I recently attended an event, where the speakers had a headset they passed around. As they spoke some Microsoft software added subtitles to the screen and they were able to enhance the presentation, a deaf gentleman in the room was overjoyed at being catered for in this way. It was particularly moving.
A significant part of my job involves presenting virtually on Google Meets. I use a pit of software to superimpose myself onto a presentation, and then when on a Google Meets call I simply select that software as the output rather than a camera. All very fun.
The software I use for the presentations does not allow me to add subtitles, and Google Meets only lets me add speech to text subtitles for myself. I cannot force it show subtitles to the other call participants.
Additionally, I usually shrink myself down, so I am out of the way when showcasing our software int he demo...
So a concern of mine, is that is I added subtitles to the Google Call client, when I minimise myself, it would simply shrink the text too.
My question is two fold really (apologies for the rambling)
- has anyone used Google Meets and added subtitles (for the other users in the calls to see what I am saying)?
- Is there a presenting software anyone is aware of, that allows you to simply toggle on speech to text subtitles.
I intend to post this in another tech sub shortly... so apologies if this is the wrong place!
However the end goal is to improve the experience of deaf individuals, and to find a solution that I can push our company to switch to using for future in person events we present at as well as video calls.
thanks in advance! 🙏🏻
I once went to a school in Thailand, where the head teach was called Mr SupaYoda. ... being a star wars fan, I thought that was awesome.
