We currently have a massive main feeder pipe that is busted causing a local state of emergency due to water levels. San Diego is being classy and helping us out big time, much love ❤️.
But as far as staged sports go, they have given us legendary wrestlers Rey Mysterio and Bret and Owen Hart.
Facts.
Hells yeah.
Somebody watched the SD/NY game earlier, clearly...
*last 20 years…
Hey - as a born-and-bred Calgary resident, massive fan of the city of San Diego itself (and hopefully a future resident there when I retire one day), and probably the only dual Cavalry FC (Canadian Premiere League) / San Diego FC fan, I'm crossing my fingers that winning culture becomes tradition for both clubs. :)
On my one visit to Calgary, it was full of nice and friendly people. Clean and safe and pleasant, I appreciated it. The mosquitoes though...
That's crazy haha - Calgary doesn't really usually have a mosquito problem which is the funny part; it's a dry, arid city most of the time which isn't conducive to mosquito environments. Must've come right after a period of heavy rain!
We went to a park and walked into a wooded path. Instantly swarmed.
And San Diego Wave!
Home of the greatest anchorman to ever walk the face of the earth.
I’m Ron Burgundy?
On a less bitter note, they're (along with Edmonton) also responsible for bringing back Light Rail in North America
Could not agree more. Let’s go Oilers!!!
Ahahahahaa my husband plays hockey and we like the flames.
From a Calgarian, thank you so so much. I haven't been able to do dishes, do laundry, bathe my dog, water my plants, make pasta, or shave in 2 weeks. From the bottom of all of our hearts, thank you guys. Truly. Thank you❤️
Have you at least been able to shave your dog, bathe your plants, water your pasta, and make laundry the last few weeks?
That's true! Not everyone has the luxury of not being able to water pasta or shave their dog
Shaving a dog is probably a good idea right now. Easier to keep clean :)
❤️
In some severe storms almost a decade ago my neighborhood had no running water for 3ish days. That was unpleasant. I can't even imagine going 2 weeks without. I hope the new pipe fixes the issue quickly and with no surprise drama. Best wishes to you all!
It's approximated to take another 3-5 weeks, so keep us in your thoughts!
There was a fire in Bowness neighborhood today. That was near ground zero of the break. Been stressful for firefighters. A few years ago there was a fire in a part of bowness that was so old thedidnt have fire hydrants so they had to drive in water from a few blocks over.
Calgary resident here (visited beautiful San Diego as a kid): thank you for having our back here! The Calgary Stampede starts in a few weeks with close to 1.5 million visitors, and this is a major water main, so we’re crossing our fingers that everything goes smoothly. This is helping things go according to plan, so thank you all so much! ❤️
I'll be there for the first time visiting friends. Any suggestions? I've been told to wear flannel.
Drive an hour to Banff, arguably the most beautiful place in the world
Definitely. What about Yoho?
Yoho is also lovely!
And less crowded but we have lost 4 grizzlies to car accidents in yoho including Nakoda, a white grizzly.
Emerald Lake is unworldly beautiful
Shhhh, it’s better but don’t tell anyone!
Shhh I want to find parking this year !
The flannel is just so you look like a local. Flan-o-flage.
Try ginger beef.
Go for a steak at either Ceasars(you must also try the cheesebread here), Chairman's, or Hy's steak house. If you love steak, all 3.
Banff/Kananaskis is just something to experience if you like nature.
Oh and we spent half a million on a blue circle light post by the airport. Our other comedy clubs are ok too.
Hat, boots, blue jeans, have fun and drink lots of local beer. Calgary has over 200 local breweries (if that's your thing) whereas Stampede is fully sponsored by Bud.
There are 44 breweries (many of which are top tier), nowhere close to 200 lol
I should have said in the area* not Calgary proper haha. Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Okotoks all brewing crazy good stuff
You wear flannel and you’ll risk sweating your junk off. Just sayin’.
eat ginger beef. yes our civic dish is fake chinese, but it's good.
I'm living in China. The real Chinese food is amazing.
I think it's fair to consider fake chinese food it's own thing. for real chinese in calgary I'd recommend Szechuan Restaurant on 16th ave, but you probably get better at home. Ginger beef is an exclusive to western canada.
another beef centric meal you should try is streak at Caesar's, it's a steakhouse from the 60's that is trapped in a time bubble.
Szechaun cuisine is famous for their spicy food
For anything non-spicy Canton cuisine is a leader. I love Marco's Kitchen also on 16 Ave NW
Love Canton cuisine. I lived in Guangzhou (formerly known as Canton) when I first moved to China. Now only a short ways away in Shenzhen
Don't go to Banff. Go to Waterton instead.
Get a steak either from a steakhouse or a butcher and bbq yourself. Visit inglewood, grab a pizza, and then head to Cold Garden. Another night, head to 17th Avenue for dinner (Lonely Mouth) and drink at The Ship and Anchor.
