Bill would require Iowa teachers, students to sing national anthem
Removed - Not OnionyLet's face it. Those Republican legislators are glad to throw tax dollars away if it keeps them in control over the other places they throw tax dollars to.
That's okay, they will blame the ACLU for wasting taxpayer money by challenging unconstitutional laws and their supporters will eat it up.
Meanwhile complaining that dems sent 50 cents to a museum.
I KNOW COMMUNISM WHEN I SEE IT!!!
Or give a hungry kid a meal.
That's socialism to give hungry kids lunch at school.
They don't need food they have plenty of boot to eat!
And claim that anyone against this law hates America. Nevermind that compulsory patriotism smells a bit... Pyongyangey...
Exactly. It doesn't matter anyway. No one is gonna check, and they're just gonna go on TV and talk about how all the money is being wasted by "civil rights", or the demon-crats, or Biden, or something.
Oh republicans LOVE throwing around government money. But they only live it as long as they get to do it.
This is exactly what’s happening across the board. Politicians have always been crooks on both sides of the aisle but this new wave of republicans seeing what they can actually get away with is going to destroy us. People are fucking stupid.
I mean, those tax dollars are going to Republican aligned law firms. It’s very much part of the grift.
They always need a crisis, too. They'll rally Republicans across the country.
Lol. Fuckin maybe try and solve some problems rather than wasting everyone’s time and resources on this shit.
They can't do that while they've got so many problems they've invented to solve.
It's a state with a multi billion budget surplus. Our citizens are so far removed from the knowledge of how much money that is, that we shot down using $1 million dollars of that surplus to completely revamp housing for park rangers in our public park because people didn't realize it was less than .1% of our surplus.
You're in a Republican state. Those billions are going to your richest citizens. Meanwhile in Minnesota we are feeding kids. Your governor says hungry kids shouldn't get food because they are too fat.
With the way she's targeted our state auditor, I've got the distinct feeling they're being misappropriated. She's also putting our public school funds up for grabs by private schools, which in my opinion is the absolute least republican idea ever. I hate that we're going to have to reap the seeds of idiocy she's sowing before people realize how damaging she is and give her the boot.
Starving kids forced to sing patriotic shill. Pyongyangey indeed.
Right? Hungry kids being forced to sing a song of allegiance to the very country that thinks feeding them is "socialism" and a waste of money.
Isn't that one of those states that just refused the federal gov to send money to poor families to help feed the kids over the school holidays?
Hello? There isn't any fixed star in our constitutional constellation anymore. This Supreme Court is inching its way towards returning (Christian, of course!) prayer to public schools. They reversed Roe, they don't care about stare decisis.
And the citizens of Iowa will vote for it and say thank you sir, can we have some more?
Source: Know way too many Iowans.
Can confirm. Iowans are stupid as fuck.
Idiots Out Wandering Around
when they repeatedly lose in court because this is patently unconstitutional on its face.
The current SCOTUS does not make me optimistic about their chances of losing. The conservative majority has already blatantly ignored evidence to produce the decision they want.
I'm not so sure.
The US Supreme Court is packed with religious zealots now. I wouldn't be surprised if they overturn the Jehovah's Witnesses ruling.
Let them sing it. They don’t even know the words. Trump proved that.
Maybe they should spend that time studying the Constitution instead.
Shhh, we're moving towards all the dumb states in the middle feeling they can ignore the federal government and laws, and eventually will secede and make their own despotic, handmaid's-tale wasteland, while the coasts can pick up where 2012 left off and move towards something better.
Supreme Court settled this years ago. Absolute waste of time and money
This is exactly what they do. Absolute bullshit nonsense like this yet they never, ever try and actually help society and this country as a whole at all in any way, shape or form.
Anyone brought up with the Republican mindset needs to wake the fuck up, stop making being conservative an identity and start thinking for yourself. Realize how toxic that shit has become and break the fuck away.
Because nothing says "Freedom" like forced, public expressions of patriotism.
Jesus fucking Christ. What fucking hell hole shit idea is this.
I hate MAGA America so so so so much.
Would love to see the "libertarians" weigh in on this one.
Yup, MAGA goobers really hammering what we need to make America “great” alright.
Eliminate marriage age requirements, let people bone their first cousins, and force people to mandatorily recite a pledge like North Koreans refusing to acknowledge dear leader has a butthole.
Then wages will stop stagnating, everything will stop being expensive, and we’ll finally be “great”.
