Wanted to see if there are any fantasy books that recently came out or that I have missed which are "out there." Out there can mean,
- The book is incredibly weird.
- The characters and setting are in the realm of bizarre.
- It isn't conventional fantasy. It's unique and doesn't follow the traditional formulas for fantasy.
- It might even be more in the experimental side of things.
- It's unique. It's making its own trajectory for fantasy and would be an outlier for the genre. If successful, it would lead to another sub genre.
- Has surreal humor, wacky characters.
- Something else that is difficult to categorize and makes it very different from what is well known for fantasy.
With that what do you consider to be the most out there fantasy books?
Mordew by Alex Pheby is set in a world where God is dead and the main character lives in the slums ruled by one of the wizards who killed him. It’s got plenty of grotesque and is structurally very strange as much of the plot and setting is contained in the book’s glossary which intentionally subverts the notion of spoiler.
