I once went to a school in Thailand, where the head teach was called Mr SupaYoda. ... being a star wars fan, I thought that was awesome.

Planning a kayak journey - map apps, gear, considerations etc Question/Advice -- General

Hi all,

Later this year I intend to get my kayak licence and attempt to kayak (depending on the route and anticipated journey time...) from Peterborough to Bedfordshire, ideally Bedford.

Is this realistic?

I know I would start on the river nene, and then have to presumably hop out and in a lot. I have a solid 2 person kayak, and would be going with a capable friend and life jackets.

This post is to ask - are there any free or paid for apps, that allow me to simply put in A and B and get a route?

Has anyone attempted this and its not been possible.

Are there any safety considerations I should make, besides telling someone about this journey on the day - and having appropriate gear/water etc..?

TIA

This would have been hilarious. I would love to see their facial expressions at the moment they realise they need to conjur up a new solution.

u/_glyph1c thats really handy to know! perhaps if I can find one the other way around.. that would be practical.

UK Based, Hertfordshire Dating Events that are Wheelchair FriendlyQuestion

I have a couple of questions - so thanks in advance for any response recieved.

- Are there any dating organisations that specifically cater to people with wheelchairs?

- Would there be a place to start this enquiry that is more appropriate than Reddit? (Council, charities?)

- Is this a daft question, and as long as the pub or restaurant hosting the event is accessible, the events should be?

- Separate from speed dating events, has anyone found a service that is particularly effective for helping people with disabilities meet lovely likeminded people, interested in finding romance?

Any advice in this area would be welcome. I have a friend who is charming, hilarious and has decent morals. He used to use crutches, and now is in a wheelchair permanently and feels this will hold him back in the dating world.

I personally think its very hard for anyone to date in this current climate, but I cannot imagine how he must feel.

I know his personality eclipses all, and he would have a lot of fun meeting new people, as he is so naturally sociable.

Cheers Reddit!

Accessible Singles Events / Wheelchair friendly Speed Dating

Title says it all.

I understand that generally speed dating involves moving between tables, and it would require more space to organise such an evening with wheelchair users in mind...

If anyone knows of any groups for meeting new people, or specifically dating meetups, that are in pubs with inclusive layouts... I would love to know.

At this rate, I am going to have to create this as a concept and host one myself. I have a friend who is smart, funny and looking for love! They just need a wheelchair-friendly place to meet their person.

TIA

I am sorry I cannot help. I just wanted to say your website is really neat! Nice work!

* DISCLAIMER* I am biased.

Nimbus Hosting is worth considering. They are a reasonably small hosting company in Hertfordshire. They manage their own infrastructure, and have great support. I guess they fall in the "agile" because they are small category. They are transparent with their pricing, and are reasonable for the uptime and support you get. All VPS packages, that can be quickly spun up, and a great UI platform for devs (no plesk/cpanel) They also provide bespoke dedi as required. All my PHP apps run well on there. Their target clients are WordPress agencies.

Less biased suggestions are Krystal and 20i

u/Guttchief it's part of a chain Charles Wells/Brewpoint They have nearly 200 pubs across the UK and France, I think most of them have pizza ovens, not sure if that part of the brand. these ones I have been to did pizza. bedfordshire business

Maybe once the station is upgraded in like 2035, currently that route shown on the map is a big no

Good luck with the date! This post is great, in my late twenties too, and moving to pboro, so this post is helpful.

If you like good food and music .. Embe Afro-Caribbean restaurant is a good vibe. It is also next to another pub/bar I forget the name off.

Ferry Meadows would be nice, and the suns started to come out properly. It would be cold, and some parts are currently flooded mind

Looking for a welcoming Catholic church

I have been getting more in touch with my faith recently and would like to meet like-minded people and intentionally make time to visit a place of worship for prayer.

Looking for recommendations for a nice, active religious community to join.

Ideally located near the city centre, but open to travelling for a particularly actively/engaged congregation or unusually aesthetic place of worship.

I am a young, man if that rules me out of any specifically female-only groups.

Romeenas. Com

Agreed. The website could use some tweaks. As mentioned above, better-quality images are essential. One of the standout features of jewellery is its clarity and you should watch the quality of your produce with quality images.

if you have found an answer to this, I would very much appreciate you sharing your findings.

I feel B corp is doing quite a good job, but I wonder if there are similar alternatives

Hopefully I can find a solution. I think if I was doing a presentation that was not live on a call, its easy enough to implement.

The on the call bit... perhaps the honus is on the other user to simply engage the tools available on their computer (which I would - hopefully not incorrectly - assume they already know of, and have in place)

I have no live captions currently. I just have myself superimposed over a presentation I display. So if the user on the call turned on their accessbiitly settings that would work, but I wondered if I could just add my own subtitles. Maybe its overkill but I figured it would be nice to try.

The speakers using the software were part of a charity and tey encouraged me to try and implement a new accessibility to my workflow, and this is just about all I can think of.

Thank you wingraker. I will look into maybe changing the presenting software as this would be the bit that needs te captions I think. Maybe changing google meets for teams would do the trick.

Thank you. I will have a look into the software I use in combination with google meets, to see if there is a better option.

Thank you for your reply. I think maybe I will just have a slide at the beginning prompting people to turn on captions as required. I was hoping to be able to sort of force display the text as standard across all calls though. I shall continue to investigate.

Looking for video call presenting software with subtitles - for deaf users

I recently attended an event, where the speakers had a headset they passed around. As they spoke some Microsoft software added subtitles to the screen and they were able to enhance the presentation, a deaf gentleman in the room was overjoyed at being catered for in this way. It was particularly moving.

A significant part of my job involves presenting virtually on Google Meets. I use a pit of software to superimpose myself onto a presentation, and then when on a Google Meets call I simply select that software as the output rather than a camera. All very fun.

The software I use for the presentations does not allow me to add subtitles, and Google Meets only lets me add speech to text subtitles for myself. I cannot force it show subtitles to the other call participants.

Additionally, I usually shrink myself down, so I am out of the way when showcasing our software int he demo...

So a concern of mine, is that is I added subtitles to the Google Call client, when I minimise myself, it would simply shrink the text too.

My question is two fold really (apologies for the rambling)

  1. has anyone used Google Meets and added subtitles (for the other users in the calls to see what I am saying)?
  2. Is there a presenting software anyone is aware of, that allows you to simply toggle on speech to text subtitles.

I intend to post this in another tech sub shortly... so apologies if this is the wrong place!

However the end goal is to improve the experience of deaf individuals, and to find a solution that I can push our company to switch to using for future in person events we present at as well as video calls.

thanks in advance! 🙏🏻