Good Lord those paint chips they were wolfing down must have been absolutely delicious.
I’m sure they’d say something like “it’s better than being indoctrinated into the cult of wOkE”
Reasons to vote against the GOP….every election
I was never ashamed of my flag till tRump came along
I was around when Reagan became president, and the first and second Bush became president. It's been mostly terrible in my lifetime and have honestly never been proud. Add Trump to that and you're never going to convince me I should be either.
And gave the flag a reach around.
Fam you really suggesting trump would give anybody a reach around?
Without debating how sincere libertarians actually were, I honestly kinda miss the time when trendy vein-bulging conservatives broadly centered their ranting on the gold standard, Obamacare's secret communism & 'evil big gubment stealing muh monies!!!1'.
And not immigration conspiracies, slurs, or weird anti-masturbation propaganda.
Ya see, that’s always been their bread n butter. They shift every seven years or so to make it look new. They caught the car this time w the concept of lgbtq so now it’s yo the next point. It’ll never stop till they are last on the hill toppin their cap bc at one point they knew a woke
Whole ass death cult.
The Republicans are the ones who argued that forced speech infringed on my freedom of speech in order to repeal the fairness doctrine, so this seems like a backwards step for them
It's almost like nothing they do has any sort of ideological consistency...because to them power is all that matters.
"The issue is power" -Melanie Kaye/Kantrowitz
We used to mock the USSR for forced patriotism
And having a wall
We did this while simultaneously having kids recite the pledge of allegiance every fucking morning in public schools. It may not have been law, but that shit was not optional for the kids or their teachers at the time.
We did this while simultaneously adding "under god" into the pledge and having kids recite the pledge of allegiance every fucking morning in public schools
My first thought was post 1933 Germany.
The Soviets would love this shit
North Korea
I, for one, love our new overlords! All hail MAGA (I don't want to be in a political reeducation camp first)
Don't be a wus. Look up the origin of the word Sabotage.
It's a fun read.
We've formed a committee to understand the ramifications of bread on the so-called "sandwich."
"Out of the ashes
The eagle rises still
Freedom is calling
To all men who bend their will."
- The Hot Wind Blowing, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Pretty sure this is Nazi/ Soviet level propaganda shit.
I seem to remember several stories in history class of people being dissapeared when they refused to take part in mandatory national fellatio.
The Supreme Court already fought this fight about the Pledge, years ago.
They know, they don't care. Because they also know not one of their idiot voters cares about what the constitution actually says, or actually means.
Oh no they read the 2nd Amendment part real loud! But they ignore the other ones…
But even so, conveniently forget to read all the way through "well regulated militia."
They throw these nonsense laws and bills out to appease their voters. They know full well that it won't work and will be swatted down.
If it passes, their voters love it.
If (when) it does not pass, the voters love it because they can complain about it.
An angry voter is a consistent voter.
Yeah, but that was before the Talibangelicals stacked the court thanks to Moscow Mitch.
That was the car they didn’t really want to catch. Hard to campaign on outrage for these single issue voters when they got what they wanted.
Roe*
But now we have the blatantly Republican Supreme Court
1943ish
Well unless Abbott is dealt with, they're going to think they can just do whatever they want regardless of what anyone tells them.
Do you know which case? I would like to read it!
Coerced patriotism is the best kind of patriotism. 🙄
Force them to do the Bellamy Salute while singing too! /s.
Next we'll be forced to line the streets and praise "dear leader"
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Freedom of speech, not freedom of singing. - Alito, as he taps forehead
Republicans: Money is a form of speech
Singing is not.
Bonus for them banning singing: they can go after Taylor Swift. They've been chomping at the bit to do that for a while now.
Fuck that, I didn't even require my own students to say the pledge if they didn't want to. Welcome to the cult of nationalism.
Haven’t said the pledge or sang the anthem since I was a kid. Watching the Rodney King beating in elementary school really taught my class how not free some of us are.
Good, because you can't. That's like the bare minimum for 1st amendment.
... And laugh at North Korea for doing the same.
Republican leaders want to emulate North Korea. Aside from the being non white part on account of racism.
Really tackling the important stuff
1st Amendment says no.
Yeah I’m pretty sure this won’t last long before someone takes it up with SCOTUS. But they’re so maga minded they might just find some bullshit reason this isn’t a violation.
I’m curious about how they’d have to accommodate a foreign exchange student though.
