This is why I don’t do salad bars some people are disgusting.

It’s way too common. Congratulations. You have seen a fraction of what I have noticed while working in multiple grocery stores for 5.5 years.

I’ve seen the following:

Countless people taking one bite out of a donut from the self serve case and then putting it back.

People who have ready access to tongs/scoops at the salad bar but grab stuff bare handed anyway.

Someone took the ladle from the self service soup and ate from it.

A pickup employee picked up bread from the self serve section of the bakery while wearing utility gloves that had come in direct contact with dirty pallets and trash. (Pickup employees get no food safety training)

And tbh, this is just the stuff I witnessed personally and what I can recall immediately.

When I was a very young and naive social worker in a major city. I worked for a nonprofit organization. I was assigned to take a group of individuals with chronic mental health issues to Old Country Buffet for an mandated monthly outing from the group home. Keep in mind I was out numbered.

Immediately upon entering, several of the group members swarmed the buffet and started shoveling food from the buffet into their mouths with the serving spoons. Imagine heads jammed under the plastic sneeze shield and giant spoonfuls of Mac and cheese being crammed into their mouths and noodles flying off the spoon into other dishes. Slurping spaghetti into their mouths. Hands in jello and dunking chicken tenders into the gravy with their hands.

I couldn’t control them. The restaurant called the police. I was crying and worried I’d lose my job.

It just got worse and worse. One of the group members didn’t make it to the toilet and pooped his pants and one vomited at the table.

The police escorted us out and helped me load everyone in the van. A week later the company received a letter from a lawyer barring the company from visiting the restaurant. They got the name of the company off the side of the group home van.

It’s been almost 30 years and I’m still traumatized by the memory and still in social work.

I watched two women eat the fuck out of the wings at the the local grocery store's self serve wing bar and they tossed the bones right back into the steam trays that held the rest of the uneaten wings.

That's disgusting.

At my local 7/11 I used to take my kids on Friday to get treats and drinks. A lot of parents did on Fridays. One day we got there a bit later than usual and saw a family of three kids right by the slurpy and fountain machines jamming their grimy hands up all the dispensers. Worse yet is the mom was right there watching the little shits do it. That ruined what used to a fun a thing to do on Fridays. I know those things are not super clean and all but seeing it with my own eyes sucked.

I was at the er with my husband a couple weeks ago. There was a woman with 2 small kids under 5. With no shoes on for starters. The kids were running around like mad. So she gets them some chips from the vending machine to try and calm them down. The little girl drops one on the carpet of the EMERGENCY ROOM and goes to pick it up. I say " Noooo, don't eat that" a little too loudly out if motherly instinct. The mother Gave me nasty looks apparently. I was too busy trying not to throw up to notice.

The amount of times, multiple times a day, I would hear customers using the restroom and never even turning the faucet on before they left was disgusting. I’m crazy but working retail has made me clean every bottle I buy and spray things down. People are gnarly.

I used to work at Whole Foods and certain people with dogs used to feed them from the buffet lunch table. I don’t trust anything that people can touch. Just the other day I’m standing in line at embassy suites to get my drink I see a certain lady reach her disgusting hands into the chip bin to get a snack and ate it right in line. No one batted an eye but me 😭😭 they had tongs but even that disgusts me because they lay the tongs into the the food after everyone and their mothers touched the tongs. Does no one care about germs !!!!

Yeah I stopped buying from bulk bins, and don't eat home cooked/prepared food at potlucks

I once saw a guy shoot up outside a grocery store, then came inside with blood dripping down his arm and eat out of the bulk bin. Saw it, reported it, the guy got arrested and the contents of the bin were discarded.

But I always think of how many times people are not seen...

that behavior has been going on for ages, by all ages. I'm really surprised there are stores still using bulk bins (without scoops)

I think I've only seen these bins in candy stores, but it has a hatch on the bottom so you can't do this.

This is exactly why I don't buy Candy from the bulk bins at WINCO. I have witnessed kids ( more than once) sticking their nasty slobbery hand in there, picking out candy to shove into their mouth. Parents not giving a flying F.

I call that ‘poopy no washy’ food. I don’t do bulk. I don’t eat the food left out at the office. People are disgusting.

That’s why they’re called gross-ery stores. 🤢

I watched a woman in the condiment isle proceed to open jars of pickles, smell them, close them back up and put them back on the shelf. I saw her do this to at least 3 jars! I was mortified.

People are gross. Like... imagine how gross you think ppl would be in public and then multiply it.

If you've been on social media for a while, you've seen all of those videos of just normal looking people doing disgusting shit out in public. Like the pervs who want to finger their partners asshole and sniff. You know they're not washing their hands after that. Nah... they're touching EVERYTHING

This kind of stuff is gross.

During the height of Covid one of our local markets left bagels in a bin at child height.

Kids would reach in and play with them, and one sneezed into the bin.

To its credit, the bakery removed that bin after I told them about the sneeze.

It remains off the floor to this day.

People these days I hate when people don't wash their hands that's my biggest pet peeves "oh ya I'm crazy" shut the freak up and go wash your grubby hands you disgusting prick

Don't tell OP about the prepared food section of grocery stores at night. 

I was in McDonald’s today eating lunch and this woman had a new born baby and she laid the baby on one of the tables that people eat from and changed the babies diaper. I told my wife “how dumb do you have to be to change a baby’s diaper on a table where people eat”. The woman looked at me like how could you say that.

According to a documentary I’ve seen if you steal pick n mix you end up getting an asbo and after THAT you end up with the power of immortality .

I have seen such acts in the bulk section and will now never buy anything bulk, except bird seed. I see people fisting their entire arm into bins for no reason. People eating from the bins. Kids biting something and throwing it back inside, and dear Lord, the women who palpate every GD roll in the bin, with their fingers, and then not purchase anything!

Was working at a scout camp and went out to refresh the container of cherry tomatoes on the salad bar. Watched a kid ignore the spoon and reach his hand into the croutons, grab a handful, and drop them on his salad. I said "WTF, were you raised in a barn?" He just gave me a blank look and turned around. I picked up the container of croutons and tossed them in the garbage. 2 minutes later, a Scoutmaster comes up and gets in my face saying "Who are you to insult my boy?" I told him exactly what happened and he deflated quickly. To his credit he said "OK, thank you, I'll take care of that." Some people just don't know any better. Either way, I have been a bit leery when it comes to salad bars ever since.

I guess you should’ve told the manager I wonder what they would’ve done? Ignore it or replace the top layer? I guess you can’t throw away all the chocolate every single time someone puts their hand in it? I’ve never thought about people putting their hands in there. From now on, I’m only gonna buy chocolate that’s individually wrapped if it’s in bulk, he was probably scratching his bare balls

I saw a guy grab some sample cheese out of a bin with his bare hands. The kind where there's a little cup of toothpicks to use so nobody touches them. I stopped eating free samples of anything after I saw that.

I thought they did away with those bins during COVID🤢

I don't do buffets either because they are just as gross. And before I became self-employed, I refused to participate in covered dish events at my former office. Nopity nope nope nope.

Several years ago I was in a grocery store that sells decorated cookies in a self-serve rack. A fat little girl was holding two cookies in her disgusting hands, wanting her mom to buy one. Mom had her put them back and she picked a different untouched one to buy. I waited for an employee to walk by and she removed the contaminated cookies.

Sorry, that was me. I keep my hands pretty clean, and definitely eat the one and only one I touch. I also cheat on the bulk codes I type in at the self checkout. Sorry.
