Up north-like riversDiscussion

Looking for river suggestions…

Years ago I would kayak and float (tube) the pere marquette river and au sable river, and LOVED it. Can’t put my finger on it exactly, but there is a ton of fish, tall trees on the banks and clear water.

I moved to Oakland County last year and have kids now, so I’m looking for other similar-caliber rivers I can get out to with a friend to float and kayak. We did a stretch of the Huron river, between Dexter and Ann Arbor, and it was nice, but not quite as scenic/pretty.

Does anyone know of any rivers near Oakland county that match the beauty of the Pere Marquette and Au Sable? Ideally 1.5 hours or closer. Thank you!

Would you stay in Michigan or move to England?Moving or Relocation

All traffic is being moved off 75. Couldn't see anything ahead. Anyone know what's up?

How would you describe the taste of Vernors to someone who has never tried it?Discussion

I moved to the east coast several years ago and had a friend recently ask me about Vernors. She said she really loves ginger ale and wants to try it. While it has always been standard ginger ale to me, I now know that it is not traditional ginger ale to those outside of Michigan.

Nudist friendly placesDiscussion

What are the best things to do in Michigan? Discussion

A student (24F) who is moving to Michigan for the first time. I was wondering if someone could provide me with the best food places.

Thanks In advance!

Settle a dabate: what was a spanky? Shelby township pizza placeDiscussion

I moved away form Shelby township 20 years ago. I remember a pizza/party store on mound road just south of 23 mile.

They served “The Spanky”

I remember it as a meatball sub with pizza sauce and an enormous amount of cheese. Yum.

My friend remembers it as a pizza sub with pepperoni and an enormous amount of cheese.

Looked on Google maps and it seems that building is now a Mexican restaurant.

Anybody remember that place and what was on “The Spanky”?

Michigan-Based Rescue Has Tons of Adoptable Dogs and Is Looking for Adopters or Fosters!Discussion

Bottle Babies Rescue has a ton of adoptable dogs at the moment! If you want to meet some of them in person, there's also an adoption event in Dearborn tomorrow.

Bottle Babies transports dogs up from high-kill shelters in Texas, where there's a significant problem with strays and overcrowded shelters. It's got a lot of puppies, smaller dogs, older dogs - basically anything you could be looking for! Because Bottle Babies is a fully foster-based rescue, all dogs are placed in homes while waiting for adoption - meaning we have a pretty decent idea of their behavior and what you're going to get! Bottle Babies also adopts out to anyone who can make it to the Dearborn/Pontiac area to do a meet-and-greet, meaning anyone from around the state can adopt.

I'm going to selfishly highlight one adoptable dog in particular because she's my foster and it's my post, lol. Maki is a 2 year old female mix of working breeds who's looking for a home that can keep up with her! She would be a great fit for an active retired couple or a family with teenagers (she would do GREAT in a soccer family and loves chasing balls, haha!). She doesn't do well with cats and would only be considered for a home with another dog if the adopter has experience with resource-guarding, since she can get overprotective of her person.

She's a joyful goofball who never met a stranger on a walk she didn't want to cuddle, and although she has a taste for strangers' heels when they come into the house, that only lasts as long as it takes for them to bribe her with a slice of cheese!

In between walks or games of fetch, she's a couch potato. She loves playing with other dogs and does great with kids who are her size or bigger! She's looking for a forever home or another foster, since I'm going to be moving out of state in the next couple of months. Maki will be at the adoption event in Dearborn tomorrow if anyone wants to meet her, and I'm happy to answer any questions about her!

Also, in general, Bottle Babies is always looking for new fosters. Fosters are provided with everything they need to take care of the dogs (food, toys, veterinary care, crates, etc.) and the average length of a foster period is 2-3 weeks, with some outliers like Maki. You can learn more about fostering for Bottle Babies here: https://bottlebabiesrescue.org/become-a-foster/

DeerDiscussion

I live in Oakland County south of Pontiac. Totally bonkers with the deer poop and loss of flowers and vegetation. How do I keep them away from my home and yard? Ready to move to the desert.

Xylene ban in michigan?Discussion

I remember sometime in 2023 I could find Xylene at Home Depot. Now, it looks like it's been removed from the shelves in all stores across the state. Does anyone know what ban or regulation this move was a part of? I suspect it's related to VOCs but I don't see any changes that would have caused it to be pulled recently.

Criteria in Your Municipality for Special Assessments?Discussion

I'm wondering if anyone happens to have any documentation on the specific criteria your Michigan municipality uses for ranking the priority of special assessment projects - for instance, road surface may be bad on a bunch of roads, but the sewers may be worse on some, so they move higher up, etc.

