Do you guys usually rent, or bring your own bikes on the trips? Is it difficult to transport your bike over seas?
Route DiscussionHow are you getting your dog into different countries? Thought that was hard without quarantining for some time
Interesting. You and your pup Have a safe trip
Yo good luck! What's your pup setup like?
Pls share! Would love to see. I just got a trailer like that for my pup, he’s just a baby and getting used to it, but stoked for some long days with him 🤘🤘
Do you have a blog or social media we can follow? Sounds epic
Airlines usually charge a checked bag fee for a bike packed in a box. So far, several flights and trips and no problems with finding a place to reassemble upon arrival.
That’s becoming less so. Sporting equipment is starting to get a pass as long as it’s under the weight limits.
I’m currently flying with a free checked bike on American domestically, but it applies to their international flights as well.
Agree, most airlines will accept sport luggages without any issues if this is under weight and cubic size limit (heigjt+width+depth <=300cm) some may not accept your bike without a box or bag. Some accept carton box some not as they fear humidity may affects its strength. Check on the airline website and don't forget to deflate(tubeless is a pain as milk may run out) and remove any battery as they will refuse to carry your bike for safety reasons. This is based on multiple overseas and overland flights. Hope this help
No need to deflate all the way. In reality there is no need to deflate at all as the luggage compartment is pressured the same as the cabin to approximately 10,000 ft asl. Do you deflate your tyres every time you go over a high mountain pass? Didn't think so. Even if your bike tyre did blow out ( it's not going to) it's going to cause zero damage. An inflated truck or tractor tyre on the other hand...
Fully agree with you, but I don't make the rules and some security officers (when thry xray your bike) may check. Happens to me many time, same as clinically clean your bike for Australia or NZ trips as they will otherwise not let you in in fear of seed contamination.
You know there is no need to deflate.
I know.
The baggage handler doesn't give a shit what we know - the one good thing about cardboard boxes, they'll ask whether you deflated your tires, and you nod earnestly and tell them "of course I did"...
My bike fits so much better in a box fully deflated.
I’ve done both. I hope I never have to rent again.
Just stay on your continent, you clearly like active travel and enjoy nature so why get on a plane? Planes are bad m'kay.
BYO. Typically cheaper. Rental rates and having to deal with the hassle isn’t worth it, plus most places do a half ass job of proper maintenance.
Where do you guys store the box/container if it is an expensive hardshell? And do you normally ask a transport from the airport to a specific destination to get started?
Renting for a joy ride or two is fine. But bikepacking bags are so fit-specific that renting is simply not possible.
Usually bring it with me, transporting a bike by plane is no problem at all(*)
(*) Unless you're traveling to the States and your port of entry isn't also your destination - plan a couple of days for your luggage/bike to arrive...
Bring my own. Very little hassle and always a lot cheaper than renting.