How many verses? All four?
Not even my 10th grade history teacher can remember all four
And how many choruses, hell let's start signing loyalty oaths before we give kids their books!
Make that 2 oaths!
3!
(This is a reference to Catch 22, if you didn't catch it)
And what about that high note? Do we have to hit that too?
Conservatives really have nothing going for them except virtue signaling and fear mongering, huh? They put all their energy into bills like this and whipping their base into a terrified frenzy over the scary minorities. But what’s their economic policy? How do they actually plan to fix anything? I know that the suffering and distraction is the point. But their voters will never realize this because they push any doubts out of their mind before they can even question anything.
Me singing the National Anthem would be considered desecration.
That has already been ruled unconstitutional by SCOTUS.
In 1943.
The court nowadays will throw that out the window and say this is ok.
The court might say it doesn't go far enough and we should also do mandatory Bible lessons
This is some North Korea bizzaro stuff. It's already bad enough children are forced to pledge allegiance to a polyester flag every day every year for 12 years.
Bill sounds like an asshole
Fuck Bill!
Is this before or after the mandatory MAGA youth rally?
“Class, now kiss the ring in the photo of dear leader!”
Compelled speech; this won’t stand up for a nanosecond in court.
Forced speech is not free speech. That law would be overturned. Plus it's stupid. Why are our politicans so stupid?
Because they’re paid to be that way. They don’t want to lose any of that sweet, sweet donor puddin’.
But can it force them to sing it well, or in tune?
And are they allowed to hold up class by singing lots of long riffs? I love the idea of an Iowan classroom erupting into a Black church praise break for an hour to skip a quiz.
At the very least sing it sarcastically.
Did they say which anthem, or can there be some trolling to be done?
Hate’m, but the Russians have a pretty kick ass sounding anthem. God Save The King is also beautiful.
We already stole God Save the King and turned it into My Country 'tis of Thee
This is a great way to make all high schoolers stop singing the national anthem.
Send this to all relevant legislators.
My schools required pledge of allegiance every day. Neither should happen.
More performative bollocks from the republicans, as if there aren’t more important things to deal with.
I remember in elementary school (here in Alabama, private school) we had to do the pledges every morning. We had to pledge allegiance to the American flag, the Christian flag, and the Bible.
I have never been a Christian lol
“Iowa republicans push bill in effort to rename Iowa to North Korea”
I wish Republicans weren't such terrible humans.
There's no patriotism like forced patriotism
LMAO imagine school resource officers arresting elementary school children because they dont sing your song
Ooh ooh ooh I get to be the one singing it Elmer Fudd style!
"Anna wockets wed gware"?
Ooh yes please. 👍👍
Yessss! “Gave pwoof thwooda night dat ow fwag was stiw dere…”
This was settled a long time ago. You can't be compelled to say anything.
That sounds like a violation of the first amendment. For conservatives, that's the Constitution you hold so close and dear.
I wonder if secretly there are lawyers who want such legislation to get passed only so they can then make money to fight it. So obviously unconstitutional.
Omg they’re fucking crazy
Who is this Bill, and what makes him the boss of Iowa?
Bill sounds like a dick
That's a first amendment violation, full stop.
Ah yes forced nationalism that's always made people super happy to live there
North Korean ass state.
Back door way to defund public schools? First amendment lawsuits.
No time to teach calculus but we always have time for the national anthem. Ugh!
Meanwhile, in Texas, they declare war on America.
Why can’t our politicians focus on more important things? This country is a joke in so many ways.
Nope. 1st amendment
Increased nationalism has never ended bad.
Why do conservative politicians always have the most brain dead.priorities?
Force 'em to do the Carlton Dance instead.
Party of small government. But only when it comes to regulating businesses’ ability to screw workers and consumers over.
Why aren't lawmakers held liable for violating constitutional rights when they get legislation passed that they know is unconstitutional?
Yeah, there should be fines for flagrant violations of the Constitution or something
When this happens in other countries, we call it indoctrination.
if you have to force people to sing your patriotic song then you’ve already missed the point of a democracy
This is an important point. Akin to forcing people to believe in a religion. As my 12 step program says, “attraction, not promotion.”
Obviously unconstitutional.
The Christofascists also want public schools to be able to accept volunteer "chaplains" who have no licensing or certification.
Oh, that pesky First Amendment.
And liberty and justice for all...