At the stampede: Heavy Horses, Sheep Dog Trials, and the super dogs are some of my favorites. The rodeo is worth it, and I would also try to get to the grandstand show. The best event is the bareback racing, and man, those bulls are big.
Make sure you make it to at least one stampede breakfast. It's often a long line up for some pancakes, but also take a look at the different types. X929 often has a fun one.
But just enjoy your time. Have some drinks and scooter around the city. It's an underrated place to visit!
Thanks, I'll do as much of that s possible. I've heard about the pancake breakfast.
Um, you guys are welcome. Glad we could help you guys out. 👍
Both cities have great Zoos
And awful sports teams*
*edit: historically awful men's professional sports teams
Hey, that's no true! We have the San D-.... well actually we have the.... nevermind, they suck.
San Diego Wave was #1 in the league last season.
Thanks I updated my comment for accuracy
Nice to see the “stay classy” isn’t sarcastic this time
I read it in a sarcastic tone the first time before reading the rest of the post.
Calgary resident here. Thank you San Diego!
We're doing our part of keep water usage low so we don't run out but it's tough. Thank you for helping get these restrictions lifted!
Thank you San Diego! Calgarian here, fell absolutely in love with your city years ago when I had to travel there several times a year for work. Me, a wide-eyed 22 year-old Canadian prairie kid who had never seen the ocean, tasted cilantro, or had a fish burrito before 😆 Almost had to transfer there and was so disappointed when it fell through.
Calgary has been in pretty dire straits since our feeder main broke, and it got me in the feels when I saw that message your waterworks peeps wrote on that segment of pipe. Thank you! Y’all really are America’s Finest City.
Yay! Sending good vibes to your city!
Hope you guys get your water back soon.
thank you SD!!!! -calgary <3
Thank you San Diego!
Sending a heartfelt thank you to the City of San Diego for helping us out in our time of need.
I’m OOTL. Are you having a major water issue?
Yes! The main feeder line, which carries 60% of the potable water for the City of Calgary, had a massive leak. After examining the pipe, 5 more places were found to be about to fail. The projected time to fix everything is 3-5 weeks. The whole city of 1,665,000 people is on water restrictions. We are at risk of not having enough water for everyone.
So, you see, we are super grateful for the pipe your city is sending us.
ohmygosh, I didn't hear about this! glad our city could help!!
The pipe that broke was about 2 meters wide where it broke. We have been very worried about fire her. There is a fire ban and certain jobs that may start fires like roofing has restrictions. The neighborhood that had the break happen had a fire just this morning. Saw it on my commute this morning. The city is also connected to other bedroom communities as well so they have restrictions too.
Hope this helps in speeding up process!
That's crazy... I imagine after it's fixed everyone will be like "ummmm, can we double check this pipe on regular intervals? it's kind of important for 1.7 million of us"
After this main break they sent a robot/etc to inspect the pipes and found 5 more hot spots and this feedermain is 11km long.....
A massive main broke last week. Taking a while to fix.
Thanks Cali buddies. We appreciate you 👊
Hey I work there! No idea this was happening but I'll be sharing this post and the good vibes with my co-workers tomorrow ❤️
Tell them I love whoever spray painted it. They remind me of my dad, whom I adore for his love of life and fun. What a great message.
As a Calgarian, please do, you guys rock!!! 💞💞
❤️ go cats
Amen
Thanks San Diego. I’ve been showering in my bidet for the last two weeks. I don’t have a favorite NFL team, being from Canada, so I’m going to adopt yours to cheer for.
Uf! Don't bring up our (former) NFL team. It still hurts. 😜
Padres it is then
My man!
You are picking up the culture quickly
Ooooh sorry
Eh, we’re over it. They’re just a few miles north.
I used to live in Calgary and would occasionally travel to San Diego to get away from winter weather. I always felt like people in San Diego we're absolutely top class. Glad to see that validated in the data.
Very true. San Diego is like no other city in the states.
Calgarian here! Thank you, San Diego! We’ll remember your generosity in the upcoming water wars.
As a Calgarian who spent the week in San Diego and just got home. Awesome to see a city I fell in love with help out in our time of need. Your zoo is awesome and belching beaver is a gift from god. Stay classy southern bros.
Hey down there! Thanks for the love. We really need it. 🙏. Hope you all have a great drama free summer.👊
I imagine there aren't many of these giant pipes just laying around, glad the water authority could help another city.
Thank you, our friends in San Diego!
We appreciate your generosity, and I think it's so cool your city is named after part of a whale!
Thank you, San Diego 🙏
Awesome, going to Calgary next week to visit some friends.
I was in Calgary for business when I get getting emergency alerts to conserve water due to a main line busting.
I assume this is to replace. Crazy
It is. The single most important feeder main in the city had a catastrophic failure. While repairing the rupture, they found five more areas that need immediate replacement. The city was frantically trying to source enough replacement pipe for five separate emergency repairs. SDCWA came through.
