Got these cheap bag hangers, to relieve hook creasing.
  • Picked up ten of these for about twelve bucks on amazon. They are a little small but work to lessen creasing on handles on bags hung on hooks.

Recommendation for a man's crossbody bag

Please help me find a perfect bag for my husband. He needs something for carrying phone/wallet/glasses/book reader for city travel. Not too big, but high quality, casual, but with nicer fabric/leather and nice looking hardware. He liked a couple of options at Tumi (small Alpha Pocket book), but I wonder if there is something better in that price range, or cheaper of equal quality/features. I have noticed that RFID is missing from Tumi crossbody, not a single protected pocket.

I should have mentioned dimensions. No bigger than 12 inches tall/long. He really liked the look and general aesthetic of Tumi and the quality of finishes. But we were at the outlet and I would like to explore other options.

He is in his mid 50s, I should have mentioned that.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone, I have learned a lot today about all the amazing options out there. Unexpectedly for me, he really liked Tom Bihn Side Kick. I think he just likes the look and texture of ballistic nylon. He also liked size, shape and organization. So, I have just ordered one in Burnt Orange.

Possible to EDC a Briefcase?

Is it normal or okay to EDC a briefcase for work and casual outings? I'm thinking materials like nylon or canvas. Was thinking of getting a new shoulder bag but messenger bags seemed geared towards bike riding with how they're strapped to the back. My lifestyle is built more towards walking and public transit. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Briggs and Riley 22 - suitcase vs. garment bag.

Hi all,

I’m looking at two B&R baseline 22 bags - comparing the suitcase which has the suited on top (expandable bag) vs. the 22 rolling garment bag. Seems the latter will hold more suits/formal clothes, but not sure if that many more and whether I will miss the CX compression the suitcase. Otherwise they are identical size, materials etc. Everyone praises the compression system, but I’m willing to let that go if the garment bag will truly prevent wrinkles in 2 suits and hopefully two shirts as well.

I typically travel with two suits, three shirts and two pairs of dress shoes. Also have a small personal item that will accommodate gym clothes, jeans etc. here are the links to the bags in question.

Any experience/thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Chrome sabin 3l vs venture 2.5??

Trying to decide between these 2, have seen and read ton of reviews on the bellroy... Anyone have experience with the sabin 3l? Or can compare the two?

Thanks in advance

What size bag do you need for overnight travel?

Sorry for the dumb question. I’m a young professional, never bought a proper backpack. I have a 14L messenger bag for EDC, but I often have to travel overnight for work. Need to fit: laptop, chargers, some toiletries, change of clothes, gym shoes, water bottle. I love the look of the Able Carry Daily Plus but I’m not sure 21L is big enough. Would love to hear what people think. Thanks!

Looking for a backpack to go with rolling carry on

*TLDR - here’s the criteria of the bag I’m looking for:

1. Somewhere Around 20L (16-22 is probably fine) 2. Has a luggage pass through 3. Has water bottle holder or at least super easy access to one without it being on the interior of the bag so I don’t risk getting tech & camera gear wet 4. Easy access to wallet, passport, keys, sunglasses and AirPods (the EG yoke pockets and slash pockets are perfect wish they had a smaller bag with luggage pass through) 5. Preferably no bag with front pocket “admin panel” stuff. I find those to be too prescriptive and take up space in a way that if my go to carry items don’t fit then the admin pocket becomes more hassle than anything.

I LOVE my Evergoods CTB26L. However it’s just a little bit in that weird size realm where it’s too small for my style of travel carry if I wanted to do one bag carry but too big for an EDC bag (more on the Evergoods in a sec).

I dont like one bag carry. I’ve tried big bags 30-35L+, minimalist ones and everything in between and have never been satisfied with making that work (especially now that I have a toddler). Either they’re too big and cumbersome or they’re too minimalist and I can’t get what I need for 7+ day trips dialed down to make it work.

So I’m wanting to travel with a small carry on rolling luggage (looking at aer or monos - unless y’all have a recommendation for good small carry ons too) and with that a backpack to carry my tech and personal items. Something in the 20L range. That I can slide under my seat. Since only the EG travel bags have a luggage pass through EG is out cuz nothing they make that is 20ish Liters has a luggage pass through.

Here’s the criteria: 1.

What do ya think? Anything out there or am I just screwed until Evergoods makes a CTB22? I saw Bellroy has an updated venture 20L bag that may work. But aside from that any other bags I should look at? Thanks y’all love this group by the way!

Alternatives to Tom Bihn Side Effect?

