It’s PS2 for me. 😎
In hindsight GameCube games aged FAR better than most OG Xbox games, the PS2 by far had the largest catalogue and is the clear winner.
This sums it nicely. I was on the love it side of the Cube. Super Smash Bros. Melee forever has my love.
Same. I ended up getting it for the RE remake though. So worth it
GameCube games have aged far better than either other console. Hell, you won’t find a better game than Windwaker or Melee on either console, and certainly nothing that still gets love to this day like those do.
Absolutely! But 20 years ago, you were either a Nintendo Fanboy or laughing at Mr. Distant Third.
That’s sort of a recurring thing with Nintendo consoles once the three way console battles started… everyone would say Nintendo was for kids and miss the games they put out… then after some dust settles, they rightfully are accepted as by far the best catalogue.
For real metroid prime held up soo well, that when the remaster came out, a lot of people just assumed they uprezed it and dint redo all the textures. A little of an exaggeration yeah bit it still looks great.
From a certain perspective it's arguably the most technically impressive game from that generation. Semi-transparent reflections are still not seen often in most games today.
I think you’re doing PS2 pretty dirty
GTA 3, vice city, and San Andreas
God of war 1-2
Metal gear solid 2-3
Mutha fuckin Katamari Damacy and sequel
SSX series
Jak and Daxter
Kingdom hearts 1-2
Ratchet and clank
Most of those still hold up today, and theyre great on steam deck (early GTAs and MGS2 do feel like dogshit though)
Don't forget Persona!
Never played one! I didn’t know it was on ps2, I’ve heard that’s a pretty beloved franchise though
don’t forget god of war and sly cooper
God of war is second in my list! Sly cooper definitely kicked ass though! The ps2 had some genuinely incredible action platformers
Halo., Halo 2, Fable, KOTOR, Splinter Cell, SW: Battlefront 2.
I'm just saying... some of these are legendary classics and beloved by millions. Yes... even today. Xbox definitely was a contender. The original and 360 really put up a fight. Miss those days.
Fable is hot garbage. Splintercell was also on ps2, as was star wars battlefront which was also on gamecube.
Kotr and halo one both on pc and ran better.
I love tbe og xbox but both the other consoles were much better
I want to object... and then I remembered... why in the world am I going to engage in console wars from the 2000s? :P
I agree to disagree!
Haha i may have been to harsh on fable i got hoodwinked in to it with peter molenuxes big talk before it came out when it was still called project ego. It was fine and the second one was good and the third one was less good. But i dunno if you have a problem with the rest of what i said most of those other games came oun on the other consoles or pc.
But also ninja gaiden black came out on xbox that wouod be the one i would highlight. Incredible game. Doa3 was good to
I just took umbrage when you listed 2 games as sort of eternal when Halo is... a huge part of gaming history. Not just a single console. ALL of gaming history. Where Wind Waker is rather niche among Nintendo fans. Melee? I'm totally with you. People seem to think it was the franchise peak. Always THE Smash most point to. Still popular in tournaments to this day.
I thought about Ninja Gaiden, but the series has faded so much I'm not sure I'd call it eternal anymore. Same with DOA. Which is a shame. I certainly loved it. I don't often hear people say they're booting them up as much as Halo: CE.
I agree if you asked me at the time i probably logged more hours in to halo 1 and 2 than any game of that era. But looking back the breadth of the ps2 library is hard to deny. And for me gamecube and xbox were a toss up xbox had halo and ninjagaiden and kotor and some other great games. But gamecube had an assortment of really great weird games mixed in with also really great games. So looking back its ps2 on top and xbox and gamecube both great in different ways. Gamecube introduced re4 both the viewtiful joe games killer 7 chibi robo eternal darkness. It also had fzero gx which is one if the greatest racing games of all time. The metroid prime series. Plus windwaker and melee. And i know the dreamcast got it first but gamecube also got ikaruga which ruled.
Oh and I want to be clear. I was just arguing Xbox V Gamecube. Totally agree PS2 ran away with the crown. Not even close. I feel like when I try to remember all it had... it was an avalanche.
For what it's worth, you can play coquette with a GameCube and it will still work. Don't know what that has to do with anything, but it survived getting "coquetted" with a sledgehammer a few times and still ran solid.
PS2 but the other two were great in their own respects tbh
Amazing console generation
PS2 had one of the best libraries of games of any console.
To me, PS2 wins hands down.
