I ackchyually shat my pants
This is not my video, found on /u/unexpected and was surprised that a yak would be confused as a meal by a shark
This is a fairly frequent occurrence actually. There are even unconfirmed studies being done to prove sharks target the color yellow more than other similar bright colors.
Additionally, sharks are dumb and like to test what things are by biting them.
Edited for information accuracy, thank you to commenters below for kindly correcting my misinfo. Bulls are colorblind and sharks see yellow almost like white.
Shark and ray vision comes into focus (phys.org)
Some sharks can't actually see color. What's probably happening with the yellows, is that the transmissivity of yellow/chartreuse is higher in the water than say, pure white--and its higher than the transmissivity of the orange.
The shark sees the yellow as white, and the orange as a dark color. So by putting the paddle next to the boat, you're showing it "Hey, there's a fish by this boat." Probably the same thing with the lore about sharks hating yellow. They don't hate it. They can just see it from farther away--and are thus more likely to check it out

Much better explanation, Maybe hate was the wrong word, target might have been better.
My takeaway: Give yellow paddles to irritating friends...and Orange/black is my friend...I don't like how is foot is still in the water as he's screaming and the shark takes away his paddle...my foot would be out of the water so fast...
I mean their antennae, hands, and sense of touch are essentially their mouth. The ultimate scratch crunch and sniff.
Damit hahaha. Who’s got the spray paint? I gotta switch to blue
Bulls don’t care if something is red, they in fact are colorblind to the color red.
You know, I now remember finding that out a few years ago and forgetting lol!
Unrelated, Nice username. I’ve had a few FJCs, always loved them.
My fj is a prime component in my kayaking lifestyle
I totally get it, mine used to be as well! I live on a motoryacht these days, and don’t drive nearly as much; so I sold the FJ and got a cheap XJ. Now to kayak I just drop the yaks off the boat and go!
I do miss how great the FJ interior felt to be in, enjoy it!!
I noticed in Scotland that the seals seemed to pay more attention to the yellow boats
The plus side to yellow boats - and specifically why I use them - is boaters can easily see them better compared to a lot of other colors.
Yup. I like High Visability. I have an orange boat with Orange Drysuit or Cag. Don't have to worry too much about sharks in the UK.
Not that it's a scientific study by any means but i recall the Mythbusters testing that "red" theory and proving it to be false. Just sayin...
As far as aquatic animals are concerned, I'd assume that anything in the water would be fair game...
Welp, no more Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikinis for me
There are very rare exceptions (only 2 attacks on kayaks not involving fishing), but the overwhelming majority of shark attacks are on kayak anglers and are because the shark is attracted to and often actively trying to get the angler's fish.
In addition to the enticing commotion fish make when being reeled in, most anglers bleed their dead fish to improve the meat quality (like any butchered animal), and many kayakers keep their catch fresh by dangling them off the side of their kayak on a "stringer," either alive to maximize freshness or even when dead because the water is cooler than the air.
This kayaker is fishing; the digital screen in the center is his sonar fish finder, one fishing rod is laying on the right side of his deck, and the center pole/pillar is a fishing rod holder. Unless you're fishing, the risk of predators attacking a kayak is almost non existent (again, I only read of two non-fatal exceptions). If you're worried about your catch attracting sharks, bleed and store them in an ice chest/soft sided cooler rather than into the water (but landing the fish could still potentially attract predators).
Good day to wear the brown underwear
the speed of that attack..that's absolutely terrifying
imagine if the paddle blade had been black and shoe yellow :0
Just mad because he stole one of his fish
Kayaks have gone from a tool for hunting seals to being hunted as seals :p
New fear unlocked!
Hello no!
Wonder where this is
It's clearly the sea, and all sea connect to one another beside the dead sea, because, well, you know... it's dead.
There is a reason we refer to international Orange, as "international shark yum yum"
Holy shit!!!
WHOA!!
Shark Bytes had this clip in a video, apparently there was a dead seal nearby and the shark was defending it. So PSA, don't kayak near dead stuff.
I used to get pretty creeped out thinking about this kind of situation when I had an inflatable. Wasn't so much of a worry in the intercoastal, but man, any time I took that thing out in the Gulf, every shadow made my hind end clench up.
I think I would shit my pants.
