Piute Pass

Howdy,

I'm tentatively planing on taking the reroute using Bishop Pass to Piute Pass. Anyone hiked Piute Pass? What's the trail like? Camping spots? Water? Also what was hitching hiking like from Bishop to Aspendell or the trailhead?

Whitney Exit

I’m headed SOBO with an exit at Whitney Portal. Am I allowed to exit on a different date than my permit? What happens if I finish the JMT early?

Trip Reports?

When can we start expecting to hear from this year's JMT hikers? I start late June, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that would appreciate some into.

On that note, I'll be posting my trip report the second week of July.

Can I combine two permits?

I was able to get a permit for Lyell Canyon (Donohue Pass Eligible). If I can get a permit for Happy Isles->Little Yosemite Valley (No Donohue Pass), which will be released a week before, will it be possible to SOBO from Happy Isles using these permits?

McGee Pass snow pack?

Hey yall!

I’m planning a trip late June from McGee to Lake Mary.

Anyone have any wisdom on snow levels this year or experience going through the pass via McGee creek?

Thanks!

20 degree vs 10 degree bag for a Sept 1st departure?

Going back and forth between getting a 10 degree bag or a 20 degree bag for my September trip.

I currently have an EE Revelation 30 degree that I love and want to get another EE quilt that’s rated colder for this trip.

Will a 10 degree quilt be too warm for a September JMT trip? I sleep cold and my reasoning is I’d rather own a 10 degree quilt and a 30 degree quilt than just a 20 and 30 degree for future trips.

But it seems like most people here recommend 20 degree bags for later season. Curious what people’s thoughts are.

How to resupply as an international hiker?

I won’t arrive much upfront, so I can’t send a bucket. I don’t want to sent it from Europe because it’s expensive. What are my other options?

September NOBO Gear List

Would anyone who's done a NOBO hike in September mind sharing their gear list? Would love to compare to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thank you!

Glen Pass with snow

Assuming snowy conditions will exist on Glen Pass the first week in July, is there any difference in difficulty ascending the pass from the north side vs. the south side, and would either side be a sketchier descent than the other?

Trying to decide which direction for the Rae Lakes loop, which we are starting from Onion Valley.

Thanks!

I really want to hike Mt Whitney!

Hi! I really want to take on a Whitney overnight this year (hopefully mid July). I know that obtaining permits this late is nearly impossible but if anyone out there can give me some tips on how to make it happen this year or maybe have cancelled trips and are willing to pass on a permit to a fellow hiker please feel free to respond to this or reach out via PM!

Thanks in advanced and happy trails :)

Resupply shipping lead time

Hi everyone, am going NOBO from Cottonwood Lakes 8/24. Planning to resupply at independence via Kearsarge Pass/onion valley, MTR, VVR, and Reds.

Logistically, when do people usually ship their buckets to these stops beforehand? Would shipping by 8/3 be early enough? I am based in chicago.

Also, is it worth it to resupply at VVR and MTR, or will only resupplying at MTR suffice? Plan to do 10-12 mpd and zero at VVR.

Thanks!

Permits for week trip out of mammoth

I know this is not exactly the JMT but I am trying to get some information on whether you are able to get walkup permits in Mammoth for week hike from Agnew Meadows.

Recommended bulk dehydrated vegetarian meals?

As the title says, I am looking for dehydrated food for a JMT August 24 days trip. Need to plan food for two for 24 days so bulk packages would help to reduce the cost of the trip.

I am looking for bulk packages of dehydrated trail meals like mac & cheese, some potato poweder, soups, veg protein. It could be also some prep like burritos with some ingredients, protein bars, etc.

Thanks and happy hikes!

Side trip / rest day recommendation near VVR?

Any suggestions for your favorite beautiful spot near the Hilgard Branch / Lake Italy / Rosemarie Meadow / etc.? Thanks!

Water in September

Hey.

I will be thruhiking the JMT in September. How reliable are water sources at that time of year? Will there be a lot of creeks so I only have to carry the day's water or will lots of sources be dried up so I will have to carry extra water?

Thank you for your time.

Going northbound, how well labeled is the trail?

I'm planning a hike of the JMT this July, entering at Cottonwood Lakes. I've been following the trail on Google Maps, and it looks like there are several places along the way where the trail merges with another trail, and you have to make a hard right turn, or sometimes left. Furthermore, using google maps, a couple of times I actually took the "wrong turn" and followed an approach trail out.

So in real life, how easy is it to follow the trail? Are there any times when you don't know which way to go? Or is it all well labeled?

Rain Jacket + Insulated Jacket or Just a Water Proof Winter Jacket

I am hiking the JMT in September. I see that everyone packs a puffy insulated jacket and a separate rain jacket. Why not just pack a water proof winter jacket like the Decathlon Quechua SH100 waterproof winter jacket? I have no idea if that particular jacket is any good. Just an example. For September would this make sense?

Getting from Lancaster to Lone Pine on the weekend.

Hey folks - the title says it all. My permit for Cottonwood Pass is on a monday, and I'm travelling in from LAX (from UK), and just discovered (doh) that the ESTA bus I was planning to take Lancaster to Lone Pine doesn't run on weekends, exactly when I was planning to travel!

(I think I need at least a day in Lone Pine to get there, pick up supplies, post my carryon luggage ahead, etc before I travel up to the trailhead with Kurt or whoever.)

Does anyone have any recommendations for a not-TOO-expensive alternative to the bus?

Assume for these purposes that travelling into a different airport to LAX isn't a possibility.

Shoes for a week on the JMT

I’m contemplating between Flux Adapt trail runner vs Altras? Trying to go more towards barefoot shoes, wide toe box, zero drop. I know Altras are super popular. Anyone tried Flux?