Yeah. It's not really close. Not to say that the Xbox and GameCube were bad, PS2 was just that good.
Still to this day really
Xbox had the best online MP though. Live was mind blowing at the time.
While I loved the OG Duke controller (big hands) the PS2 just had a better all round library. So PS2 for me
PS2 had a large library with great exclusives, but weakest hardware, 3rd party games than usually ran worse on it, worst loading times, and IMO the weakest controller.
Xbox had a smaller library with some good exclusives, but IMO not up there with Gamecube or PS2. S controller was great along with having the HDD, best online support, and overall good quality hardware.
Gamecube's biggest issue was the custom discs used that made it hard for many 3rd parties to come aboard. Those that did and made exclusive games tended to release some of the best ones. Gamecube had the best controller IMO, most efficient hardware in terms of power and performance, and best library of exclusives if you consider 1st and 3rd party exclusives.
All 3 are great in their own way. PS2 has the largest and most balanced game library, while Xbox and Gamecube have superior hardware and controllers, your choice being whether or not you prefer the exclusive titles on each. I prefer Nintendo's games.
PS2 had a large library with great exclusives, but weakest hardware, 3rd party games than usually ran worse on it, worst loading times, and IMO the weakest controller
The PS2's hardware is incredibly strange and very difficult to program for compared to the Xbox and GameCube, so I'd expect most ports to be worse. Powerscaling this generation is especially problematic because all 3 systems had certain quirks that made them excel in unique ways.
For example, dispite being considered the weakest of the 3, the PS2 was a fill rate monster. Complex layered alpha blending effects are something that modern graphics hardware still struggles with, but the PS2 didn't break a sweat. Beacuse of this, games made for the PS2 could abuse alpha effects to do things that weren't possible elsewhere, even on PCs. Effects like the rain in MGS2, Silent Hill 2's fog, and GTA SA's post-processing ether caused slowdown, were paired back, or cut entirely when ported to other platforms.
Great point, there are definitely lots of PS2 games that outclass others graphically. kingdom hearts series is another great example
That's actually a really weird example, because the PS2 KH games aren't really pulling off much in the way of complex effects. They just have great art direction and really nice looking assets. They technically don't even use lighting. All of the shading in the game is done by hand via vertex colors, and isn't dynamic. The techniques used are extremely simple.
weakest controller
WHAT? Just like Xbox this is when they figured out their ideal design and stuck with it; idk how you can say the og DualShock 2 is worse than the og fat Xbox controller, and I personally did not like the GameCube controller though I know it’s loved by some folk
I think the DualShock 2 is a fine controller and definitely better than the Duke, but not as good as the Xbox controller S. For Sony I think the ps4 controller was the peak of design and the PS5 controller is great too.
PS2 hands down.
GameCube was Nintendo’s last great console imo. Xbox won in terms of graphics but PS2 game library.
Any answer other than PS2 is wrong.
PS2 no question
PlayStation 2
PS2
History answered this 20 years ago
Xbox wins for online functionality
PS2 wins for game quality
Cube wins for console exclusives
PS2 but Halo definitely puts Xbox close behind imo. Also love Gamecube. That was just an all-around great generation imo
I had a PS2 and Halo & Knights of the Old Republic were the two games that made me want an Xbox.
I still think PS2 won but boi did I want to play those games.
GameCube for me, I loved Mario Kart Double Dash!!
Same because I’m a biased Nintendo baby
But ps2 was pretty badass
I cannot deny that. Played a lot of God of War I and II on a friends PS2
See I had no idea god of war was a thing back then. GameCube never got the cool badass titles but we had the badass Nintendo ones so not complaining
You guys got turok evolution and resident evil 4 before ps2 and xbox
I shoot didn’t know that… okay maybe we got some cool titles
Side note, always loved Turok but never played it on GameCube. Worth giving it a go these days?
Evolution is a lot of fun and highly recommend it, though it doesn't have as many secrets to find as the older ones, opting for a longer story
Okay cool cool, appreciate u (◕‿◕)
PS2 is honestly the best out of them, but my heart truly belongs to the cube lol
The PS2 was absolutely Playstation at their prime and it shows, no way it doesn't win
The PS2 has the best library ever
It's PS2 and that's not really a debate. You can like one more than the other, but in terms of who won, it's PS2 by a landslide. It being a cheap DVD player was a huge reason for its success, and it had a huge game library
PS2. Had one of the greatest game libraries of all time. If not the greatest.
