“Pelenalty”
Are you Chris Waddle?
It’s annoyed me how nobody else acknowledged this. Very very good sir.
Funny thing: in my region in egypt we call it pelenty/pelanty as play of words
For sure. He’s not Pele, tho
No, he's Cristiano Ronaldo.
Yes, and you're Jew Jiutsu
Yes, and you're mrbendover69
He’s better you are right
Oh boy here we go
This sir, is a username I can get behind
WheelyStupid1994
Imagine Pele getting on the way that egoistical man baby Ronaldo got on last night.
Crying like a total idiot jesus. Me me me me me me me me x 15mn
Whether or not you like Ronaldo, you must admit he’s contributed a lot to football. A professional institution doing this childish joke just isn’t a good look is it?
It's very Sky Sports-y, was weird seeing it from the bbc
This sort of joke caption is very common on match of the day...
I was about to say, MOTD has done this for literal decades and nobody bats an eye. Make like Ronaldo and touch some grass, people. And that includes you, JT.
How many players of the stature of Ronaldo have they done it to “for decades”? Everyone deserves respect, but some people deserve a little more, if only for the illustrious career and massive contribution to their profession.
People need to chill out. Football is entertainment, the players are paid millions, they should be able to take a lighthearted joke like this. Let’s enjoy life and have some fun shall we?
BBC is just that older Celebrity on Instagram that is trying to stay relevant by posting memes that they think will get them likes but it misses the mark and they end up showing their age.
Maybe an "edgy" show like 'Saturday Social" but you'd never see this one main match broadcast. Their puns tend to be gentle and twee ('toffees come unstuck' etc)
You're definitely right, I just meant face value in terms of using puns
r/soccercirclejerk has infiltrated the BBC
Professionalism has been on a slow death since 2016.
As an American who watched an orange windbag take office coming off any election where he publicly and proudly showed how morally objectionable he is that year. So I feel like professionalism was well dead and buried and we (Americans) were dancing on its grave that year.
When you have co-commentators that say “innit” as their proper use of English this is ultimately what you get.
One of the most disgraceful things about sports is how bullying is poorly camouflaged as "banter".
Banter is something you do between friends. You can shout and be emotional at the stadium, but broadcasting garbage like this, writing hateful messages on twitter or other social media etc is plain as day bullying. These players have families and a life outside of football. Just because they are rich, successful and public people doesnt mean anyone should have the right to mistreat them.
That can happen but I really wouldn't class this as bullying in any way whatsoever. It's a small, silly joke about missing a penalty, it isn't even approaching bullying. Lineker makes stupid puns out of peoples names all the time on MOTD.
Insane that you have taken it this far. There are puns in the corner of every episode of MOTD when they roll the highlights, this is no different. I feel like I've gone mad reading this thread. Bullying... dios mio ✝️
People need to chill out. Football is entertainment, the players are paid millions, they should be able to take a lighthearted joke like this. Saying missdiano penaldo is not bullying/mistreating in any way whatsoever, and it’s not exactly garbage is it. Let’s enjoy life and have some fun shall we?
good lord this comment is pathetic

I had to double check because I could have thought I missed read that at first
I heard that most of the Georgia players were in a camp that he opened years ago.
English media just salty he exposed one of the biggest English clubs.
It’s not even clever, it’s like something a 12 year old would say.
And as such it's a silly joke which people are taking way too seriously. He's just a footballer for goodness sake.
It’s Twitter trolling bullshit. Is that the level now?
Sure, it's not very funny, but all this pearl clutching about a crap joke is ridiculous.
It’ll be forgotten about tomorrow I’d imagine.
That’s why it’s funny seeing it come from the BBC. It’s so childish it’s actually quite funny. Not belly laugh funny, more like exhale through your nose funny.
Yeah it’s tinpot
It was weird though, going between that sort of thing and Lineker bending over backwards to glaze him over what anyone would say was a poor performance. Why can't they just be normal lol
I’ve been a Messi fan all my life but this is outrageous and extremely disrespectful. Cristiano’s contribution to the football world has been nothing short of remarkable and arguably something we’ll never see again. This is just really poor and disappointing from the BBC. Probably made by some punk who can’t even touch his toes or see willy when he urinates.
