Hello Seattle Buds,

I'm trying to hire someone to help my 80 year old mom in Shoreline. Basically, the jobs would be:

Light housekeeping assistance for her 650 sq ft apartment
Drive her around. Specifically right now we need someone to help her around to shop for a new apartment. She has mobility difficulties, but can mostly get in and out of cars by herself with occasional help. Other driving around might be doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions
Make phone calls and schedule stuff. She doesn't like calling people, so it would take a lot of stress off her if someone else calls and sets up appointments and things.
Organizing: Help her work out grocery lists and meal plans, maybe help her prep some meals for the week
15-30 hours a week?

All this is being handled by my sister and myself right now, but it is enough that we figured out it could be a decent part time job for somebody.

Does anyone have any experience hiring people around Seattle/Shoreline area for this type of thing? Is there a particular agency that is good, or can anyone recommend a good independent operator?

Is there a place I can go within the city limits to ask questions about summiting Rainier and get answers from folks that definitely know what they're talking about? The internet is great, but I want to hear it from people who've done it and can help me with gear questions, timelines, how/where/when to book the guided summits, all the detailed stuff.

Seattle minimum wage is $19.97 per hour. At 40 hours per week that works out to $38k per year.

That is off the chart from the "statistics" values sent, which states a range from $27k to $37k, median of $31k.

It's an hourly position. Federal law says minimum of ~ $200 cash per week. I've met families that share, where the employee was technically working half time for each one. There is no requirement that the aupair be working 40 hours weeks, nor that they stay a full 12 months.

Seattle law on deductions, eg room & board "Deductions may be taken from wages when “the worker expressly authorizes the deduction in writing and in advance for a lawful purpose for ‘the benefit of the worker.’ These deductions may reduce the worker’s gross wages below the Seattle minimum wage.”

I know it’s hard to quantify but how reliable would a train -> RapidRide commute from Ravenna to West Seattle be? By that I mean - could I reliably leave my place @7, catch a train, transfer to C or H buses downtown, and get to West Seattle @8? Or am I going to be constantly facing train disruptions or traffic?

Rapid ride buses are “bus rapid transit” meaning they generally have dedicated lanes, signal priority, as well as some other speed features. And the link of course operates in an exclusive right of way. So for the most part, you shouldn’t see too many disruptions there.

The link isn’t quite frequent enough though, so any delays might mess up that consistency.

Any recommendations for a car wash with shampoo or steamer wands? I’m willing to drive a ways. We need to clean a big mess in the car. Affordable detailing shops recommendations also welcome.

There is a self-service car wash off 85th and 8th that has shampoo machines.

I was going to suggest the same one. Works well. Plus you can go to Chuck's afterwrads to get the vaccuum sound out of your head.

Does anyone who is a cocktail or liquor enthusiast have a favorite liquor store? I'm a hobbyist cocktail person who's been buying from Total Wine, but their sketchy upselling of their "Spirit's Direct" brand, plus their incessant hovering around me when I'm trying to shop, has me looking for other places. I'm mostly prioritizing a wide selection with knowledgeable (non-hovering) staff; I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest bottle of vodka I can find. Thank you!

I have a job in seattle starting in around 3 weeks, would that be enough time to secure an apartment? My plan at the moment is to come over for 3 days and do some shopping (after researching online and scheduling some visits), then apply as soon as I have a few I like, I'm wondering if it would be practical to get an apartment secured with less than a month's notice

Does anything like this exist in Seattle area or even BC?

I once did a trip to Maui where you took a shuttle with a bike to the top of a long incline (volcano in that case) and you spend the morning coasting down and stopping for breakfast, photos on the way down. So, not a lot of exertion. At the end of the ride was the bike shop where you’d dump the bike. It was NOT guided.

Hello Seattle! I am visiting later this week and staying downtown. I have used the light rail to get from the airport to my hotel in the past but Google maps is showing some disruption in the public transit directions. Can I expect this to be the case or is everything functioning normally?

Airport to Downtown should be unaffected until June and July. Cheers!

* Unless you're riding after 11pm on Tuesday between 5/21 and 6/25, in which case trains will be arriving every 20 minutes instead of sooner.

* If you're leaving 6/1-6/2, refer to the 1 line service disruption website, you may need to transfer trains at one point.
