Neighbor drops a/c on my car while I’m away on vacation
Luckily, someone’s home to take care of it. But I was told they could only partially cover it. Thing is, I don’t get back for another two days.
Go through insurance. Or small claims court.
thanks. I’m considering Insurance first. If no one follows up and they end up saying it’s my fault (when it’s clearly not) then i’ll go to small claims court. i just want to hold my neighbor responsible especially since i saw on camera she reacted so irresponsibly after the a/c fell
Post the vid
The video footage we have is from after the a/c fell. Unfortunately. The a/c falling wasn’t enough to trigger the motion detector on our Ring camera.
They have a knack for missing the action. If an arlo was pointed at the World Series it would trigger when the last person from the cleanup crew is closing the gate to leave the stadium.
is it because the arlo doesn't capture action or because baseball doesn't have any action?
I was really hoping someone would say this. It could surely be the latter
I'm a really big baseball fan and I'm quite unhappy with how accurate this comment is
Baseball has action?
What did she do
What did she do or not do?
Our surveillance cam reports every buzzing fly and their sister in law. :/
Mine likes to tell me that spider webs are people in my backyard, at 3AM.
If you have a comprehensive policy, call your insurance first. That is easily $2k + fix
Much, much more. I used to do mechanical claims and the frame alone on some vehicles was 2000 easy. Labor was 10ish hours at 200. Glass is probably another 1k. That's assuming there isn't shade damage. $300. Paint or body damage. If it's got to be reskinned you're looking at 10k easy.
Oh for sure… just throwing a number out there, but long story short it’ll far surpass any deductible. I was a licensed APD appraiser for a while so I know the deal.
How can it be your fault if you were literally NOT physically there.
i like to think insurance companies cut corners. they might tell me it was my fault for parking in my own driveway. if i parked somewhere else, it wouldnt happen 🫠
Can report to the state insurance board
Aha, someone who has had to wrassle with insurance before!
How can it be your fault if you were literally NOT physically there.
have you ever dealt with an insurance company? Their entire business model is predicated on discovering ways to not pay out on policy.
thanks. I’m considering Insurance first. If no one follows up and they end up saying it’s my fault (when it’s clearly not) then i’ll go to small claims court. i just want to hold my neighbor responsible especially since i saw on camera she reacted so irresponsibly after the a/c fell
There's no way the insurance company would claim you were negligent for parking in a driveway, and fault doesn't really matter for you being paid/car fixed if you have coverage, in this case comprehensive. Make sure to let them know what happened as soon as reasonable, and then forget about it until you're home.
If you don't have coverage, well, just enjoy your vacation.
Do they have home or renters insurance? Go through that. If not, take them to court. This isn't a time to be nice. They fucked up and should pay for it. Your car should be able to stay relatively safe from a fucking AC unit falling into the roof. And it's more than the glass that's been damaged. You'll need new tracks, headliner, and the center headliner console parts where they have the map lights and other parts.
What? They're gonna blame you for getting in the way of their ac falling? Shouldn't have parked the car there? Make sure police is involved, file that report. Call your insurance too.
This was actually taken in our driveway. Landlord owns the house. We’re renting the first floor and the driveway. Neighbor that dropped a/c lives on the second floor and well aware that we’ve always parked our cars in the driveway. I’m guessing it might be an installation gone wrong but seriously could’ve been prevented with proper attention. Nasty neighbor was just laughing it off while talking to person at home, saw her on camera smiling like a maniac. Police was called more than several hours ago. No updates yet but afaik they haven’t showed up yet either.
You could tell from the photo it's not installed properly. Anything over the first floor should have a support beam at the bottom to prevent this exact thing.
All air conditioning units are supposed to be supported correctly. If there is not a large enough window sill to have a brick or something supporting the ac you must have a support bracket installed. They cost like 100 bucks with installation and are permanently attached bit the ac can be removed. Landlord should have had the tenant install one if they planned on using window unit. This for sure is going to small.claims court.
Heck, even on the first floor use one. You can get one for $20-$30 that will cover a smaller unit like the one in the picture.