What is the point of the national anthem and why is it mostly only sung before sporting events? I’m sure it’s sang elsewhere but not sure where.
Freedom of religion be dammed.
Did a fourth grader write this bill? Honestly, could they do less?
These are re same folks who can’t figure why young people are leaving the state, right?
Aside from the fact that this bill is completely ridiculous, why the hell do we only sing the first verse of “The Star Spangled Banner”?
The first verse is all about uncertainty over whether the country remains free and independent. It literally ends by questioning whether the symbol of freedom and bravery still exists, or if it’s been conquered by the British.
The second verse is the inspirational one. Dawn breaks over a misty morning, and the enemy is still waiting to destroy the American independence movement, but then something catches the first beams of sunlight reflecting off a mysterious object. As the light brightens, it becomes clear that it is the flag, still standing and still representing a free America and giving the hope to keep fighting
Oh yeah that’ll hold up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73ZsDdK0sTI
"a bunch of...bombs in the air"
Sounds like North Korea.
Even this Supreme Court would strike that down.
Good luck enforcing that.
Seriously, what is wrong with these people
Doesn’t North Korea do something like this? Hmm
What would happen if a teacher didn't enforce it?
For example when my dad was teaching he always stepped out of the room during the pledge.
I really hope some students kneel for that fucking song if this embarrassing shitshow of a law becomes reality.
Also, let me get this straight. They want to celebrate the individual freedom of Americans by forcing those same Americans to sing a song? My goodness, is the right-wing the most ignorant, unevolved group of fucks.
Well you see, being forced to sing that song every day will automatically make kids patriotic...err look good on my ad next time I run for reelection if I luck out and get it to pass.
Of course. Seig Heil is next.
Fucking make me you corn fellating fucks
Didn’t the Supreme Court rule this unconstitutional during WW2?? Some idiots tried to require it cuz you know “ patriotism “ but the Supreme Court said no. Wait , that was for the pledge of allegiance? Same difference
Mmm, yes. I love it when the government seeks to trample my rights and form a totalitarian regime.
Definitely gives me a sense of pride in my nation, so much so i oughta sing about it!
Pretty sure West Virginia Board of Education vs Barnett settled this... but with the current Supreme Court who knows
And if Iowa doesn't like the answer I guess they will just pull a Texas and not recognize the decision
Who is this Bill guy and why does he want people singing in school?!
Bill is a dick
I believe that falls under the umbrella of compelled speech.
Wow wtf. Where's freedom of speech protectors going to chime in. Where are the anti-indocrenation crowd?
Which version must they sing? The one that has "under God" it'll it? Ffs.
Forced patriotism... How fascist
This is indoctrination.
Why does the Mississippi River flow south? Because Iowa sucks.
Who is Bill?
Mandatory patriotism is false patriotism.
Boo compelled speech boo
The US loves its indoctrination
Nothing says "freedom" like indoctrination and forced patriotism.
fascism, if you didn't know, starts like this
So now thousands of hungry kids will have to sing the praises of a country whose politicians fuck them over at every turn.
Nothing says Constitutional right to free speech like passing a law forcing people to sing the national anthem whether they want to or not. Next up: a law that forces teachers and students to recite the lord's prayer in public schools.
Republicans love forced patriotism
Freedom of Speech should include the freedom to not have to say (or sing) anything that we don't want to
Not only is it unconstitutional, but it's a really hard song to sing.
Forced Patriotism just like North Korea! Freedumb wooo!
Next they'll force schools to hang "Dear Leader's" picture in every classroom. And God help you if "inspectors" find one piece of dust on one of the pictures.
Then we will have to leave flowers in front of a giant bronze statue of "Dear Leader."
And sing songs praising "Dear Leader"
This shit is so weird! After when you’re done with school and all there is no point in having this. Just Nationalist rhetoric
Super weird level of fascism
Being forced to sing a song about “the land of the free.” Irony is dead.
The people passing this know that it has no hopes of ever making it past the supreme Court.
The government cannot compel your speech.
But they aren't actually trying to pass it through just throwing it out there so that they can get on Fox News off of the backs of their taxpayers when they are fighting the lawsuit.
And … that’ll be several hundred thousand to maybe million dollars in lost legal fees billed to the citizens of Iowa when they repeatedly lose in court because this is patently unconstitutional on its face.
Lol. Fuckin maybe try and solve some problems rather than wasting everyone’s time and resources on this shit.
