I don’t think that OP is saying they’re identical or that you should drink instead of smoke; but you’re not immune to having any issues if you smoke weed. Only on trains destined for 1,000 miles or longer, with very few exceptions. This doesn’t mean you have to get it for a long time, however. In theory, you could buy a private room for a train and get off 5 minutes later. This guy did just that, he’s one of the people who intrigued me about Amtrak voyagers.

I will say, I did manage to get a private room for a four hour trip because you can put in low bids for upgrades, and while I paid $100 for a one way trip that people usually pay as little as $20 for, it was arguably the most comfortable I’ve ever been traveling in my life

The escapism. I love travel and it feels more like a “proper” trip, but obvious logistical constraints prevent me from traveling far all the time. So it’s just fun for me to be on a train with people on a big trip to somewhere far away and watch the scenery go by, and walk around, but not have to commit to actually taking a long trip.

Okay update, I need to clarify, when I talk about short distance vs long distance, I’m referring to how far the trains go themselves. I personally take those trains a very short distance, no more than 40 miles ☺️.

Short distance is typically a local route of 400miles. Long Distance trains are typically 1,500-2,500.

It varies a lot. I always find that there’s cheap prices for trips day of or night before because a lot of people cancel, but then it’s pricier until you book a month or so out, and then gets cheaper.

Without getting into too much detail, there’s one route that takes 30min-1hr (depends if I go one or two stops) that hugs the water for most of it and it is gorgeous