Time to adopt each other as Sister Cities!
Thank You San Diago!
As someone who has lived in both cities (amongst others), both of y’all were my favorites. Rock solid, good, friendly people.
Was there an emergency y?
Yeah. One of the major water lines that carries about 60% of the water for 1.6M people broke. We're okay for drinking water, but having to conserve pretty hard to keep that going.
We had three sections of pipe on hand to fix it. Turns out we needed 4. You guys came through clutch on that last one, which means repairs are full steam ahead. We're all very thankful for it, and the message of support spraypainted on it is lovely!
EDIT: Turns out we had 4 and needed 6. I shortchanged you one of the 2 you sent when thanking you. So...uh...double thanks? I owe you a coke.
Thank you, San Diego!
I have never been to Calgary and now I want to go. At some later time where I won’t be wasting your water as a tourist. I hope former Red Wings fans are allowed in town?
Some of us even live here ;)
Remember the good old days?
I was just reminiscing about them tonight, actually. They were some glorious days.
I’ve made peace with the fact that probably none of my teams will ever win a championship again in my lifetime 🤷🏻♀️
So it’ll be an extra fun surprise when they do!
The last Toronto cup win was in 1967....
Calgarian here, as others have said, thank you very, very much! We appreciate you all very much !!! 💞💞
Another Calgarian here.. this is very much appreciated. It's been a weird week and it sounds like it'll stay weird for a while yet, but this will help.
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Take our energy and also our large tube! ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Thank you for helping, San Diego. 👽☕
Thanks for looking out, San Diego! If you ever get tired of that perfect weather, come on up.
Nice to see SD appreciated! Happy to see we could be of help ❤️
It’s the least we can do. 🤙😁
We had absolutely no say in making this happen, nor did we know anything about it. But sure, Calgary, you’re so welcome!
Thank you, San Diego! With Stampede right around the corner (our biggest tourist draw of the year), this help could not have come at a better time.
It's a heck of an IOU, but one I hope one we can fulfill when you need it the most.
Connor McWho?
TJ next?
We’re going to have to build a water treatment facility down there to fix the sewage problem from the river.
I'm high and this makes no sense. Will revisit later.
Love to Calgary and San Diego, I see you're both mentioned in this.
This made me so happy to see. I’m born and raised in San Diego and I hope you guys are doing ok. Much Love.
Can someone tell me why Calgary couldn't find a pipe..... In Alberta
from what ive heard, we need 5, and most were sourced from within the province. i'm guessing no one thought deferred maintenance would bite us in the butt so bad that we'd need so many at once
It's not unusual for uncommon parts like this to be sourced from other provinces/states/countries. These parts are so rarely required on short notice (our failure was catostrophic and required 5 pieces and 4 were sourced from within Alberta) that it doesn't make sense to stockpile various sizes just to sit in yards for years until they are needed.
This way, Calgary will order a brand new replacement part for San Diego. San Diego gets to move an older part out of their yard and get it replaced with a brand new shiny one. It's a win for everyone
It's just ironic with the amount of plants and oil and gas companies in this province.
It happens all the time with oil and gas and pipeline companies. Not everyone carries all parts on stock all the time. Companies are supplying parts to their peers if needed for uncommon items.
Calgary dude here, thanks for helping us out! 😇
Thank you so much #SDCWA! We're getting a lot of rain but we are forever thankful for this.
Calgarian here. Thanks San Diego!
* Go San Diego Go!!!
Thank you so much for sending the big pipe to save the day! We can repay you with snow and dandelions if you want 😬
Another Calgarian, much appreciated! We’re thirsty!
Appreciate you, San Diego! Go San Diego Wave and Kailen Sheridan!
Wife and I fell in love with Mission beach and La Jolla in December and look forward to exploring what else your beautiful city has to offer in the future. Thanks San Diego!
<3 thank you sandiego
Thank you, San Diego, from a Calgarian
Thank-you San Diego!
We'll put these pipes to good use. :)
This is so wholesome. Love my city
As a mom to two tween boys who desperately need to go back to real showers soon, thank you San Diego!!
Big thanks, San Diego! We should probably be friends now.
Wow! I love this. I consider myself from both cities and love seeing this in my feed.
Thanks San Diego! We are so grateful for your generosity.
Sending you guys all the best!! Love you guys! Sincerely - Calgary
Thanks San Diego! Appreciate you coming through when we needed someone! Go Padres!!
Thank you, San Diego!!!
Much love from Cowtown.
Thank you San Diego ❤️🤘🏼 stay classy
Thanks San Diego!
Thank you ❤️❤️
Thanks San Diego! You got a beautiful city!!!!
First of all, LOL.
San Diego and Calgary will always have a bond together. Both cities are absolutely terrible at winning in sports.