Terrible
have you considered she‘s panicking? like seriously, I would be so distraught if I fucked up like this
Hope they realize theres no way they wont be paying for the entire thing.
the partly cover it bit was in reference to the rain getting in
But yeah, this is completely the neighbor's fault.
How the F did you get to "they're gonna blame you for getting in the way?!" from what that comment says?
Make them go buy a tarp and cover it
Or tell them be prepared for a cleaning bill for the inside too
Just have it towed to a body shop. Tell your adjuster to go there for the rest. You are mitigating damages as best you can (rain).
Renters insurance, landlords insurance for the property?
how is that mildly infuriating that mf broke your car
Well I was partly enjoying my day. being on vacation and all. I was actually halfway through a good cheeseburger when I suddenly received a call about it.
Fuck it, it’s not going anywhere. Order another burger and a beer
Let tomorrow worry about tomorrow
Don't you worry about "blank". Let me worry about "blank".
Ohh no i forgot about my........ boneitis.....
That sounds pretty serious. Hope it doesn't leave you ripped to shreds.
To shreds you say?
How's his family?
My only regret....
Thank you for a very harty laugh! Good day to you and hope the rest gose even better!
Good day to you as well 🫠 the bonitis episode is my favorite lol
Is that I have…
boneitis
Can I interest OP in some sham-pagan?
Or maybe some jampagne?
I had no idea you were such a coin-a-sewer.
I think you meant "blank", "blank" you're not looking at the big picture
don't you worry about planet express, let me worry about blank.
Blank? Blank?! You're not looking at the big picture!
Blank? Blank!? You're not looking at the big picture!!
Oh I'm going to use this one in the future.
As for OP, as long as they're going to cover getting it fixed, enjoy your time away.
This reminds me of my dad so much, he put one in his bedroom window on the top floor and the neighbours car was always right below. He was the kind of person that would say "fuck it I'll deal with it when it's a problem". I pleaded with the neighbour to park a bit further back because I was concerned.
Sure enough, they moved the car and 2 days later it fell out of the window and landed right where the car would have been.
Oh tomorrow, I love tomorrow. Tomorrow me will know what to do lol.
Tomorrow flossthief can always handle it
I hate that guy
I would ring friends in the area to see if anybody can at least put something over it to stop water intrusion.
Yeah I wouldnt just leave that, broken sun roof means water will get in, and in a very short amount of time you can get mold, which is a pain to get out of cars. It can also be difficult to dry if water pools, as most cars don't have drainage plugs, and then you risk damage to actual interior items.
now that I am retired, I live my whole life by this rule.
I’m only 31 but this has been my motto since I was like 15. There’s always tomorrow to worry about today can’t spend today worrying about today.
That is not going to buff out. Have it towed to a body shop and let them get started while you’re away.
I'm fact tell the neighbor he's paying for the beer
As shitty as the event is, I appreciate your response to it. I also appreciate that your neighbor didn’t simply pretend nothing happened and you found out when you got home with absolutely 0 context.
thanks but i’m not home yet lol. i kinda wish i found out later on instead, with zero context after i get back from vacay.
Last year I lived out of a suitcase for 10 weeks while my dad was in the hospital with acute myeloid leukemia. I went down to spend time with him because I knew that he had a 90% likelihood of dying within 12 weeks.
He died after 10 weeks.
My wife came down to visit while things were evidently dire to say her goodbyes. As she was getting ready to leave for the airport, some delivery truck backed into the brick wall in front of our house and knocked over a section of it and then drove off.
She didn’t tell me, she thought I had enough on my mind.
I came home two weeks later, she picked me up from the airport, and as we were about to get home she said “I want to give you a heads up about something that might make you angry…”
Needless to say, I was upset about it because I thought about how much money it would cost me on top of the time I took off and the expenses of living away. But in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter.
I wish she would have told me in advance, just so it wasn’t insult to injury, but I understand why she didn’t, there was no good solution. When things are outside of your control, knowing about the problem doesn’t help in solving it. But knowing that a person who made a mistake owns up to it is much better in my opinion.
So perhaps the silver lining is that your dumbass neighbor did the right thing and you didn’t come home to a surprise, but I see why learning about it while away can create a lot of stress.