Ps2 won... big time!
I grew up on the ps2 as it was a hand me down from my cousin. But I was jealous of the GameCube tbh
Loved the GameCube, but the PS2 was the better console.
I don’t know dude GameCube has so many amazing games, but PS2 has my all time favorite game Persona 4. Also Xbox has Halo.
Ps2 was so fire but Xbox had halo so Xbox for me unfortunately
PS2 by a good margin
Cmon you fishing ps2 is facts
That generation was great.
PS2s library was just insane and the GC exclusives are all time greats.
Xbox was a little redundant with the ps2 but it had a better online system.
I'm team Microsoft but in that era I had a PS2 and GameCube never had the original Xbox but if I had to choose out of the there I'm going with ps2
Isn’t ps2 the greatest selling console ever?
Coming from a big Nintendo fan boy... PS2 no contest
As an avid Xbox guy, Xbox was great because of Halo, but PS2 is the clear winner here
PS2
What year is it?
The PS2 won, lol. It had many great games. That’s something Nintendo failed to procure for its GameCube.
Xbox was ok
I owned all 3
PS2 then Xbox. Game Cube was hit or miss for me.
Why is the PS2 trending again?
Cause it’s the best. 😭
I actually like all of them for different reasons. If I absolutely have to choose, though, it would be the PS2.
PS2, Xbox and then GameCube.
I know people who still have their PS2 hooked up
They are lucky
PS2 is still one of the most sold consoles of all time. Its place as one of the most influential consoles of all time is undeniable.
Xbox was successful insofar as it became a household name when Nintendo and PlayStation had effectively killed all other consoles.
GameCube….I don’t think I need to elaborate on why it’s not the winner.
The PS2 library defined a whole era of gaming.
PS2 is one of the greatest systems of all time. I love the GC but that was where Nintendo really started to fall behind on hardware. And those tiny discs were just silly.
It's funny because the GameCube was more powerful than the PS2, but Nintendo had to use mini discs some games that arguably would've run better on the system skipped it because they couldn't fit on the disc.
PS2 has the best library.
The problem with GameCube is that, while it’s technically as powerful as the other two consoles, Nintendo made the frankly stupid decision to use these custom tiny ass discs that only hold a little more Data than PS1 CDs, so the GameCube missed out on a lot of great games simply because they were too big for the GameCube discs to hold, and the few big games that did managed to make their way to GameCube were on multiple discs to hold it all.
Xbox imo
PS2 - Ace Combat
GameCube - Gauntlet
Xbox - Halo
I love all 3 of those games.
Ps2, Xbox for online GameCube for Pso and Mario kart double dash.
Ps2 all day but I was always jealous of people who had a GameCube. They were just cool looking
PS2 is the right answer. But the Xbox trio of Halo, KOTOR, and Morrowind is what turned me from someone who plays games into a GAMER.
I’d say Xbox but mostly because it had halo. That game single handedly redefined the shooter genre and is what catapulted it into the most popular genre today. There hasn’t been a shooter after it that hasn’t borrowed at least one important gameplay mechanic from the original halo, and there probably never will be.
PS2 is the best selling console of all time iirc. It won 20 years ago.
It’s PS2 but once I was able to add music on Xbox.. I never went back.
Xbox for me, the S Controller was great plus great game choices
Ps2 was my first out of these 3. Maybe I hold it dearly. But I eventually became an Xbox guy. It comes down to the controller. I really prefer xbox style and back then you could not swap remotes to whatever fit your hand best you had to pick a console.
Ps2 for its library and ability to play dvds, xbox had best hardware, and GameCube just had a couple good games but was probably the worst console of the 3
Gamecube and wii are my favorite consoles, but cmon, ps2 is THE game console
Ps2 for sure but GameCube is also great
For me it’s Xbox but that’s just because it was my first console and I mean it did have better graphics than the ps2
PS2: symmetrical sticks on the controls
I have amazing memories of all
PlayStation was fantastic for single player game, only a handful of games I played 2-player and using the 4 controller adapter
GameCube was so much fun with friends.
It’ll put the Xbox in 3rd place, but man was it great seeing Conker Live and Reloaded on it! Also Halo.
PS2 and it isn’t ever going to be close
Xbox is technically superior and ahead of its time with the hard drive.
But ps2 wins easily due to the library of games
Xbox was a technical powerhouse with great games and a best in class controller, but coming later it could never catch up to the PS2.
