I'm currently studying and using wordpress I enjoyed creating a website using. I want to have a job related to it what are the essential things I need to learn in Wordpress in order for me to land a job.
Yep. The whole damn thing.
You could start by making your own website with WordPress - become your own first client and figure out how to get a site up and running. Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of WordPress! ✨
Exactly what I'm doing! It's been a fun to experiment with WP, PHP and CSS. The joy of figuring out the tiny CSS you need to pull a visual miracle (at least to an amateur like me) is unbelievable xD
Perfect! I think that's a good starting place. Are you building with WordPress blocks?
I am, Gutenberg FTW haha I'm mostly using GeneratePress and GenerateBlocks. I like Kadence Blocks too. What are you building with?
All sorts of things! I've been a WordPress dev since around 2015/2016. I've embraced blocks these days, though, because building "close to Core" is my preferred mode.
So you what people refer to as "Pro" in these circles haha I can't imagine how challenging it must have been to build with the classic builder. I'm glad I showed up late to the party! I don't know why, but I read "close to core" with a New York accent lol Mind taking a quick look at my website. I just redesigned, and it's nothing spectacular, but I did it myself
Would be happy to!
Awesome! I'll dm you!
Get as familiar as you can with how to use Updraft backups and restore. Make sure you realise how important it is to have backups. You can have the nicest website in world, but not having a backup means it's always vulnerable.
Download Local by flywheel. Start your own local website and then start developing it. Just spend as much time as you can on WordPress. Get familiar with everything. Contact forms, plugins, menus, etc. Play around with WooCommerce. Consider trying a theme builder like Blocksy and theme/content builder like Elementor. Learn about image optimisation / site speed etc. Learn some basic SEO tactics.
One thing leads to another, basically just keep learning and get proficient at a broad range of things. Watch YouTube tutorials and ask lots of questions on reddit. Once you've started watching a lot of YouTube vids, your recommendations will show you more potential things to learn.
But at first just keep going back to basics over and over.
That’s way too vague. Say more about your strengths and skills.
Maybe you can come up with problems you can solve with WordPress, and make proof of concept sites?
php?
This. Learn PHP for Wordpress.
Linkedin has great tutorials.
Check your library - they may be free there/
Read the WP developers documentation from start to finish. Set up a free sandbox site with a top-tier hosting/site management platform like pantheon.io and go through their documentation for Wordpress as well. Build a WP site from scratch as you learn from the docs. This is how I learned and even though it feels like I retained nothing at all, when I had to build a website it came back like muscle memory .
- PHP, at least enough to code simple snippets for custom functions
- CSS, which seems easy but it really isn't, it's powerful enough to unleash visual wizardry
- Popular themes, plugins, and page builders. Know your way around them and experiment with as many as you can
I'd also learn the basics about domains (DNS, name servers, etc.), hosting (vps, cpanel, etc.) and defintely security (.htaccess, WP hardening, etc.).
We sometimes do some basic training for our clients, and usually use the WPBeginner, WordPress. org and some other free tutorial materials , depending on what the clients plan to do on the site. I hope this could help you as well, check it out...
Learn WordPress Plugin and or Theme development. Also create a portfolio with your created projects.
What to do when Wordpress gives you "there has been a critical error"
Did a website enjoy creating? WordPress you were using.
1) Learn php and Wordpress hooks.
2) learn php and Wordpress hooks.
3) Creating a plugin file is actually really easy. Go and build a simple plugin and practise what you’ve learned. In fact I’d recommend make by a post type plugin.
4) you don’t need to make plugins all the time, for security, seo and performance, try out some decent plugins. I use WPMU’s plugins
5) if you want to charge premium rates to clients you can make your own themes. If you want to charge lower rates page builders like Breakdance or Bricks are you friend.
6) as mentioned earlier, post types are very useful. Try out ACF or if you’re like me, try out an alternative like ACPT. You can build post types like “books” or “movies” and display them on the frontend. On my own website I have “services, portfolio and testimonials” post types.
My sincerest advice: Wordpress is a rabbit hole, you learn it and gets deeper and deeper and possibly devoid you the chance to learn any other technologies. Its a huge “framework” and loads concepts you need to u understand. Also depends on the future tech stack you like. If its php based - ie laravel, etc then perhaps worth while to learn WP.
My advice just go to learn some basic wordpres theme development, it will teach basic front end and back end aspects of WP. Enough to make money with it with freelancing jobs etc.
Then delve into WP only as much as u need to, if you want to go to Nodejs etc (a JS based tech stack).
You will probably need to learn more than 10 different ways to build a page. Going to take a whole year if you are dealing with coding and security.
For the easiest path, using web framework is simple and less learning curve.
All of it