I’m so sorry to hear all of that. I hope you’ve found peace now
At least they had the decency to call you, you could have come home to this shit
Yeah when I saw one of the pics was from his security camera I assumed the worst.
a good cheeseburger will really stave off any external feelings or ailments like nothing else.
OP - IMPORTANT - make sure they cover it up for you in case it rains. Having to deal with water damage and mold is going to be 100x worse than replacing the glass
I think their point is that this is not mildly infuriating; this is extremely infuriating.
This is the way to live life.
Finish that burger and worry about the problem later.
It ain't gonna be fixed until you can give attention to it, and you can choose when to do that.
It's mildly infuriating to you because you're mildly upset that OP should be more infuriated. You should make your own post here.
Hey let them feel extremely infuriated about OP only being mildly infuriated. Lol.
Mildly has been stretched and abused so many times here.
I’d imagine it was an accident
because it is an accident, it can be fixed and they will have insurance and many things. If that is not mildly or lightly infuriating then I hope you find some peace in your life
It’s mildly infuriating if the neighbor accepts responsibility and quickly makes good. It’s very infuriating otherwise.
Wrong subreddit. Definitely not just mildly infuriating.
I think, to a sane person who understands that mistakes happen, this is mildly infuriating. Window AC’s fall all the time, haven’t you seen Happy Gilmore?
"I think I might have just killed the meesta meesta lady"
wild to me to see how many people are immediately basically calling for the person's head, as if accidents never happen lmao.
Or, OP is a pretty chill dude
Being mad is really OP’s problem at this point.
Accidents happen and being infuriated past a minute or two really ruins the day for no reason.
Now if it was intentional… different story.
Nah this is the right subreddit. No one posts anything mildly infuriating anymore. Now THAT is mildly infuriating
So I was updated about half an hour ago. This is the inside of the car. Apparently it’s raining outside. Sucks. But yk what, I’ll get through this.
You can kinda see the glass shards being held up by the moonroof fabric. But since it’s only fabric covering the top(not sure what else is partially covering it), water will definitely pour into the car. When it rains, it really pours 🙂↕️
Damn it hit the car so hard that the overhead panel popped out?
Not really surprised tbh
You ever lift one of those things? They are like 50-100 pounds (depending on size) of raw metals
Falling from a second story window it's got a ton of energy and very little force distribution, so all of that force is on whatever leading edge the AC strikes. Huge energy in one spot
Overhead panel is held in by a few plastic clips
I just installed one 3 days ago. It’s f*ing terrifying every year.
Tell them to put a tarp over the roof. Any hardware store should have those.
you HAVE to fuck this dude wife now only option
That is a truly offensive thing to say but it made me laugh so I upvoted
If it’s raining and didn’t get well covered right away, you’ll have to worry about water damage and mold/mildew in the overhead. That could require pulling down the interior to get it dried out properly. More costs, all of which they should pay for. If they don’t have insurance, you may have to go through yours and have them go after the tenants.
Dude have them go buy a friggin tarp and cover the WHOLE roof of the car. A cheap garbage bag isn't gonna cut it.
Definitely put trashbags over it, and duct tape. Itll help seal it enought atleast
What kind of car is that?
2021 Nissan Rogue
safe to say it is now 2024 Nissan Brogue
Love your sense of humor in the face of calamity.
of course! always face adversity with a smile!
Oh, hey car twinsie. I will now be acutely aware of parking under AC units (but on the real, I'm sorry this happened. You seem to be taking it in stride but still a shitty thing to happen)
It looks like their window is broken too.
yea it’s on the landlord. so we involved em. not sure whose window it is since i’m not home.
If it's the landlords fault, then why are you making it seem like your neighbor dropped it (on purpose). And if it's on your landlord, why does your neighbor have to cover a portion?
pardon my vagueness. we have someone left at home, my sister. we asked her to try and cover it but she had trouble covering it completely. but she could not reach the top of the car completely. neighbor didnt actually do anything, they just tried to laugh it off with my sister and kept saying sorry. it’s not the landlord’s fault at all. i’m saying it’s definitely the neighbor’s fault but she damaged both my property and the landlord’s. so she didn’t just damage my car but actually damaged the landlord’s window (regardless if it’s on my floor or the neighbor who rents upstairs) since we’re all just renters. so i thought the landlord should know and try to back me up if anything.
