Are there any apps I can install to watch the water current and wind patterns?
SafetyThat current doesn't seem to be tidal currents, so be careful. I checked the golden gate and see nothing over 0.3kts but in reality, it gets up to 2kts today, other days more. Perhaps it's doing some wind-based current (?).
Which current layer were you checking? There's one labeled "tidal currents", which I would assume is exactly what it says on the tin. I could be wrong though, I haven't verified since I just realized it existed today.
Well, you're right and wrong. I had clicked on "currents", which I guess is something else. But I see similar discrepancy when I use the "tidal currents" layer. NOAA says 1.8 kts max flood at 9:18am. When I look at 9am on the windy app in the same spot I see only 0.5 kts. That's not good. Also, the flow animation seems to be unaffected by land masses. Also kinda suspicious. I think that feature wasn't ready for prime time.
I use windy.com for wind and weather. As noted in the other comment, Windy has a ton of other information. For currents and tides i use Deepzoom. com. Deepzoom shows some weather info also. Both services require some learning to get a good handle on them.
Deepzoom is not an app, sadly. It's what I use also. It's for USA waters only. (OP could be a little more specific about where).
For SF bay area, the BASK trip planner shows tidal currents and weather.
WIndy is a good wind app.
Weatherbug has an EXCELLENT lightning detection/warning alert system ever since they acquired Spark a few years back
MyRadar has some really hi-definition weather radars
As for current, are you referring to coastal waters? TidesNearMe will simply show you the tides in your area to give you an idea of what the current might be. For freshwater rivers/creeks any app that links/displays the USGS river gauges will be your friend.
I don't have strong recommendations for a tide app, but TidesNearMe is what I use. The nice thing is it has current predictions as well.
Not sure about currents but I use an app called Windy to check the wind for the day.
After checking the app, looks like it actually has a feature for currents as well.