What does Messi have to do with this...?
their rivalry means that many put themselves into camps of one or the other as opposed to just appreciating good football, it's quite adolescent imo
Its honestly one of the most annoying aspects of modern football for me. People supporting an individual and therefore wanting whatever team he plays for to win. But the worst part is the bias that most of these fanboys have.
I saw a very popular tweet from a Ronaldo fanboy saying if Messi had missed that penalty that Ronaldo missed he’d have retired there and then and wouldn’t even have taken a penalty in the shootout. Like Ronaldo has literally just missed a penalty, Messi is completely and utterly irrelevant to that, and he’s getting criticised for something no one can prove and is just simply untrue.
Its pathetic.
You have to pick a side and commit to it
...if you have the mental age of a toddler.
He missed a penalty. Not disrespecting what is put into football. Just relax about it, it’s British humour. If you don’t understand it, just scroll along.
being a 'messi fan' (or a 'ronaldo fan') means you know nothing about football. Fuck off.
Faux outrage #3747302
You do know that his contribution is the same. Joke or not. Wright?
He also contributed a lot of money to the bank account of that woman he met in Vegas...
Legal expert
Sounds like easy money
Any upset by this needs their heads checking.
They better keep their jokes to uk then. If they want international viewers to watch better listen to global mood.
It's not from an international show so not sure what your issue is then.
And there's no global mood around this, just a bunch of fragile Ronaldo fans who clearly don't have much going on in their lives.
They always do cheesy puns like this on MOTD. People here either aren't from the UK or need to get a grip.
I feel like I am going insane on this sub... acting like Gary Lineker ran on the pitch and dropkicked him.
You guys need to get a grip and pull your head out of Ronaldo's arse.
Everybody chasing that karma, Fam.
Glad someone said it, I thought it was just mildly funny. If Cristiano Ronaldo, quite possibly the most famous man in the world and definitely the biggest footballer, needs defending then something has gone seriously wrong.
there's no way you thought that's funny unless you're literally 8 years old kid
You got me, well done, I am a very very precocious 8-year-old on Reddit, nice one
that was already evident, you didn't need to comment again
Lot of people on this sub would let Ronaldo shag their sister for the clout
The guy's a selfish prick. No sympathy for him

They definitely are still mad, the commentators are always biased af whenever Portugal plays. Had a good laugh this game at Martin Keown complaining about how the foul on Jota wasn't a pen and then instantly backpedalling when Ronaldo failed to convert. You know if he'd scored he'd be moaning about it not being a pen for the rest of the game.

You’re welcome to your opinion but calling Ian Darke “some dumb British guy” is definitely something.
I'd fucking love it.
Blimey, you are a bit dramatic. Also do you really think we would lose our minds over another country mocking Kane missing a penalty?
The irony of calling English people crybabies then taking such offence to a short joke. Fuck me it’s immature but it’s really not that deep
I get your point but i doubt wed lose our minds

You support an english team you tit
I mean they cheated In the wc and the biased ref ruined one of the euros so no we won’t respect him, the cheating c**t
John Terry needs to chill.
It's a silly pun, of the kind they do every week.
This seems very unprofessional from such a big sports and news channel, this is something I would expect from a parody channel or something not from the largest channel in the UK.
Diddums
It is a disgrace.
Not every situation calls for a joke.
Lol, a disgrace. Coooome on, you're like a Daily Mail comment section.
A disgrace? Lmao, that's soft as fuck. It's a harmless joke, Lineker makes stupid puns out of peoples names all the time on MOTD. It's not that serious.
It’s not like someone died lmao, a joke is perfectly fine here
It’s embarrassing because it’s immature for a network that really markets themselves as far more serious. Not because it’s “a disgrace”
It's not embarrassing at all. People getting so triggered by it is the embarrassing part.
The BBC is a huge entity with many different departments and the Sports parts have never been taken as seriously as the news for instance and actually has a long held tradition of joking round, especially the football.
They're always bantering Micah Richards for example or Lineker is making his silly puns. The purpose of showing the sport is entertainment and supposed to be light overall.
Somewhat agree. I did find it a bit too low-effort, but absolutely agree that the weird fucks in this thread are far more embarrassing
Seriously, they’re reacting like someone made a joke about a death or something. Also got slightly brigaded by Ronaldo fans. Maybe one day these people grow up
I mean where’s the joke here?
