Welcome to r/MYOG!

Hey MYOGers! We are trying something new to spur more discussion and interaction in the monthly posts, to help users understand the purpose and rules of this sub, and to make resources more easy to find. To do that we're combining the monthly posts and adding this one as a permanently pinned post. In addition to the content you see below, we'll post any announcements or changes to the sub in this post.

*NEW\* - You can now choose from a few new flair options! Let us know if there are any you'd like to see as an option!

Mission Statement - Join our community to learn and share how you make your own gear (MYOG), including tents, tarps, hammocks, stoves, packs and anything else outdoor gear related. We encourage supportive, collaborative, and useful posts and comments free of advertising.

Resources and Links - The Wiki contains links to a variety of patterns, guides, and information on methods and materials. Answers to many questions can also be found using the sub’s search function. If you’re still not able to find the info you’re looking for, you can post your question in the Monthly Discussion post or create a new post to ask. We ask that you make an effort to find an answer using the available resources before creating a post.

Monthly Discussion Post - This is our recurring post to ask and answer small questions, or discuss topics you think are too small to warrant their own post. Our previously separate monthly post for buying and selling is being combined into this thread to increase traffic to both, and to make room for this stickied post.

Rules - To accomplish our mission, we ask that you respect the following rules for posting on r/MYOG:

1. Excessive self-promotion - Advertising

This subreddit is a community for exchanging information and inspiring creativity. It is not a place to post with the intent of promoting your business.

2. Excessive Self-Promotion - Project Shares

If you are a member sharing your myog work for the sake of sharing, we ask that you limit your project shares to roughly once per week. Information and sharing questions are encouraged, and more frequent posts of this type are encouraged within reason.

3. Off-Topic Posts/Comments - General

Posts and comments not related to self-made outdoor gear will be removed. Exceptions are for things such as kits or commercial products that are targets at the gear making community as long as the Excessive self-promotion rule is not violated.

4. Off-Topic - Which Sewing Machine?

This sub is not intended for open-ended questions about which sewing machine you should buy for MYOG. These post and comments will be removed.

5. Off-Topic - Commissions

Posts or comments relating to commissioned gear will be removed. Commission related posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGCommissions.

6. Off-Topic - Tactical Gear

Posts and comments about gear relating to firearms, weapons, or other types of tactical equipment (e.g. holsters, plate carriers, concealed carry, etc.) will be removed. These posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGtacticalgear.

Thank you! If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading! Now go forth and MYOG, and come back to share your journey!

I’ve been busy testing and altering my pattern for this fastpack. I think this would be incredible for someone looking to FKT. It is designed for running.

I made all the corners rounded and contoured the panels to the shape of your back.

The only update I might make is swapping out the fabric under the should straps for a less irritating .75 Membrane nylon or similar. Open to suggestions.

Materials: Ultragrid, Honeycomb mesh, Venom stretch mesh, Compression power mesh

I Have an old down jacket which has lost its puff. Wondering what I can turn it into ?

Before you mention the tennis ball - dryer method, I’ve tried it. This jacket is un saveable. I just feel like it’s an awful waste binning it and want to turn it into something for my camping setup. I have little sewing experience but willing to learn. Was thinking something like a down hat or using the feathers to re stuff a down sleeping bag? Any suggestions? Lmk!

Need advice on a sewing machine

So I have a bunch of little projects I’ve been waiting on until I get a decent machine. Well, I’ve decided I just can’t swing a Juki at the moment so looking for budget options for something that will see cordura nylon. What’s the cheapest (used is also fine) machine I can get away with that doesn’t require a huge learning process to use? Thanks for any suggestions.

How to Add Extra Webbing to Alpaka Modular Sling?Question
How to Add Extra Webbing to Alpaka Modular Sling?

A common complaint about the Alpaka Modular Sling is that a lot of its uppermost space is hard to use (it's a vertical bag). I've managed to make use of it by organizing enough things against each other that they hardly have space to move if the bag isn't open, but once the bag does open, they often fall down, and I'm finding that to be impractical.

I've seen a few folks on this sub modify their Alpaka bags, and am interested in doing the same. My thought is to add some elastic webbing to the top of the inner panel of the bag. I'm trying to figure out how best to do so along a few lines:

  1. Is there a certain kind of thread I should use to sew the elastic on?
  2. To what should I sew the elastic? I'm thinking to sew it to the black side portions rather than the orange back fabric; that seems safer somehow (although, is ripstop safer to sew to in general because... it's ripstop?).
    1. Is it worth creating a few loops in the elastic by sewing down some portions to the ripstop backing?
  3. How does one best make a knot in what they sew when working in this slightly geometrically stranger context?
  4. Is just any elastic alright? I happen to have some around from a previous project.
  5. Would it be better to instead use adhesive velcro to make a handful of things easily attachable to the top of the bag?
  6. Is it a bad idea/unsafe to do this at all? I've already been using this bag for at least around half a year, and I intend to continue to do so.

I've attached some photos of the area and a rough idea of the proposed mod (at least on the left side):

Here's the bag on its own. The panel that's visible is the one I'd like to modify, only on the inside.

On the left side, along the seam, the proposed mod (the elastic is just floating under the seam right now). I'd be doing the same on the right with a little bit of slack in the elastic.

Backpacking Packs Question

Why are all backpacking packs lid top with draw string over 42L? Why don't they make a 55L with zipper?

Custom Build

Anyone interested in building a custom pack bag?

First Custom Frame Bag Project

I made a custom half frame bag for my vintage Specialized hard rock. It's pretty messy since I didn't use a pattern and it was my first attempt, but I'm pretty happy with my results and it has held up so far! I repurposed a Thomson bag and an old car seat cover for the body, and then thrifted a pink + purple laptop case for the zipper area. The interior of the bag is also pink to match the frame

Loading capacity A+ e-ring?, it it safe for a 30L/8kg bag?

Hello, I can't find information about the loading capacity of the A+ aluminum e-ring. I'm planning to use for strap hooks for a 30L ripstop bag. What do you guys think? 8-10kg supported by 2 of these?
