Weekly Ask Seattle Megathread: May 20, 2024Weekly Thread

Update: we're hiring!

We're looking to build a team of wiki editors and maintainers (non-moderators) to help us update and organize our wiki, sidebars, etc. We're also looking for more subreddit moderators to join our team as the subreddit continues to grow.

More info can be found here.

Don't forget to check out our Discord - we have dedicated channels for moving/visiting questions and recommendations and lots of locals to help answer them.

/r/AskSeattle is another great resource dedicated to questions like these.

This thread is created automatically and stickied weekly for /r/seattle users to chat, ask for recommendations, and discuss current news and events.

The following topics are welcomed in this thread:

  • Moving and visiting questions
  • "Best Of" recommendations
  • General off-topic discussion, chatting, ranting (within reason)
  • Events happening this week (or in the future)

If you have questions about moving to (or visiting) Seattle:

  • First - please search the subreddit, wiki, sidebar, and your search engine of choice!

r/Seattle Golden Gardens Meetup - 6/8/24 @ 3pmAnnouncement

It's been a while since we did one of these...

Our next official meetup is happening June 8th at 3:00 p.m. - at Golden Gardens park!

If you've been to one of our bigger meetups in the past (previously labeled Global Reddit Meetup Day, when Reddit was still a fun company) - welcome back! Not much has changed about how these work, but I'll repeat the info below for the new folks.

For those of you new to our meetups, it's a way we engage with the community by hosting an outdoor picnic / potluck / hangout every year (sometimes multiple times a year - check our discord for more events). Here are the important details:

  • Who: Everyone is welcome! This event is free, and anyone can join. It's run jointly by our subreddit mods and our discord, and is a great way to meet people and maybe make some new friends
  • What: think of it as an outdoor hangout. Company picnic vibes but way more relaxed and more dogs (usually). Bring your friends, roommates, four-legged friends, food/drinks, blankets, outdoor activities, etc.
  • When: June 8th at 3 p.m. until park close. Rain or shine, we'll be there! If weather sucks, depending on turnout we may move to a nearby bar or indoor venue, or we'll just play in the rain. It is Seattle, after all.
  • Where: We'll be meeting at Golden Gardens (shelter 1) . Post in the day-of event thread or on our discord if you need help finding folks. We should have a big `r/seattle` banner, but either way we'll make sure people can find us.

Those are most of the important things, so if you read no further please just get these details and we hope to see you there! For communication about the event:

  • We will make a new thread on the day of the event and link it here.
  • If you're on discord and want notifications, we have an event setup on our server to ping members who RSVP. If you haven't been to our server yet, please stop by and say hello!
  • Please use this thread and our discord to coordinate with other users if you're planning on bringing things, so we don't end up with everyone bringing the same Costco food item.

Some other (still important) notes:

  • At Golden Gardens parking is TIGHT. Please use transit, rideshare, or carpool if you can, parking spots here fill up quick and the lots are always chaos. There is more parking up the hill towards Ballard and down the street on Seaview. You're welcome to coordinate rides with other users but please do so at your own risk.
  • You are responsible for who and what you bring. Technically it is illegal to consume alcoholic beverages and other substances at Seattle parks. Just remember, you are ultimately responsible for yourself, we only ask that you make good decisions.
  • Similar to the above, Seattle parks do not permit amplified audio devices. Small bluetooth speakers are likely ok if you want to play some music, but do so at your own risk. Again, please make good decisions.
  • Things we'll provide:
    • Nametags
    • A few grills to cook (these are public outdoor grills, so keep that in mind)
    • Light snacks, water, sodas, etc.
  • Things people usually bring:
    • A blanket, tarp, or chair (and something to weigh it down if it's windy)
    • A small cooler or bag of food and drinks for yourself and any to share with others if you wish
    • Your LEASHED dog if they're friendly and enjoy other people (and other dogs). There's going to be a lot of random internet friends and likely doggos around, so if your four-legged friend is reactive or shy it might be best to leave them at home.
    • Outdoor activities fit for the beach - frisbee, soccer/football, kites, etc.