He missed and they made a joke out of it with his name,, it's pretty route 1.
I thought it was pretty funny. Everyone has different sense of humor.. you/many chose to get offended by it.. and many others didn't
I mean, you know the joke. You just don’t find it funny
Which is expected, it’s very low effort. But people don’t need to go batshit about a bad joke about a famous player. They didn’t cross any line, it’s just the wrong network to do it
Reading the comments you’d think they made fun of something much more serious than a penalty miss
Was it funny???
No but that doesn't make it a disgrace either
BBC sports isn't a meme page to do this.
Clearly you don’t watch BBC Sports regularly then, because they do this type of thing all the time.
This is childish, this is the sort of things a 14yo says
Not as much of a disgrace as being a rapist imo
Does no one in here watch MOTD or what is going on here honestly? JT is such a weirdo in general.
Yeah this is normal for MOTD. Think it's just the Ronaldo fanboys having a paddy
Funny innit.
jesus lighten up people, it’s a joke, they do it on like every ever match of the day
crawl out of ronaldo’s arse and get some perspective
I personally think it's funny and it was fucking hilarious when one of the greatest players of all time cried in the middle of a game.
Tell you what’s a disgrace John, your wanky NFT scam.
For a centre back, JT really has a thin skin there. Also, this Chelsea sub has fan too many Ronaldo fanboys.
Lot of right wing High Performance types who tend to idolise people like Ronaldo
The source material was definitely the Reddit match thread
S’pose he would know, having missed a high pressure penalty himself
Bloody hell get a grip
He’s spent his whole career at the top being one of the goat and that’s fine he’s incredibly talented, he also missed all game long and that’s fine wasn’t his day, they won anyway.
it’s a joke on an entertainment show please touch some grass.
I’ve been saying this for awhile now
Mainstream media gets off at this Messi vs Ronaldo debate. It’s the perfect antagonist vs protagonist that sells the same way it does in movies and TV shows.
Messi the good guy, the “undisputed goat”, the sweet humble “he can do no wrong” and Ronaldo is the “pen merchant”, arrogant, asshole, old head that needs to give up and retire.
Totally agree it’s like Fedal/ Federer vs Djokovic - one is graceful and the other always lives in his shadows, I love both but Roger has done some immature things before too. That debate is less strong these days because Djokovic has 24 GS and Federer is at 20 (Nadal 22) so aside from the gold medal the debate is pretty much over.
Messi was abused by media for years for his failures with the national team, Ronaldo was praised for “doing something Messi will never be able to” by winning an international trophy, but I guess you were too young to watch football back then.
Messi will never win euros tho.
What you just said literally proved my point
It's really not about that tbh
It absolutely is
There is zero logical reason as to why one of them has to be the bad guy and the other one has to be the good guy. Personality-wise they really aren’t even as different as the world makes it to be
They are the two greatest players of all time, it’s simple as that.
I mean Ronaldo really should retire from the NT at this point, he’s finished
Should have gone for "Rapist misses penalty"
No one could complain about that
Tbh I was fed up of hearing ‘the Ronaldo show’. At HT the analysis was all about Ronaldo and his ‘incredible’ movement, with little mention of repeatedly missing the ball or blazing free kicks over. The stat that he’d scored 1 out 58 free kicks at major tournaments amazed me.
Then at the end of the shootout, camera was straight on Ronaldo even though costa had pretty much single handedly won them the game.
He deserves it but people are crying
Haha. I'm happy to pay for the licence fee just for that.
Embarrassing.
He's a cry 😢 baby. Boo hoo.
He's a terrible person so I don't care
Cristiano Ronaldo has always been one of the most disrespected GOAT's of all time.
Messi and Cristiano are miles ahead of anyone ever in football (yeah including Maradona & Pele), but the constant disrespect he gets from "journalists" is sickening. But it's obvious why. He's a uber-successful, uber-driven athlete who looks like he could be a model & this gets on the nerves of many people with low self-esteem.
Big pick me vibes for a rapist
Never thought I'd back John Terry's integrity
Listen.. it's hilarious (in a certain place time and setting) but for a national service funded by taxpayers to drop standards and treat a legend like this during what could of potentially been his last match and tournament is actually disgraceful. Mocking someone who has elevated the sport for our generation when he is at his lowest moment actually takes the piss when coming from a corporation supposedly prides itself on integrity and high standards. I'm not even a CR7 fan but I respect his determination and passion, he doesnt deserve to sign out whilst being mocked
grow up you banana
He's bang on. This hate train that Ronaldo has lately is absolutely pathetic.
