Found the best day bar in townDining/Food/Drink 🍽️🍹

Quite some time ago, I made a Reddit post asking for bar and coffee shop recs for places where people are social and not afraid to meet new people. Today I went to a bar recommended in one of the comments on that post. It's called A.T. O'Keeffe's and it's so much fun! I had conversations with like 6 different people, and walked away with a new friend. As soon as I walked in people were super welcoming and I didn't have to sit by myself at all before meeting someone new. The music wasn't too loud, other people were just coming in solo and it wasn't awkward. Everyone was including other random people in their conversations. There were outlets everywhere at the bar, and they even had a non-alcoholic beer, which is perfect for someone like me who still enjoys the bar scene, but can't drink because of health reasons. I will of course be going back. One of the best experiences I've had at a city bar in the middle of the day. 🥰

Boston has third worst commute in the countryWork/Life/Residential

https://www.geotab.com/time-to-commute/

Nyc, dc, and Boston are all 40 mins or above in commute time

Seattle, San Diego, LA and Philly are markedly shorter on a percentage basis

Esp San Diego

Wouldn’t have guessed San Diego was almost half the commute time

Tip included at bars?Dining/Food/Drink 🍽️🍹

I’m a regular at a bar in Fenway, and in the past couple of weeks I’ve noticed that the bartenders automatically charge a 20% tip for every drink I order. I understand this kind of thing for large parties at a restaurants, but in this case its just me ordering a beer. Is this normal? I generally tip 20% for drinks anyway but it feels weird that its not my choice anymore. Let me know if you guys have experienced this too in Boston.

Is anyone having issues with Uber?Scammers 🥸

I live in Boston and, in February this year, an Uber driver drove off while I was trying to open the car's door. He charged a cancellation fee after. Two weeks ago, same thing, the driver almost ran over my foot. He drove off because it was hard for him to open the door. I couldn't do it, he tried from inside, and since he also couldn't, he drove off and almost ran over me. When I looked at the app, the info about this 2nd driver had immediately disappeared, but was charged for the whole trip.

Last week, two drivers miraculously arrived less than 1 minute after the app found them. And both of them canceled the trip within 40 seconds. I was charged for the whole trip by one of them. The other one charged me a cancelation fee. But, again, the info about the guy who charged me the whole trip, disappeared from the app. The charge, however, could be seen on my bank account.

On top of all of this, I was also charged $4.90. I have no idea what this charge is for. I called their safety concern line - because they don't have a costumer service number. I was instructed to ask for help through message. But they use a bot to answer. The bot send me the "cancelation fee police" twice after I texted about the issues.

To make it clear, I live in North Cambridge.

I'm intrigued about all of this. I'm suddenly having so much bad luck. Does anyone is also experiencing this? Are all uber drivers in Boston jerks? Or it is just bad lucK?

Where to get a suit to get married in?OP Wears Jorts 👖 + 🩳

Getting married in 364 days and apparently it's "gauche" to wear a 20 year old band t-shirt, jeans and Vans. What are some decent places around the city to find a nice, fun suit that'll have me looking sharp as fuck on the big day? Gracias, mi amores.

Finding Austrian Beer in the Greater Boston AreaDining/Food/Drink 🍽️🍹

Does anyone know of a store other than Total Wine in the Greater Boston area where you can find Austrian beer that isn't just Stiegl? Stiegl is great, just wondering if I'd be able to find beer from other Austrian breweries as well. Thanks!

Commercial laundry service for airlinesServices/Contractors 🧰 🔨

This is a total shot in the dark - but I accidentally left my daughter’s prized teddy bear on an Air France flight into Boston this afternoon. I’ve emailed with Air France there and they said that nothing was turned in from the flight but I’m pretty sure it was wrapped up in one of the blankets they provide. I know those get sent out to be laundered and I’m wondering is anyone has any idea who the large commercial launderers in Boston are so I could start calling around. She’s absolutely gutted and heartbroken and it’s 100% my fault. Any (helpful) advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is the Boston Night Market worth going to?Event 📅

Was considering going but have never been. Is it worth putting aside alternative plans or is it mostly just an expensive way to join a crowd for a couple of hours?

Health Insurance Broker?Services/Contractors 🧰 🔨

I am now in the position of needing to buy my own health insurance. I can afford private insurance and want to look at that in addition to looking at MassHealth.

Any health insurance brokers to recommend? I can do all the research myself, but would love to find someone else who has already done it.

Whatever happened to the Hub on Wheels Bike Event?Bicycles 🚲

Funny how Boston is now more bike-friendly but yet this event no longer happens.

For recent transplants, it was an event that happened in the fall on a Sunday. You would start at Government Center/City Hall Plaza. And there was a 10 mile, 30 mile and 50 mile ride loop.

  • On the first part, they would close down Storrow Drive for only bikes.
  • The rest of the ride was amazing and went through places like Arnold Arboretum, Stony Brook reservation, and would return to Boston right on the harbowalk. There would be a party at the end back at Government Center/City Hall Plaza.
  • There were multiple Rest Stops where vendors had free food and water.
  • Mayor Menino would give a speech at the start and claim that "it wasn't a bike race", although to some people it certainly was lol.

How can we bring this event back? I feel like attendance would be even bigger than before, since over the past 5 years the amount of people biking in this city has grown substantially.

And to the anti-bikers that I know will comment: It was 1 day out of the year for like 3 hours that Storrow Drive was closed to cars. HoW CoUld yOu PoSsibly HaNdle tHat?

Straight back cornrows/Natural hair braiders?Services/Contractors 🧰 🔨

My friend graduated undergrad today, which marks the end of her doing my hair — going on for 3 years.

Any recommendations y’all know? Preferably cost-efficient because it’s my natural hair (not using additional hair), plus I’ll wash my hair before coming in. My hair type is 3C and I’ve never cut my hair, making it ideal for braiding since all hairs are roughly same length.

I have never gone to a salon/shop for myself before, any tips on how to be respectful… or just be kind?

Boston Globe article on MBTA Communities MBTA/Transit 🚇 🔥

This article sums it up better than I ever could, but (as any housing advocate has known), the MBTA communities law really isn’t going to impact housing in the way it’s intended because of where towns are placing their districts. Sudbury, Wayland and Chelmsford put their districts entirely over existing apartments. North Andover put theirs in areas that almost certainly won’t be developed on. And it doesn’t help that the state reduced requirements for units in many towns last year (over 60,000 zoned units across the state were removed, and in Norwood’s case, 700 more units would’ve been required). The 15 units per acre threshold is already being met in enough town centers or apartment complexes that it really isn’t gonna mean anything, but of course the NIMBY crowd thinks otherwise and will block some towns from even ZONING for housing — when if there really wasn’t a demand for multi family residential, there wouldn’t be a need to ban it.

Everett RoadsLocal News 📰

Does anyone know why are roads in such bad condition in Everett? I recently moved to the city, and it is really surprising to see the condition of roads. They're definitely hurting car suspensions.
