Warhammer Age of Sigmar Faction Focus: Soulblight Gravelords
Almost guaranteed it won't be playable in spearhead
It’s been out of circulation for years hasn’t it? It’s not getting spearhead rules I’d bet. It’s a cool box though.
Our recursion is not based on dice but a command point. I think that is better.
Yes Lauka Vai is in a hard spot because she doesn’t benefit from look out sir and no more finest hour and no mystic shield so she is barging in on a 4 save.
I like her spell on terrorgheist assuming he keeps 6 mortals on the bite. And that rampage will do more damage than the talons used to do.
I think these 4 base formations are what everyone gets. We will get more stuff maybe by subtraction when we get our book up to 3 years from now ha ha.
Radukar a wizard weird. He will always try to cast the spell to get what was on his old warscroll and will probably have it unbound half the time. But that’s life.
The riders of ruin more useful now that it has infantry keyword and they have 12” move. It was hard to run them over units and clear their bases by 3” and end the move out of combat with a 10” move. Watch out for the dirty trick Orruk that eliminates charge bonuses will be hell on blood knights ha ha.
I don’t understand vargheist teleport. It is at the start of move phase. I assume it means you can’t move afterwards but that isn’t specified.
The vargheist teleport has the "core" keyword, you can only do one "core" action per phase and a normal move is also a "core" action. So if you use any ability with that "core" keyword in the movement phase it replaces the move action.
Lauka Vai’s spell on Radukar the beast is wild
I think it would say on the ability if you couldn’t move after setting the varghiests up again but maybe it’s a core rule. If they can teleport and then move I could see them being pretty good.

Ah ok thanks
How do we think Nagash will work with SB in 4th edition?
He gets the keyword which is a buff but not much otherwise. But who knows i think Nagash will be better than before.
Lauka vai losing her 3+ save and 2 inches of movement really hurts her survivability 😬
Almost all the high wound monsters have gone to a 4+ save.
deadly Invocation can now only target ONE Hero and all 3 target units must be wholly within 12" of THAT hero. Seems a bit unrealistic... So for most scenarios, this just heals one unit.
Edit: once per Turn in any Hero phase means in our and in our opponents one?
Yeah I’ll miss triggering it with my three heroes across the board. Always a fun moment. That being said, units like the necromancer and wight king already heavily benefited from being closely grouped with multiple units, so this should work okay for them.
yes, on our opponents turn as well :)
Vargheists just teleporting is wild
Kind of boring. Going to miss the flavour of our subfactions.
Am I wrong in thinking that sub factions have become Battle Formations? Same thing, but the buff isn’t army wide, just for the units in that Formation?
Your whole army is one battle formation (formerly subfaction). It’s just a new name. What you are thinking of is a regiment, which is grouped by a hero + associated units. There aren’t any special army rules associated with regiments.
That is correct. Formations are the new subfactions, for better or worse.
Much as I love seeing my boy Radukar on the focus and seeing him get damage 3...them turning him into a wizard is weird to me I won't lie....lol.
Everything isn't as bleak as I anticipated, and the changes made were close enough to what I expected without being TOO much. Nice.
He’s become a wizard and a monster
I saw that as well.
I still think the wizard part is weird. It's fine mechanically I just don't think he has the mental acuity for it.
The rampage is fun, and I feel he should've had the monster keyword before, though it opens up some potential vulnerabilities...
It looks like Endless Legions lets units come back multiple times until there are 2 models left in the unit. 20 models becomes 10, then 5, 3, 2, 1, and then no longer returns. I really like the rules overall but I really wish they showed the zombies warscroll!
The new wording says it had to start the battle with more two or more models, and since the replacement units didn’t exist when the battle started, they themselves cannot be replaced, is how I read it.
Wasn't there a rule that stated replacement units couldn't be replaced themselves?
This line has been missing from all the recursion in the faction focus so I'm assuming its going to be a core rule
Yeah - I think one of the Faction Focuses mentioned that they were the exception to the "Only one Recursion" rule, but I can't recall which faction that was
"There is no summoning units from nothing in the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, in order to reduce the need for extra miniatures beyond your initial army list. Instead, recycling destroyed units with powerful abilities is the order of the day. The Chaos Spawn of Tzeentch is designed specifically for this purpose as it is set up in reserves and unleashed straight into combat by the Transformed to Spawn spell.
Once your Chaos Spawn has been cut down by its former allies, you can instead use the same spell to revive a dead Chaos Spawn. Ordinarily, destroyed units can only be replaced once per battle – the Chaos Spawn of Tzeentch is an exception. It can come back as many times as you want, thanks to its Waves of Mutation ability." - from the Tzeentch Faction Focus.
Looks like until stated otherwise every unit can only be replaced ones per game.
Tzeentch chaos spawn.
I believe that was in the old army book. If you couldn’t do that now then the clarification of a unit returning if it had more than two models doesn’t make sense as it wouldn’t be needed.
I assumed they did that to stop you from returning Deathrattle hero's. I do hope you are right with bringing things back multiple times tho
The way they handled Wight Kings is that the Endless Legion rule specifically stated that a unit or hero can only be replaced once per battle. It no longer has that restriction. Endless Legions now would not work for a Wight King as it is a unit with fewer than 2 models.
Did we lose the 6+ ward?
No thankfully, all death armies have that you can see it at the bottom of the datasheets in keywords where it says "Ward(6+)"
No it's among keywords on every battlescroll
Looks fun. Glad we lost dynasties, radukar and neferata in one army here I cone
so there won’t be any Kastelai buffs possible? it was so flavourful
There are still subfactions so there could be a blood knight themed one all that's changed is that it doesn't affect what characters you can take.
That is unlikely. The paragraph after Deathmarch seemingly describes three other formations: one that focuses on spellcasting to buff Deathly Invocations, one that focuses on Vampire Lords, and one that focuses on Deadwalkers.
I would imagine the vampire focused one would work with Blood Knights and other vampire units at least somewhat.
Yea with Kastellai and the Crimson keep being mentioned multiple times in the dawnbringer books I think we’ll see them as the “Vampire” Formation
While nice for ease of list building, it's a bit of a shame to lose all that flavour and speciality.
Lots of models coming back all the time, along with a good amount of healing seems fun. The faction focus definitely shows an identity for the army.
My only concern with the model recursion is that you can only pick up to three units that are wholly within 12” of a single chosen hero. We might not always get to take advantage of targeting three units to heal, but if we can it’s 18 models per battle round!
Yeah definitely sets up a hero centered Fortress/Death Star units moving around. Hey if you enjoy big marching armies, it sounds great.
that does fit the Soulblight theme alot which is cool - swarms or an elite guard of undead serving a powerful vampire/character
But it’s possible they also include additional recursion in spells, while having that 1 guaranteed recursion as well
Does anyone know if the old Start Collecting box is available to play as a Spearhead detachment or do I have to buy the new Vanguard box sooner than I planned?