The man is the second greatest player to ever play the game and people act like he's Bendtner or Ballotelli
Quite easy to hate a rapist
He’s below Pele, Maradona, Messi and possibly fat Ronaldo. Top 5 I’ll give you that
i probably disagree but doesn't really matter because none of those other players are as disrespected as him
Ronaldino, Jarzino (sp), Gullit, definitely fat Ronaldo.
He is an amazing athlete though (wonder how he does that at his age?)
No he isn't. He's behind only Messi.
Messi isn't Maradona.
I left soccer circle Jack after World Cup 2022. It’s been nothing but disgrace since. Ronaldo only mistake is going back to Man united when he did.
Lmao r/soccercirclejerk never had standards don’t kid yourself
Tv journalists proving they are no better than twitter nobodies
a lot of fans hate ronaldo like he personally did something to them.

Just remember this when people think the BBC is impartial in politics too
Come on now, some shit kicker running the chyrons on a live sporting match should absolutely know better, but let's not equate that with political reportage. BBC is absolutely about as impartial as it's possible to be.
And this shows it cannot be trusted at all.
This is lunacy logic.
BBC made a lot of tasteless jokes on Ronaldo's expense today, it was absolutely unprofessional.
Lol, he's not a fucking god.
He sure thinks he’s a gift from one
He isn't but this is still ridiculous.
Their journalistic integrity went down the drain a long, long time ago.
I wished BBC would be decent in sports reporting atleast, but alas, they were successful in disappointing everyone by being the garbage they are. Pathetic.
I’ll be very honest, I have never liked Ronaldo. Not since his Man Utd days. But he deserves better than this
The same John Terry who has never lifted an international trophy
The BBC have long passed being a reputable media outlet.
Doing this to any football player is a disgrace
JT always a bit daft hasn't he?
There is no way this was approved by higher ups, right? This looks like some dude making a joke, now that dude needs to find a new job because this is just horrendous.
BBC is trash.
Absolute disrespect and lack of professionalism from the British bullshit cunts.
Sycophant
Yeah, well, that's just like your opinion, man.
I admit I don't like Ronaldo, he is narcissistic and a hypocrite. But that is low from bbc, I expect that kind of thing from Instagram and Twitter trolls rather than a large organisation like the BBC.
No class.
Think being a rapist is less classy tbh
Euro24 Final England 0-1 Portugal
93' Penaldo
ohhhhhh written in the stars...
JT our legend. But this is cringe.
he is right how is it cringe?
I just realized he said it was a disgrace by BBC, my bad. I thought he agreed and twitted the same thing.
It’s very childish from The BBC you would expect better surely?
Absolutely childish and cringe by BBC, i just realized JT called them out, initially I thought he was agreeing with the caption, so my bad.
He is a cringe guy. Posts inspirational quotes on his insta after winning his local golf clubs tournament
Absolutely. This is pretty low on the list of things he’s done that’s made me cringe
Y’all better be ready for when Gen Z takes over broadcasting. It’s going to be banter galore 🤣🤣🤣
Shit like "Penaldo" and "Pessi" is the most cringiest thing I've seen in football. I'm genuinely surprised that the BBC stooped to such a childish level of criticism.
They make shit puns literally every MOTD. I distinctly remember one that was like "Reality Cech" when Petr made a mistake. It's really not that deep.
i got curious cause people kept saying they did it but never really had pictures of it and decided to try find evidence of it, this was from the MOTD of man united vs Bournemouth, and would you look at that, a pun, mocking united based on their name
Lack of respect towards one off the best football players we ever saw... Compare Maradona or pele when the football was like 3 division of any country is just a joke
The media and social media full stop is the problem.
This is incredibly unprofessional as the broadcaster
No one outside UK loves brits, for thinks like that. Too Big ego for a country that doesn't know even how to cook
Is English media the worst in the world?
Literally every media outlet in the country resorts to this level of nonsense whether it is politics, geopolitics or sport.
Imagine doing that to Pele in the 70s would legitimately start riots.
