Basic Questions (or Advice) About Boats or Racks? Click here first!Announcements

Got a basic question about which type of boat you should buy, or what type of rack your car might need? Before asking a question of the subreddit as a whole, please take a look at these two brief resources first. A lot of the commonly-asked questions on the subreddit can be answered by these two items:

These guides are a work in progress. If you still have additional questions, feel free to ask! When posing a question to the community, please be sure to be as specific as possible with your post title. That way you'll get the most helpful response from others browsing the sub.

A note for the broader /r/kayaking community:

Spring is on the way, and /r/kayaking has crossed the 80,000 member-mark. A big thanks to everyone who has and continues to contribute to the community here. As the weather warms up, and more people join us, we are likely to see an increasing influx of "beginner" questions about basic boat and gear purchases. A lot of these questions are very similar if not identical, and can be answered by a shared guide for the subreddit. Similar guides or FAQs are available for other subreddits specializing in gear-specific hobbies.

The mod team is in the process of developing a shared knowledge base on the subreddit wiki. The immediate goal is to be able to refer new users to a basic guide that concisely answers the most common questions. The longer-term goal is reducing the volume of low-effort posts with questions that could be answered by Google, and increasing the volume of valuable, specific questions and discussion on the subreddit.

Send us your suggestions!

If you have any suggestions about:

  • Good links with beginner information to share, such as how to pick out gear, or safety tips
  • Things you wish you knew when you started kayaking
  • Other tidbits of information that would be worth including in these intro guides

Please share them below so that we can consider including them in the guides.

Thanks!

6’2 looking at getting a kayak, any recommendations?Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations

I was looking at inflatable or folding kayaks for the ease of transportation but I know my height is going to be an issue. Any suggestions on a good starting kayak?

Ocean/Pond KayakQuestion/Advice -- Boat Recommendations

I’ve recently got into fishing a lot more lately, and me and my friend enjoy shore shark fishing (gulf of mexico in florida) as well as pond bass fishing. I have no knowledge on kayaks at all, are there any kayaks (preferably pedal driven) that i can take out through the waves and drop bait off, as well as be good for bass fishing on lakes? I’m well aware it’s better to paddle on the ocean so if there’s anyways where u can swap the pedal driven and plug it, i’d be greatly appreciated to hear about those. Thank you. (Price does not matter)

Planning a kayak journey - map apps, gear, considerations etc Question/Advice -- General

Hi all,

Later this year I intend to get my kayak licence and attempt to kayak (depending on the route and anticipated journey time...) from Peterborough to Bedfordshire, ideally Bedford.

Is this realistic?

I know I would start on the river nene, and then have to presumably hop out and in a lot. I have a solid 2 person kayak, and would be going with a capable friend and life jackets.

This post is to ask - are there any free or paid for apps, that allow me to simply put in A and B and get a route?

Has anyone attempted this and its not been possible.

Are there any safety considerations I should make, besides telling someone about this journey on the day - and having appropriate gear/water etc..?

TIA

Need recommendations Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations

Hey everyone, I’ve got around 1700 to spend on a kayak and I need some help choosing. I’m 5’11 around 190 pounds, fish in saltwater bays from shore and saltwater rivers. I don’t have a preference to pedal drive or paddle. I just want room to store fish, a 40L pack or so for an overnight beach camp, and a spot to mount a fish finder. Thanks in advance 🤙

Poor Boy from a poor familyQuestion/Advice -- Gear Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I am looking for opinions on cheap kayaks (see reasoning above).

The skinny: looking for ~10ft, prefer sit-in, mostly open water (maxes of abt 15 kt, 1 meter wave, slight white caps and some Class II/III rivers,
and basically Pelican, Quest, Evoke, Sun Dolphin, and Quest are the only ones I see in my price range (sub $500US). I am not inexperienced with kayaks and canoes (but also what something my sister, who is completely inexperienced could use).

Thank you.