I recently purchased a Tom Bihn Side Effect, and in a first for my experience with Tom Bihn it arrived damaged! I've contacted their support, but I'm also finding that vs the Aer Go Sling 2 I was testing before it, the Side Effect's extra depth isn't really needed.

So, I'm still on the hunt for the perfect minimal sling/murse/waistbag/pouch.

Requirements:

  • shouldn't be much bigger than needed for: wallet, keys, phone, airpods, nanobag, pocket knife, & its own strap
  • should have a key leash / o-rings etc.
  • separate compartment for phone since that goes in and out the most
  • detatchable strap
  • can seamlessly convert between over-shoulder, crossbody/sling, and waist bag by shortening/lengthening the strap and be comfortable in all configurations
  • some internal organization

The Go Sling is nice, but its non-detatchable strap is too long for it to be used as a waist bag, and given how its straps are angled it makes an awkward over-shoulder bag. I'd prefer a separate compartment for phone. It also tends to slide down when crossbody to be under my armpit rather than staying centered on my back.

The Side Effect is nearly there but feels too wide and stiff. I was hoping the extra depth "wouldn't matter" because the fabric would compress, but it does feel chunkier than the Aer Go. Maybe the ballistic will break in over time and feel softer? It never made sense to me that their Side Effect is thicker than their Side Kick, which is a bigger bag that also has pockets on both sides of the interior.

I dunno what else on the market I've missed. Thanks in advance for recs!

Chrome sabin sling 3/6l

Dry Bags / Packing Cubes

I was really fan of my Ortlieb Dry Bag until recently when, after ten years of good use, it ripped apart.

Now i'm looking for alternatives. I can obviously just go back to Ortlieb, but are there others?
One of the great features it had was a valve that allowed for proper compression. It was also waterproof and - at 7l had the right size for me. (5l would also be ok, 7 is sort of upper end of what i'm looking for.
Any recomendations?

Moment 17l or Able Carry 13 stockists in the UK?

As per title, I'm interested in the two bags mentioned but getting hold of them in the UK, without ridiculous shipping costs seems impossible. I found one quote of £44 to shop the Able Carry to the UK and that's assuming I won't need to return it.

I'm close to London so hoping there is somewhere I can ideally go look at either bag before purchasing.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Help me find my ideal backpack!

Hello everyone!

I am looking for the one backpack for all my needs. Now, I realize that this elusive backpack that fulfills all my requirements probably wont exist - but with your help, I can get the next best thing!

What am I looking for/what is my use case?

I need an everyday backpack that I can bring to work and to university, that I can take with me on city trips and short hikes, that can hold all my work items + a few days worth of clothing. It should look like a regular backpack, nothing too bulky, yet able to fit some larger items.

For work I bring a rather standard 15-inch Dell Inspiron, wireless headset (sometimes with its dedicated case), mouse, charging brick & cable. Since I usually go straight to university after work, I also bring an A4 college notepad and a few pens. Rarely textbooks.

Sometimes after work/university, I like to go grocery shopping, since its right on my way home. In addition to whats mentioned above, Id like this backpack to fill standard groceries (vegetables, fruit, loaf of bread, spreads/jams, meat, 1 to 2 one-liter cartons of milk, cereal boxes, sometimes a case of 6 beers, ...). Ideally this backpack is able to fit some of these items, in addition to my work/school items. I reckon 20l and above is where I should look at.

In my free time I like to play Magic: the Gathering. In addition to my two deck boxes (Ultimate Guard Twin Flip n Tray - Dimensions: 114 × 203 × 90 mm // 4.5 x 8 x 3.55 in) I like to bring two binders (Ultra Pro Premium Pro-Binder - Dimensions: 310 x 250 x 35 mm // 12 x 10 x 1.38 in each). Besides maybe snacks, I dont bring anything else with me when playing Magic: the Gathering. No need for water bottle holders (but probably nice to have).

Some form of organization would be nice: sunglasses, powerbank, pens, tissues, small notebook, watchroll, ...

As I am not a fan of ordering a bunch of items and sending them back, and trying them in person is unfortunately not possible for me, as I havent found a store near me. I am located in central europe btw. No budget, but Id like it to be no higher than 300€

What am I coming from?

Until now I was using a generic Dell Laptop Backpack with one laptop compartment, the rest of it storage space. It was enough to fit my work/school items plus maybe a headphone case, but anything else and it was uncomfortable.

What am I considering?