PS2 had the best library (ever), and a DVD player.
Gamecube was a cube that had Nintendo games as such it does nothing for me. Despite getting trounced in everyway by the xbox and ps2, some neckbeards will claim it to be way better than either of them because it had a zelda game on it these people never grew up.
Well at this point Xbox was in its Atari 2600 stage. Meaning it was the first of its kind and at the beginning of its run and it’s a hit.
PS2 is like the SNES to NES. Upgraded by a bunch! Of course it’s also a hit
Gamecube was more of like a prototype. Testing the waters of what should they do new.
GameCube holds a special place in my heart… 2001 baby’s know!
For me it comes down how easy it is to mod them so ps2 because it's easy asf
Game Cube for me. Too many first party games there that are some of my favorite games…
I can’t choose because I have all of them
the ps2, it was on a whole other level. fun fact about the ps2 the last game made for it was a soccer game released in 2013. most consoles don’t receive a game 13 years into its life cycle but this one did that’s how popular and amazing it was.
Statistically speaking PS2 but I’ve only experienced the gamesquare
PS2 no contest.
PS2 the champ. Xbox was great and Gamecube had some hits.
PS2 obviously. Best controller. Lots of great games.
Look, I know the PS2 has more well known games, but the GameCube has double dash. Nothing can compete.
And Melee, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker.
I preferred xbox
I don't have a ps2 so I'm biased with gamecube
PS2 for the best game library. Xbox for performance. GameCube for game library and fun.
PS2 still the hottest console ever exist again today so.... Personally, I was more Gamecube at this time.
PS2 was just too beautiful. I just wish they could put it back on stores.
PS2 had the best overall library due to sheer volume even if there was A LOT of shovelware in retrospect, Xbox was the most powerful with the best versions of multiplatform games, and GameCube had the best first party games while also being the console that I owned from that generation that still works because it was built to survive a nuclear holocaust. If I had to pick one now, I would pick the GameCube because it was more powerful than the PS2 and still had a better selection of first party titles than Xbox (Halo 1 and 2 were peak though). Many of the exclusives on GameCube are still stuck on it as well. Most of the best PS2 games have become officially available through other means and Xbox has made many of the OG's killer apps playable on future systems. If I was transported back in time though, PS2 would win hands down. It would suck not to have Melee or Halo, but I could survive.
library - ps2
graphics - gc
online - xbox
Xbox live was a revolution for me.
GameCube was a pretty close second, PS2 I didn't get into until much later
I prefer the GameCube, personally, followed by Xbox. I never got into the PS2 as a kid. The GameCube I was very excited about.
The PS2 has the deepest library of the three by far, but I'd argue the GameCube's got a better top end (Metroid Prime is my vote for best game of this generation).
Xbox...Halo and Fable are legit, I'll give it that.
PS2 clearly won.
But the GameCube is incredibly underrated. Some absolute bangers on that system. Double Dash and a solid stretch of Mario Party Games, Peak Mario Sports games in Strikers/Baseball. Lost Kingdom 1/2, Eternal Darkness, Giest, Pokemon Coliseum and XD, StarFix Adventures, 2 Rogue Squadron games, Battlion Wars, Yu-Gi-Oh Falsebound Kingdom!!! Fire Emblem, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and the OoT Master Quest remake. Metroid Prime 1/2. Tales of Symphonia.
Like the system had some hits!
GameCube
PS2 was my first console that my parents bought me and then Xbox 360 Resident Evil V was the first console I bought personally! So both are top two in my opinion.
GameCube is my favorite of the three but PS2 obliterated both
Ps2 because splinter cell
Ps2 even with the Modded aspect of the xbox. Ps2 just did its job and had the library to back it up.
Ps2 even though I play mostly Xbox now
Xbox was a distant third for me because of the original controller design. Even after mine broke, GameStop refused to replace it with the then newer ergonomic ones. So, I just sold the entire system. Got more mileage and games from my PS2, but I loved and still have my GameCube.
I loved em all.
I got an Xbox, but only because I wanted to play Halo and one if my closest buddies already had a ps2. The other one got a GameCube.. so we just switched all the time .. it was a fun way to live.
Plus re4 on the GameCube made us all grow extra long pubes.
Xbox marketed hard to the US Military. So many of the other enlisted guys I met that didn't already have a PS2 got an Xbox because the AAFES stores always had them in stock.