Love that the neighbour is laughing and it was caught on camera.. because that wont be your neighbour for long..
That makes more sense. I was really confused reading your answers.
Mildly?
OP is a millionaire, this mildly inconvenienced him at best.
This is some Seinfeld level mild infuriation
It’s a commando 8!
Didn’t kramer get hit in the head with an air conditioner?
Let insurance handle it. They'll go after her to recoup the money they give you to pay for it. Hell, check if your/their renters insurance would cover it.
“You know that mista mista lady? I think I just killed her”
You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut the hell up.
Happy Gilmore for the unaware
It’ll still be broken when you get home try to enjoy what’s left of your vacation
Don't wait to call the insurance.
Most of the stuff here is really infuriating
Involve police and insurance...or pay for it yourself. That "partially cover it" is bullshit. Seems they're also liable for damage to your car while you're away, or the cost of cutting your trip short. You could really push this if they want to get cheap.
Shit happens, now make it right, neighbor.
When they said ‘partially cover it’ they meant from the rain…
average redditor reading comprehension
At least it didn’t fall on you or someone else.
This is true
The fact you chose mildly infuriating to post this in is killing me rn. Your nonchalant approach to the issue is both endearing and fucking hilarious
The ac looks okay 👌
you think so? 🤔
What made it fall anyways?
Someone who doesn’t know how to install one properly most likely.
Yeah but shit. NYC is basically full of bootleg AC installs and we barely hear about the deaths
That’s why they require brackets but even then, they can be quite dodgy. You’re allowed to do it yourself.
Window A/C units are heavier than people think, unbalanced and super awkward if you don't know what you're doing, and/or try it by yourself on a whim.
That’s true they are very heavy and balanced in a weird way. It’s easy to lose your grip. For some reason people think they sit in further than they actually do sometimes.
definitely this
im assuming you've never installed one of those. they basically just sit on the window/ledge. the blinders on the sides are floppy plastic just to block air, they dont load-bear at all. set that sucker too far on the ledge and out it goes
Gravity.
Not cool
Is your car a mildly disturbed and remarkably fickle professor of moral philosophy?
What's the end result here? Did they offer to pay for it, or is there an upcoming fight in your future?
Edit: Just saw your below comments. Like Hell they're only paying for half of it. And how is that going to work with insurance? Isn't there some type of deductible that comes out first?
Your neighbor should pay for it. Give them the ultimatum. You can pay for it or you can meet me in court. You know if it was the other way around, they would be tearing your @$$ apart. Don't let this stand.
Might be some form of fight. Frankly, I’d want it to unfold that way. It would be more cathartic for me. The neighbors did kinda surrender tho. Neighbor’s husband is willing to come w me to take my car to the shop. Most likely to get a concrete figure with an actual quote and estimate from the shop. But I’m gonna pin everything else needed out of pocket on him. yk stuff like car rental, loss of income, etc.
Definitely. Did you find out how the Hell this even happened in the first place? I have window AC units as well, and never EVER had one fall out the window.
I’m dying to find out about that too! What on earth was she doing?? I will have to speak to her and ask when I come back home. Either she was cleaning it or she fucked up the installation. She should’ve paid a professional to install it for her or clean it. At least the professional would’ve had insurance to cover his ass if this ended up happening regardless.
Badass. Now throw the ac on their car
that’s the plan! kidding
As an update for tonight. It rained hard apparently. Car’s def soaked inside. The A/C still there!!! We can’t really move it, it’s heavy. But seriously zero effort on the neighbor’s end to remedy this. My neighbor also has trouble with English so in an attempt to resolve things with them, we have to relay everything through her husband. Her husband hasn’t even seen or visited my car. Tbh, I never see him home. It shocked me cuz I never even expected my neighbor to be married. Anyway, I straight up demanded a fixed amount of cash over text, so we can both move on without any hassles like court claims, insurance, and lawyers. I know it’s a dick move but I kinda have to be a dick about it now. Husband went wtf why am I asking for that much money. Bear in mind, I am taking everything into account with that figure I gave em. Car rental, left the scene, negligence, won’t be able to go to work right away, etc. I have a mighty good feeling the neighbor will not pay X amount of dollars to me. So I will definitely take action and claim comprehensive w insurance company. Tell them it was neighbor’s fault. Also what the hell, cops still haven’t shown up apparently. This is unexpected behavior from them. Even though they usually arrive late, they usually arrive the same day when we call.