At this point Ive looked at a few bags (not in person). These are my current favourites:

1) Evergoods CPL24

This seems to be the one that comes closest to fulfilling all requirements. It will certainly fit my work and school items, and it looks like it will fit a few cartons of milk and a sixpack of beer. It also looks like I can fit multiple days worth of clothing in addition to work and school items.

What concerns me though is that it looks a bit bulky. I still like the look, though I fear its a tad too big for the office or for city trips. Also expensive at around 330€

2) Bellroy Transit Backpack / Transit Workpack

I really like the look of these. Dimension wise even the smaller workpack is larger than the CPL24 (according to the specs), but it does not look like it through pictures. It does not seem to be as functional as the CPL24 however. The 28l version is almost certainly too large for me personally.

3) Able Carry Daily Plus

Also love the look of this one. Size wise it seems to be perfect - not too small, not too big. Going by the dimensions I found online, it is actually bigger than the CPL24, but I guess the D-Shape of it makes it contour more to cour body causing it to look smaller. Can certainly go to work/school with this one. What concerns me is the curved looking bottom - it does not look like a carton of milk or a case of beer would fit comfortably in there, neither would deck boxes and binders. Love the look of the X-Pac material though.

4) Alpaka Elements Backpack Pro

This might be my favourite one looks-wise, but this one is almost certainly too small. The bottom of the main compartment looks small to reach. A lot of organization though - if I wasnt looking for a backpack that does it all, I would almost certainly use this one for work/school and a different one for travel/groceries/Magic.

Others I have looked at:

5) Aer Teck Pack 3 / Pro Pack 24l

These look ... uninspired? The uneven opening of the main compartment does bother me. A clamshell opening is probably preferred for my use case - the Evergoods and Bellroy have one.

6) The Brevite Bag

Cool looking and a bit cheaper than the rest. Hard to estimate by the pictures if it can fit deck boxes/cases of beer.

7) Incase Icon

Lots of organization at the expense of internal volume it looks like. I do like the look of it, but have heard negative comments about its quality. Also expensive for that.

8) Osprey Aoede Airspeed

Honestly dont know a lot about this one. Does look a bit deep and similar D-shaped to the Able Carry. This one does look like it could support multiple deck boxes or milk cartons though. Might just go for this one since I can get it for around 90€.

9) Troubadour Apex Backpack

Similar to the Alpaka in the sense that it is slim, at the obvious expense of internal volume. Looks cool, but is expensive. Could be a consideration in a 2-bag solution.

10) TechPack-T73 X

Large and boxy looking, but seems like it strikes a balance between organisation and volume.

I am looking forward to hearing your experiences with any of these bags, or any other recommendation you have!

Aer Day Sling 3 v/s City Sling 2

This would be my first ever sling purchase and I would greatly appreciate your help. I’m hoping to fit in the following - Fujifilm X100VI with a JHS lens hood and a wrist strap - a set of URTH magnetic filters - slim wallet - MagSafe battery pack - air pods pro - an air tag - sunglasses - a set of keys

Additional things I’d ideally like to fit but aren’t necessary -passport while flying/at the airport -iPhone 14 pro - Nintendo switch But can replace this with a Game Boy Advance - Kindle

I had initially ordered a Bellroy sling mini - looks great but my god it’s so badly designed. You can’t access the main pocket properly. The stiffness of the material prevents it from expanding. And there’s a key ring in the main pocket. As much as I loved how it looked, I’ve had to return it as it’s non-functional.

I’ve narrowed it down to the Aer day sling 3 and looking through previous posts, it seems to be able to fit the camera with some space left for other things. But I’d like to keep things as compact as possible and looks like the aer city sling 2 also fits the camera and then more

I would greatly appreciate your advice (and pictures), specially if someone has the same or similar setup

Thanks

Looking for recommendations for a new EDC bag

I currently use a Maxpedition Malaga as my daily driver and every time I try something else, I always come back to it. Problem is that it's just a bit on the small side. So I'm hoping the hive mind here can help me find a replacement.

Feature checklist: - Sling bag (would be nice if it converted to a backpack but not necessary) - Either ambidextrous or right shoulder - PALS webbing - Size: 15-18 L

The Vanquest javelin 18 and 5.11 RUSH MOAB 10 both looked promising but reviews had me doubting. The Javelin strap looks less comfortable and the MOAB 10 zippers look annoying to deal with when used frequently.

One thing about the Malaga that seems uncommon is that the bottom end of the strap is on a swivel hook so it doesn't get twisted. I really do wish I could just have a bigger Malaga 🤷‍♂️