Please let me know in this thread (or on discord) if you have any questions or if there's anything I left out. Hope to see you there!

Pro tip: Consider the Seattle Yellow Cab app over Uber/Lyft

I live in a part of Weet Seattle where there aren’t any viable public transport options to get to the airport and had been relying on Uber/Lyft when trying to get to the airport. However, the prices have gone up significantly and seem to be getting worse each time. When I needed a scheduled ride last week, Uber quote was $78 and Lyft was $86. It’s gotten so ridiculous that the round trip cost of an Uber/Lyft ride was more than that of my airline ticket for this trip!

Anyways, I remember a while back someone mentioned taking the yellow cab from the airport back home and discovered they had an app. I downloaded the app and scheduled a pick up. The app estimated a cost of $48-$49. I was wary whether the driver would show up on time and as a precaution set it for 30 minutes earlier in case they didn’t show and I needed to fall back on uber/Lyft. Well, the driver showed up on time, was very pleasant, and didn’t drive like a maniac. And the meter ended up at $48.30 or something so it was exactly in the estimated range. Honestly, the whole experience was way better than any uber or lyft i’ve take in the past couple years. I had already switched to taking the cabs at the airport back home as they were both quicker to get one and cheaper but I am definitely taking cabs from home to the airport both for the better service and the much cheaper cost.

greenwood missed connection

this happened today, 5/19, on greenwood ave between 87th & 85th right around verity credit union

to the tall person (I assume you're a man, but maybe you identify as something else) with the longish, dark curly hair who literally caught me as I tripped over my own feet after turning the corner and seeing you: THANK YOU 😅

you asked me if I was okay and I meant to say "yes, thank you. (+ a smooth line about how you swept me off my feet)," but I was so frazzled that I'm not 100% sure on what words actually came out of my mouth. I was so embarrassed that I essentially ran away.

If it weren't for you I'd have def faceplanted into the sidewalk...but then again, if it weren't for you maybe I wouldn't have tripped over my own feet to begin with...

me: black, my hair was pulled back in a bun with a bright green headband, grey glasses and an oversized grey/black flannel

again: thanks 🤓

Is it just me or does T-Mobile suck in Seattle?

If I'm out and about in the city my data easily cuts out every 5 minutes or so. Today I got off the light rail in U Village and was trying to call and Uber and gave up after a few minutes because I wasn't able to connect. Super annoying. I have a newer phone (Pixel 7 Pro).

Anyone remember a kid’s dentist back in the 90s or early 2000s who had a real life chimpanzee in his office?Question

As I look for a new dentist after finally getting dental insurance for the first time in my life I recall a dentist who made me afraid to go to the dentist since I was a kid. I don’t remember his name but he had an office somewhere in Seattle by the Pacific Place mall. But what I do remember is that the guy had a chimpanzee in his office that he would have in the room with you as he worked on you.

I remember as a kid that he was extremely rough and had no issue with me being in pain. He would press down on your gums as hard as he could and ask if it hurt. When you said yes, he would say you need to have that tooth removed immediately. Panicked you would ask him to try again and have him press harder and ask the same question. “No it doesn’t hurt” you would reply. When he found I had cavities and didn’t filling the chimp was in the room with us and i remember the procedure being very painful. When I screamed the chimp would jump up and down and scream as well. He would tell me it doesn’t hurt and kept going. When I complained about it to my parents the dentist said I was exaggerating and couldn’t have felt anything. Guy was a nightmare! Don’t remember why my parents stopped taking me to him.

Since then I have a profound fear of going to the dentist. I struggle to get over it, but I know I have a cavity which hurts so I gotta figuratively bite down and go find a good dentist. (Anyone have a good suggestion for one in Mercer Island?)

But for the real question. Does anyone else remember this A**hole? I have told friends about him and they laughed saying that there is no way a dentist can have a wild animal in his office while he is working on you. I know it sounds ludicrous, but I clearly remember this. Anyone else here go to this guy? Anyone remember his name? I mostly want to put a face to this devil and possibly send him a message telling him how much of a monster he is.

