Before you mention the tennis ball - dryer method, I’ve tried it. This jacket is un saveable. I just feel like it’s an awful waste binning it and want to turn it into something for my camping setup. I have little sewing experience but willing to learn. Was thinking something like a down hat or using the feathers to re stuff a down sleeping bag? Any suggestions? Lmk!
I Have an old down jacket which has lost its puff. Wondering what I can turn it into ?
Very interested in this idea. Where can I find a tutorial / a reference point on where to start
Did you wash the down before the drier? Could be worth a try (using appropriate detergent).

Yep, convinced the jackets just completely fucked lol
If you’re determined, you can open it up and suck out the old down and put it in the compost. There’s probably some place that will sell you a bag of new down. In the early days of MYOG, you could buy it from Frost Line, but they are long gone.
Not sure the jacket is worth enough to fully replace the down, the stitching is coming apart in some places too so I don’t think there’s any salvaging it. I feel like the down inside will be fine to reuse if I extract it, and I could take off the logo, and salvage some material from other areas of the coat, but as a whole its life as a jacket is over
Down hood/balaclava
This seems like the simplest idea but not sure where to start with it. I can’t seem to find any informational pages online on how to do this / what I would need
I recently stumbled across this video on how to make a down balaclava hood, looks like it requires some sewing skill but seems fairly straightforward
If the whole jacket has lost its puff, then it may not be worth salvaging. It wouldn't be worth trying to add the compacted, dead down to a sleeping bag. If part of it still has its pouf such as the sleeves, then you could try using it for a smaller project, but sewing with down has special considerations because the stitching has to be very close together so that the down doesn't escape. It can also be very messy with down floating everywhere. Just proceed with your eyes wide open. If you've got nothing to lose, it could be a good learning experience.
The jacket has lost its puff because it’s all clumped, I know if I cut open the jacket I could de clump it myself but it just seems impossible through the jacket material. I’ll keep in mind that point about the down stitching. Thanks
Take out all the clumpy down and you've got yourself a double layer wind shirt!
A down skirt! (Im suggesting this as a gender neutral piece of gear)
Down baseball cap(s)? I've seen some on Instagram and have been wanting to try it out for myself.
What about the jacket is "unsaveable"?
If the down is shot, it'll be useless as anything else like booties or hat. Keep the nylon.
If the exterior material or stitching is shot, save the down.
