceiling and used a crawl space to get into a jailer apartment and stole clothes and walked out.
Yes his most violent crime was after the second escape
Sounds like a super cool chill guy!
Because he's the underdog in this situation and humans are hardwired to root for the underdog because of thousands of years of story telling where the underdog is usually positioned as the hero.
We also can relate to the underdog from an emotional POV because there's a lot of cases in life where we feel like the underdog too.
The odds aren't in his favor and everyone loves an underdog.
Hate the game, not the playa
Movies. We are used to seeing the protagonist being the good guy and criminals being misunderstood
are they felons? they could be held without bond or haven't met bond pre-trial.
I wonder if the officer got fired for the negligence
Forced retirement if anything I would think
You don't know much about law enforcement community, I see.
He got a promotion and a raise.
Oh wow, I thought that was only if you shoot someone.
No, for that you also get paid administrative leave.
My grandpa retired as a prison guard, but naw not really
Early retirement with full pension? That's a win!
With a raise
The whole building really, a place full of criminals with only one security? What would happen if they ganged up to stroke him and run away?
Why would they gang up to give him a handy?
Deescalating the situation?
Going to the big house with experience.
A bribe
Deescalate? Wouldn't it lead to a climax?
Countries are full of people being oppressed, why don't they all just gang up and take out the oppressors?
They do, a lot, never seen a riot or a coup?
I like your ideas. I'm hoping we're all starting to realize how much power 300+ million people have
Generally doesn't happen. Prison guards are in actual prison areas with the prisoners, and the guards don't have guns, for obvious reasons.
As long as you are not a super dick guard, all the prisoners know it's just the guards' job. They hold no ill will against the guards. Lots of videos out there where prisoners save guards' lives from all kinds of things.
My guess is these people are not criminals or gang members but petty thieves and such. All minor things.
https://www.unilad.com/news/us-news/benton-county-prisoner-gerald-hyde-escape-court-857362-20240124
He was caught 2 hours later at his friend's house. His original charges wer dismissed, but he got 2 years for running.
His new sentence is also a felony, so he just fucked up his employment opportunities for the rest of his life. Although considering he was originally brought in for meth, I don't know that he had any prospects beforehand.
Then why run away
Prolly had a date?
If found guilty and sentenced to prison, would you willingly go, given the same opportunity to disappear like the guy in the video? I'd disappear. Fuck prison.
Yes, where I would go exactly where I can continue living normally? The rational decision is to just serve the sentence
Meh. Probably not. Because if i was in for something petty, I'd have my life back in a reasonable time frame whereas doing a runner will not only add time, but also make it impossible to pick up your life again.
True. Dudes always looking over his shoulder from now on.
Because most petty criminals aren't too smart or really into long-term planning.
They might be dressed in orange but they too are human beings. This is probably a local county/city jail that houses inmates doing <1 year time (i.e. not serial killers, murderers, and other seriously violent offenders). I do not know this, of course...
Law enforcement in America very rarely have consequences for intentional harm, much less mistakes.
When did they start doing that?
That's the most hilarious comment on reddit today!. Thanks for the laugh. Gnight y'all
I read somewhere that the police found him on his friend house
Hopefully drinking Dew and playing CoD
Most likely smoking weed and filling his belly with diet soda and playing Burnout Revenge for the PS2.
Wow I just saw that episode like two days ago
Modern Cinderella story. Cop comes on the door with his missing orange slipper.
He needed some paper clips to get out of his handcuffs!
Burnout 3 takedown GOAT
How can you be so smart but so dumb?
Yeah dude, I'm going straight to Mexico, cross that shit illegally.
Tbf I never understood escaping from prison as you can never go back to your normal life anyway, but this guy for some reason believed in doing it, but didn't follow all the way through.
He really needed to return some video tapes.
How does feel about Huey Lewis and the News though?
I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Houston. There was a guy who had been living there... hiding out there for 3 years, because he had a warrant out for his arrest that was going to end up with him doing a 60-day jail sentence.
Man lives in a prison of his own mind apparently, and the sentence is harsher than in real life.
"Man lives in a prison of his own mind apparently, and the sentence is harsher than in real life."
Now that is poetry, my friend
I'd consider that a lot of these people's "normal" life isn't that great to begin with and prison life is terrible as well. I think I'd rather start over and live on the street or something.
Start over how while there's a warrant for your arrest and your face and name are plastered on the news?
Its obviously not easy, but a lot of criminals flee. Personally, I'd try to live off the streets and off the grid somewhere.
Whitey Bulger was on the FBIs most wanted list and managed to hide for 16 years. He said "Every day out there is another day I beat them. Every good meal is a meal they can't take away from me." Which might help explain to you why people flee.
Yeah, but whitey was for sure gonna get life in prison and he knew that, so his choices were not that good and he had nothing to lose.
But if you are sentenced to 2, 5, or even 10 years, escaping seems like an irrational decision.
Grow a mustache, start talking with an accent and call yourself Vincenzo from now on. Nobody will ever find out the truth.
The thing is, people in prison are on average not great at thinking things through and considering long-term consequences of their actions
The guy is running out the front door with handcuffs on, no shoes, no cash, a wifebeater and prison pants. Where's he going to go? Somewhere to get the cuffs off, shoes, clothes and cash.
Lol, 2 years in jail after his original charges were dismissed. Rough.
His original charge was dismissed! D'oh!
So the answer to why is meth.