What's your favorite bakery in Seattle?

I'd probably vote Bakery Nouveau or Sea Wolf

Agua Verde Cafe Fans - what happened to the food and aguas frescas?

Visited after many years excited to see it was still there, but was disappointed in the food and lack of aguas frescas. Did it change hands or something?

Serious Question

Are there any restaurants or locations in Seattle that have a Japanese toilet that a member of the public could use? You know, the ones that cost $2000 and have the heated seats and bidet combo and are probably TOTO branded?

Okay maybe this isn’t that serious of a question but I am serious about it 😂

I want to get properly into tea - where do I go tea shopping?

I'm looking to properly climb into a rabbit hole on tea. I'm already a big pourover guy but not every moment is a coffee moment. I'm talking jasmine tea, I'm talking weird herbals, I'm talking whatever obscure knowledge is going to help me make a bangin cup of tea and will get my pushing up my glasses like a know-it-all scumbag every time I see tea served by people who aren't knowledgeable about it. I'm talking about being the guy in the ProZD clip that r/coffee jokes about before they go looking for coffee grown an exact altitute in a specific mountain range that naturally tastes like blueberries with a hint of goat liver if you pulverize the coffee cherries, strain out the fleshy parts, and leave the beans to ferment in the goop for 15 days, 7 hours and 32 minutes before they take one sip and pour it out if they taste that the coffee grounds were 3 microns too small on average.

Help bury me in the tea rabbit hole and leave me there.

I'm located near Belltown, I'd ideally want to find a place I can get to by bus.

Big Ass Spring Plant Sale At Magnusson Park?Question

First of all, ((Big Ass) Spring Plant Sale), not (Big (Ass Spring) Plant Sale).

I stumbled into it just before the pandemic, and I had a really good time! They had all kinds of venders come from nurseries all around to sell plants and planty things, and get their shops discovered. The parking lot was full of people, trying to get in, they needed to have traffic control... it was BUMPING.

Does anyone know what this event is/was called? Is it still happening? Did it happen this year (and did I miss it)? Who organizes it, and is there an official website or an insta account?

Thanks, yalls.

fiction books set in WA

What are some fiction books, any genre, set in Washington? Seattle metro area is my preference but the entire state is fair game.

I'd love to hear about some by indigenous authors.

I live across the water in Kitsap so "the Bones At Point No Point" and all of DD Black's books are well known to me. I've also already hit up "Lawn Boy" and Jonathan Evison's other books.

Bonus points for anything dystopian that is not just a newspaper. 🫠

Best Peking Duck in or near Seattle?Question

I love peking duck. The kind with the pancakes. I'm turning 40 this summer and want to plan a peking duck dinner—should I be doing Baron's? There's a place in Kent too? What's the best? Do you have strong perspective on this? Thank you!

Strippers of Seattle, what should we know about the new laws before we come into your club?

I’m planning to take my uncle to a strip club next week. He is in a wheelchair now and he doesn’t get out a lot. We meet up once a week to vibe.

I’m gay but I’m a sailor (United States Merchant Marine) so I’ve been to a lot of strip clubs with my shipmates.

My uncle used to work on the Boeing 747 assembly line in Everett and stopping at the stripclub with your foreman and your crew was basically required back then.

We know to tip, we know to not touch unless invited to touch, we don’t need an education on strip club 101.

We need an education on strip club 202: advanced modern strip club knowledge.

Is there still a “rail” you can sit at and politely tip if you don’t want a personal dance? Can we order alcohol now?

Strippers of Seattle please give us the 2024 info and code of conduct. Your work is valued. See you soon.

EDIT: to the two actual strippers who replied to this thank you. To 37 people who told me to go to Portland, duly noted but I can’t take my medically-sensitive uncle, load him and his wheelchair up and drive 6 hours roundtrip to go see some ‘better’ tits.

This is gonna be an adventure out of the house for 2 hours tops to have a little excitement in between next pill doses and nursing assistants asking too many damn questions. As far as anyone knows we went to the museum of flight.
