I’m freaking out. I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado that my boyfriend put gasoline in today. It was on a quarter tank and he thought he’d be nice and fill it up for me. He gets home (drove 5 miles) turns it off. I go out to start it, it won’t turn over. I’ve never had problems with this truck, it’s never even given a hint of not starting. I grill him. He admits that he can’t remember if he grabbed the green handle at the gas station. I smell the tank, it smells like gas.

Everything on the internet is either saying it will be fine if it’s flushed and a new fuel pump and a few other parts OR the engine is destroyed and I’ll be out $25,000.

The diesel mechanic opens at 8am tomorrow, it will obviously be towed there.

Should I expect the worst with 5 miles driven?

UPDATE: diesel mechanic flushed the lines and changed the fuel filter. Added an additive to help clear the fuel line. Told me to drive it and see if I have any issues. From what a lot of people said here and on another thread, I am worried that the engine may be a ticking time bomb. Mechanic who’s owned his shop for 30 years is telling me that a dealership wouldn’t have thought twice about replacing the whole fuel system, but he gets trucks like this every day and very few of them have long term issues. So, I’ll drive it and listen/feel for anything out of the ordinary and go from there. It was $900 total and boyfriend paid for everything. I had no doubts he’d do the right thing and pay for it, but I was upset and pretty distraught at the thought of damage to the tune of $12-20k. I still love AND respect the guy… we all do dumb stuff. But I’ll be the one filling my truck up from now on. I’ll update this post further if anything goes wrong or it goes back in the shop.
