It could be the shitty material it's made out of. It looks the same material as mine (I don't know what it is) but it stains so easily and I hate it. I hope some day to be able to afford a kitchen remodel and go with stainless steel. Can't just replace the sink now because it's one piece with the countertop. I go at it with a melamine sponge every so often to remove those stains and never let it get this bad though.

I think it's permanently stained. It happens with old sinks.
It's cast iron with an enamel coating. That's just what happens as the enamel gets old and scrubbed away and the black cast iron is uncovered.

As someone who owns an entire knife set I switch between while cooking and an extra "special knife" I have as my favorite. The claim and picture above physically hurts me more than when I discovered the importance of curling my fingers while speed chopping.

Not OP, but I have to admit my sink looks this. It is OLD Corian and has been scratched and stained before we ever lived in the house. No amount of cleaning or abrasives will get it clean. I cannot wait to replace it.

I rented a house that had a Corian sink and counters. That sink was supposed to be ivory colored but was always just filth colored. Bleach did nothing, Comet powder did a little more than nothing, Barkeepers Friend probably did the best, but it was never really what I would call clean.
I had a feeling that the landlord was going to try and claim that the sink was dirty and keep some money back. So I got a pad sander and just sanded that bastard clean. I didn't have to take much off before it looked nice again. Used a fine grit to make it nice and smooth again and then hit it with a coat of Turtle Wax before we left. Looked brand new. Probably stayed that way for all of five minutes. I could have used a polyurethane clear gloss to finish it, but I didn't care enough.
Those Corian sinks are garbage but since they're typically undermounted (glued) to a corian countertop, they're a pain in the ass to replace since you'd have to cut them out.
Yeah, I think stainless steel saves lazy fuckers like me. It always looks clean, even with just a wipe.
Soft Scrub with bleach always helped my mom’s 100-year-old farmhouse sink that stained like this. Made it white again. It always started to stain again after but it did help lift the stains from the porcelain for weeks at a time. Squirt it on and spread it around the sink, let it sit and come back to rinse away after. All white again.
I was just gonna say that. I have 2 total 100 year old farmhouse sinks and I got them both white after softscrub ("industrial bleach"). Same with 1 tub that's 100ish.
Edited to say - the previous owner said "the sinks and tub will never be white again" challenge accepted.

For a real answer it looks like an older enamel sink. They wear easy and take some really hard deep scrubbing to get shiny looking again.

Once the enamel has worn down and become porous, they will stain again incredibly quickly. My sink looked like this 2 weeks after cleaning and bleaching just from pouring coffee down the drain and washing plates.
Yeah you have to recoat it. Everyone here was commenting on how nasty it looks but they don't realize older sinks will look like this.

Not a kitchen sink you're expected to wash dishes in. I consider myself pretty relaxed when it comes to the bar of an acceptable kitchen but how are you not cleaning it when you do the dishes? Isn't the kitchen sink just a large fixed dish you wash your hands and dishes in and as such should be cleaned after dishes are done? Idk maybe I'm more pedantic than I thought but I'd be mortified by this in my own house

Ceramic coated steel is a middle ground, but they get easily damaged and start corroding.

Yeah that ceramic coating gets compromised quick when you’re rubbing glass and ceramic bowls, cups, plates, etc in there.
Steel sinks are best. They wear down too but what’s underneath? Just more steel fam. You just they abrasion lines on your sink over time vs ceramic where you’ve exposed the inner porous material that isn’t glazed over. You get chips, cracks, etc.
Making pasta and dumping the hot water into them is probably the quickest way I've seen them ruined. Almost none of them can handle it well. The folks who like those style sinks act all incredulous as if this isn't the way almost everyone handles dumping out hot water and act like you're the strange one you don't dump it into a stock pot to let it cool down first.

I would give up my firstborn for a seamless stainless sink/counter combo with the sink welded and polished down flush. I even want the industrial hose hanging down instead of a faucet to clean around.

In Philly, I lived in a house from the 1930s with a vintage sink. It was classic and valuable in its own right and just needed Comet, bleach, a scrunge pad, and some elbow grease.
One of the most satisfying experiences of my life was cleaning up the original ceramic in that house.

I did this to my bathtub when my family moved into our current house. Not sure what the previous homeowners did but it was BAD! Didn't have to scrub very hard. Baking Soda is fucking magical imo.

I had a knife in college that was from my grandfather, it was a 100+ year old chefs knife that probably started as a full size but was about this big after decades of wear and being sharpened. It was so sharp you could shave with it and was actually great in the kitchen, although it was a real knife, not a serrated shit knife like this. I lost it when I moved and got a nice Santoku knife, highly recommend buying a quality knife.