On another note, I’m having a great time right now eating sushi for dinner. So I’ll deal with this when I deal with this.
I would not be mildly infuriated at the slightest….
That’s highly intensively infuriating
GOD DAMN!! He needs to drop a fat check to make that right.
Cool story. (Sorry, couldn’t resist).
It is a shame the a.c dropper or the landlord or neighbor has not done anything to cover the hole : heavy cardboard or a square of plywood, ducktape, plastic, and more tape.
Tow to shop and pay them to cover hole.
I saw in the comments OP that there's nothing to cover the broken roof. Can the person at home get an umbrella? Open it, pop it in the hole and if there's going to be wind use a belt to tie the umbrella handle to something in the car.
It's not ideal but will work in a pinch.
Mary Poppins- car style lol
I know that's easier said than done but... Like sue him.
What are you doing? They have no choice to afford it. File a claim with your insurance and file a police report. Your insurance will handle it.
Did he atleast tarp the car?
I see you broke his window back in retaliation, good move.
It’s such a mild inconvenience it’s not even worth noting
mildly my ass, id be big pissed.
make sure to charge them for the detailing, too. all that weather is gonna cause mold
Send pictures to your insurance and file a claim.
I feel like mildly infuriating is an understatement here...
One of my biggest fears is a window unit falling out of the window and hitting someone or something I can't afford to pay for. Smh! Should be a law against window units on any apartment over 2 stories that they can buy a portable AC unit and still keep it cool without the danger of not installing right.
How to turn a $50 A/C into a $3,000 A/C
My mother did this to my ac when I was a kid from the second story. Damn thing still worked fine for years after too!
I wish we could see their face after it fell 😂
According to OP the person that dropped the AC laughed maniacally about it and did nothing to try and resolve the problem
That's not cool.
Who tf installed that AC unit with 4 sticks ?!?
This happened to a friend of mine in Brooklyn. He was installing a new unit, it fell out and took out ANOTHER ac unit below his before crashing all the backyard.
That dingus ended up having to buy 4 total AC units after his fuckup. Luckily no one was injured.
Mister, mister!!!
This is a lot more than mildly infuriating.
Just curious cuz ur on vacation so who took the pics? Would be a completely different situation if ur neighbor sent these pics to you to let u know they screwed up. Guessing u live w fam and they took the pics? Also, did the neighbor just leave the a/c on the car? 🤣
sister at home took pics. yea, i’d he scared straight if my neighbor magically found my number and sent me these. it’d be a death threat or something. update on the a/c is yes, still on top of car
Well isn’t that just…danby
How neighbourly of them to do so. Consider them to be good neighbours. Something, something /s
I'm surprised that tape job didn't hold it in place
Living on the second floor, this was my worst fear installing my AC this year.
This sub and people who don't know what the word "mildly" means: Name a more iconic duo
In the hood that’s called airmail
Legit was always one of my fears I was on a 2nd floor apartment. Luckily above am alleyway so it really wouldn't matter but kids hangout there sometomes..I was like my luck I'll be caved up and cozy in the NY humid summer. And bam. My ac just falls out.
That’s not cool
Shattered sun roofs are the worst. I had to tape a garbage bag to the top of my car for weeks until the dealer could get a new one and replace it... which was like $2-3k. Never stopped finding shards of sun roof in my car afterward, even after it was cleaned by the dealer.
That's not cool
I hope you remained cool about it.
That looks like a newer Volvo —- I’m so sorry my dude
Lol
What part of this is mildly? Bro must be ghandi if this is mild
Did he even cover the top when you were gone so no rain would get in?
