Steve Albini, Noise Rock Pioneer and 'In Utero' Engineer, Dead at 61
Damn, it's been about 20 years since I last seen that website.
This hits hard as an older musician. I'm late 40's and already feeling that existential dread like I am on borrowed time. 61 is fucking young to die.
I was living in Chicago playing music in the late 80’s/90’s when he was on the rise. He was a contemporary and an early legend after In Utero. The hardest part about getting old is when all your heroes start to die. First Prince, Bowie, Albini, I have few heroes left that aren’t over 70.
This is why I play jazz. All my heroes died before I was born.
Sorry- I know this news is fresh but let’s not lose our collective cool. This is a sad loss but artistically albini is not in any similar realm or arena as David Bowie.
I have no connection to Bowie, but half the bands I played with or interacted with in the 90s were connected in one way or another to Albini. So maybe don’t be a twat.
Albini produced more than 2,000 albums. His fame may not have been as expansive as Bowie’s, but he remains an icon for a generation whose music aesthetic he helped define, and which resonates throughout modern rock today.
For those of us who work or studied what happens behind the scenes on albums - ya, he was a legitimate hero. Next you going to tell me no one knows Rick Rubin?
- He was a fucking kid.
I feel you. I'm in my late 30s now. Had a heart attack at 36 and ended up getting a quad bypass.
I've been writing songs like crazy lately. Talk about borrowed time. Gotta make the most of it.
a devastating loss, truly a legend
shellac of north america
This dude was one of my top 5 "I wish I could be as cool as this guy" people in my early 20s.
Hope he's resting easy.
Albini talked about how much he loved looking at child porn. He could rot in hell for all i care, he was a POS. If you haven’t heard of this, do a quick google search and stop being upset about this kid diddler
Shit I didn't know he was sick. I mean, he was a bit of a sicko, but hell.
I dug what he did.
I am stunned..... I am blackened.... I am shellacked..... how did he die?
Heart attack. Get a stress test.
Oh god what habits do I share with him
Thank you 🙏
No fucking way!
Bummer man.
packwatch, pedophile
Incel guitar nerds wear their guitars at half-waist today.
This guy is tone deaf in regards to this news and probably as a musician as well, crazy.
I say that with high praise, I’m a big fan.
"Well, I think I've been in enough situations to realize that every band has an aesthetic. It may not be an aesthetic that I find particularly laudable or whatever, but it might just be that I don't get it. Before he died, John Peel said something that I thought was really profound. He said when he gets a record from somebody and he doesn't like it, he assumes that it's his problem and that the band would not have made that record if there wasn't something valuable about it. And I kinda feel like that's an appropriate perspective."
"It might be more interesting to compare [Walking into Clarksdale] to a vacuum. That record exists, and it wouldn't have otherwise. So which would you prefer? That record or silence?"