In Germany this would be legal, trying to escape confinement is considered a natural human response and not something that can be outlawed. As long as he doesn't commit any other crimes while escaping, legally he is within his rights.
I doubt it works that way in the States though.
In Germany they had articles about that and concluded that escaping a prison will always result in other crimes being committed, like breaking a door, lock, locking other people in rooms and so on.
But this thread has shown here when they don't need to commit a crime, when the guards made a mistake and forgot to lock a door. If you can walk out like that Germany won't add any crimes on top of your previous crimes. You only left, didn't commit crime. Fair
Same in my country, but the rest of jail time when you come back is hell on earth from what I heard
No shirt, no shoes, no service
No shirt, no shoes, no incarceration.
I feel like he should be free and offered a job in security.
More like offered a job at breaking through security, kinda like hackers get offers to attempt to break into places and find the weak spots
White hat hackers... I THINK that's the name you're looking for
Yup, white hat hacker or pentester
That was actually the premise of the Sylvester Stallone movie "Escape Plan"
I have a colleague who did that. It's amazing how far she gets sometimes. Once pretended to be the new hire and even got a tour from a manager at a "highly secure" company. 😅
He is a meth head.
Most court houses have one if not several officers at the main doors waiting to scan incoming people and watching for suspicious behavior. In any normally staffed courthouse this guy would not have gotten away so cleanly.
"Most" is a strong claim. There is such a wide variety of standards around. Smaller courthouses might just have 1 old guy operating the metal detector... and his job is admittance, so watching the exit isn't really a priority.
It's also a public space, not a prison, so there isn't the same atmosphere of constant alertness/suspicion from gaurds.
I dunno where you guys have been living but everywhere I lived the Sheriffs office was responsible for protecting the courthouse and had officers at the doors. The incoming doors were also next to the out going doors. So even if they were only scanning the people coming in, a guy running out shoeless, arms covered and in front, in his under shirt would raise red flags that would be stopped.
Perhaps this particular one had no more sessions for the day so they literally put their guard down.
When you said “literally put their guard down” it took 30 seconds to realize you didn’t mean they killed the guard lol
They only scan incoming people at my courthouse, and this is for one of the largest cities in the US. For leaving, you literally just walk out.
Like yeah there's half a dozen officers at the front, but they're only there to make sure that nobody brings weapons in.
I come from a city of about 100k (when I was growing up, much larger now) in the US and they never had security or even metal detectors at the front of the courthouse
"that guy sat on my head and everything! I'm pretty sure I was already IN prison"
Idiocracy reference checking in.
No I’m definitely supposed to be getting out of jail today.
That guy sat on my face and everything.
"you're in the wrong line, dumbass" - Idiocracy
Everybody’s shuffling…..
Everyday I'm Shufflin'
Latez
Someone got fired
Haha 🤣
The TV show is called court cam on hulu
Reminds me idiocracy
Legendary
He homer simosoned on out
he's being taken back to jail... OR, IS HE??? narrator could have hyped it up a lil more
It can't have been a serious charge.... or...
It's from a TV show called court cam
He's like, Catch me if you can ... I think I'm gonna walk out of here ... oh I'm gonna walk out of here.
Does anybody know how this turned out for the guy. Was he ever caught?
He was caught 2 hours later at a friends house nearby. The rough part is they dismissed his original methamphetamine charge, but gave him 2 years for escaping
Old dude with the rolling suitcase just shuffling along pretending not to notice a shoeless guy run around him with an awkward no-swinging-arms style run. Perfectly normal. Happens all the time.
kinda based (unless he did one of the crimes i don't like)
Can't believe he thought he could walk away!
In word of mr.deadpool
"Being luck isn't a superpower"(except the early thinking of taking the leap of faith).
The guy got lucky there weren't any proper iq people.
Other titles luck favour to them who tries
Turn a misdemeanor into a felony with this one simple trick.
Where's my sweet context? Come on Reddit, step it up!
He isn't special. I have bear feet all the time.
I remember somebody saying making prisons tougher wont change much. Being looked up is bad enough.
Let me just step to the side bro, I got chu. Hey 💬 If it works out write me 🤣🤣🤣
My god, it's Jason Bourne
Well done sir
He needed to wipe his hard drive before going to prison.
Smoov
Unless the guy is a murderer or other "bad" crimes, this guy should get a get out of jail free card.
This happened at the Benton County Justice Center in Washington state in June, 2015. This guy had just been arraigned, allegedly for meth possession and he was on his way back to jail. He was caught at a friend’s house within 2 hours of escaping.
Attorney he ran by was like “not my fucking job”
Would love to hear what happened to this guy
Good for him
I thought the other guys will follow him
How long was he out?
I assume they caught him.
Guy with the trolly: damn he needs to poop real bad. 😩
Go go go!
Didn't see nothin
What happened to him?
The person who edited this needs arrested.
So many way this could’ve gone down better. Go slower, hide the shoes. Find an object that makes it look like you’re on some kind of duty (a broom or something) and make your way for the exit. I’m pretty sure he got caught so quickly because of all the attention that was caused in the last few seconds at the exit.
My cock is cold, can you warm it for me
lol This is an excellent post title. Well done
That guy works at my local deli now. Still handcuffed and barefoot, but makes a mean bacon, egg, and cheese.
Speaking as someone who has worked with these people, corrections officers are just simply terrible. They really aren't any smarter or better than the people they guard.
Alot of people are not grown, just look old

Love the guy who saw it happen but didn't snitch