Can't we just appreciate them all?
PS2 probably wins for most people. But to me the GameCube is the perfect console
PS2 I’m pretty sure beats every other console.
PS2
I liked sports games on GameCube.
PS2 in my humble opinion has the greatest game catalogue of all time and it's not even close
By hours put in its gotta be Xbox followed by GameCube
My PS2 died prematurely because my sister knocked it down storming out because she lost on Burnout 2
OP you know this question isn’t fair
PS2 all day long. It comes down to the games.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved the OG Xbox, but the PS2 was the one.
This console war generation was a no-brainer. The PS2 won with a 1st round KO
PS2 won in terms of sales and game variety. It’s the best selling console and it had a ton of variety of quality games, particularly Japanese games.
Xbox was stellar for introducing a lot of PC only games to console and setting the standard for online play and services. WRPGs, shooters and online multiplayer paved the way for this system. It had some surprisingly niche Japanese output too, particularly from Sega and Tecmo.
GameCube was stellar as far as certain individual classics like Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, Smash Bros Melee, Resident Evil 4, but it didn’t really leave a lasting impression and a lot of the experimental takes on series were abandoned in later entries. It was the last Nintendo home system with great third party support until the Switch, which in hindsight is freaking nuts.
PS2 was the best hands down.
GameCube comes in second for the Nintendo exclusives and resident evils
Xbox I never liked it, massive controller and just not that great
Not the answer you want, but we all won. This was the golden age of gaming imo
PS2 didn't get discontinued till PS4 was released on the market
Neither, all of them were good and enjoyable
Right here back in the day you actually had games you couldn't play elsewhere you had to get Xbox to play gears you had to get GameCube to play smash you had to get PS2 to play well fuck im drawing a blank since I mainly played on PS2 so can't remember what was exclusive but you get my point 🤣
Consoles are consoles, they're supposed to be for fun so choosing a side, especially now, is just pointless. All of them had their pros and cons
Ps2, OBVIOUSLY
PS2 had Bully and Fahrenheit, which I adore, but the Gamecube had Resident Evil 4 and Hunter. This is a really hard choice because both systems played an important part in my childhood. Probably Gamecube because my sister and I would wake up early each morning in the summer and immediately boot up Resident Evil 4. We took turns playing, and it was the best.
Kids don’t understand how hard this generation went.
My first ever console was the Xbox. Later on I’d come to have many GameCube games be some of my favorite games of all time. And I do recognize and respect the cultural impact of the PS2.
PS2
GameCube was underrated in my opinion. Had some dope ass games on there
GameCube was underrated
In my opinion. Had some
Dope ass games on there

GC had the best games
I'll stand with Gamecube til the day I die
Gamecube hands down
best controller and good games
GameCube.
Gamecube. It has some bangers.
- PS2
- Gamecube
- Xbox
For me?
Xbox
Gamecube
N64
PS2
Game cube because it’s never had a rival n it’s never needed to compete it’s stayed in a lane of its own and has always been successful
Ps2>GameCube>Xbox
Gamecube was and is still my favorite of the three.
PS2>>>>cube>Xbox
GameCube and XBox
Just my personal preference but tbh I never really cared for the PS2’s exclusives
Even when I was younger a lot of them just felt like they were edgy for the sake of it
For my money it’s Xbox’s library followed by the GameCube’s followed by the PS2’s
I know how each one sold, but if I was on an island and could only play one of these consoles with their entire libraries the PS2 would be my last choice out of the three
Gamecube had the best exclusives. I never owned an Xbox, but it had better exclusives than PS2, and this is coming from someone who has Sly 2 in his top 10 but not an original Xbox exclusive anywhere close to that list. PS2 was an affordable DVD player. That's why it sold.
Where we’re at now, GambCube games are significantly better than either of them, and it’s really not even close.
I was about to say "PS2, of course" and leave it at that... but then I remembered the GameCube lineup, and man, there were a lot of banger games on there.
Xbox had Halo, I suppose.
GameCube is my personal favorite. I love its quirky presentation, especially its controller. It’s also the console where three of my all time favorite games come from - RE4, Killer7 and Metroid Prime
Easily the cube.
Ps2 had bettet games overall. Xbox exclusives where gems
Xbox loses by a long shot, PS2 edges out N64 in a close race.
PS2 won a long time ago.
Xbox was solid.
Cube was love it or hate it.