I'm specifically interested to know whether any municipalities use residents' opinions or feedback as a ranking criterion.

Obviously the broad answer is: where improvements are needed. But I'm wondering if your municipality has publicized a process it uses to rank the road priorities. And yes, I tried googling ;)

Can DTE just dig up your front yard without even letting you know?Discussion

They were working on something for a neighbor's house and next thing you see, they're BULLDOZING our front yard. This happened maybe 2 months ago and at first, we thought it'd be no big problem because it will grow back. With all this rain lately, our front yard is absolutely disgusting and filthy. Mud is everywhere. It's getting tracked into our house from shoes (we take them off at the door now) but it also just looks so aesthetically displeasing. Are they allowed to just dig it up and then put all the mud back, then leave???? It's so infuriating because of course it is only our house. This happened years ago when we first moved in as well but I think I recall them actually compensating us and offering to fix it then repaved our driveway way for free.

I can’t afford to live on my ownDiscussion

making $20 an hour I still couldn’t afford to live on my own. To pay that rent plus other expenses. how are y’all doing? I had to move back in with my parents at 34 years old. And before that I lived with a roommate in her house. Rent starting at 1000+ there’s absolutely no way I could live alone.

2009 era Upper Michigan alt paperDiscussion

I'm a current Seattleite who was on a road trip with friends from Minneapolis to Toronto all the way back in March 2009. Part of the leg was on US 2 in Upper Michigan (we slept in the car on the near the Mackinac Bridge) but we stopped for gas somewhere along the way and I found a free alt paper that's one of the weirdest publications I've ever picked up. Part of it was Onion-style satirical articles about Upper Peninsula stereotypes (yoopers, Finns, etc.) that I've mostly forgotten about. I remember a written point-counterpoint between two random people about whether the US should adopt Canadian style health care, as well as a long article by an old man who moved to California after WWII reminiscing about growing up in Upper Michigan. I swear I didn't hallucinate this - I picked this up at a gas station. What might it have been called? Over the years I've always wondered.

What can I do about a creepy/dangerous tenant?Discussion

The house across the street from my parents was recently bought by a renter, who’s been renting the place to straight up drug addicts / mentally ill folk. we didn’t really have any issue with this until recently, when the current tenant came over and told my dad “i was going to fuck your daughter but i didn’t”. mind you, i have two brothers, but one looks feminine so i’m assuming it was about them. went to the police but they’re fucking useless, so basically wanted to see if anyone has any advice on what to do about this? i have a gut feeling this isn’t going to be the last OR worst incident.

edit: after calling the owner of the property, the man making the threats was moved to a different house. it IS confirmed to be a halfway house now, so i hope whoever gets him now doesn’t have to deal with that shit.

Bars in SouthWest MichiganDiscussion

Been living in Saint joseph and man.. this is ROUGH. I'm from an urban area and I'm absolutely mindblown at the lack of nightlife here.

Is drinking like taboo here or something? According to Google maps, there are exactly 2 bars in a 30 mile radius of my house that stay open until 2.

Staying open until 2 isn't the issue for me. I usually fizzle out around 12 or 1. But CHOOSING not to stay open as late as possible only points to a lack of patrons.. and it's true. I've been to 20+ bars now and past 11 pm you're lucky if they aren't asking you to leave because you're one of like 2 people left..

SouthWest Michigan people, please. Are there any POPULAR bars in the area? That stay busy late into the night? If not.. why?

Even the times I lived in rural Georgia we had multiple bars packed every night until close. I'm really confused as to what is going on around here. People have suggested southbend but again, according to Google most of those bars aren't reaching "busy" status.. ever. If they do its Friday or Saturday night only. A city that size?? With a huge college nearby?? They should have the bars packed until close even on weekdays like kalamazoo or Grand Rapids. (The cities I've resorted to getting a literal hotel in just to have some fun)

Any suggestions? The crowd/vibe doesnt matter. Can be predominantly latino, black, white. Can be LGBTQ friendly, can be a redneck conservative dive, can be club-like, can be fancy, expensive, cheap.. I'm worried I moved into a culture that's just not going to fit for me.

Garden of Life/Camp Suicide RoadDiscussion

So, I was in Michigan in August of 2023 on a bit of a road trip. I was traveling between Marinette and Marquette and was looking for things to do along the way. That's when I spotted what Google Maps had marked as the Garden of Life (or something similar). It was a bit of a detour, but the fact it had zero reviews, description, or photos made me curious. There were several miles of gravel roads to get there. I turned down a gravel drive that Maps told me to, and it turned out to be fenced off. I go back out then got redirected so I followed the directions onto Camp Suicide Road to reach the Garden of Life. I think I was met with another fence, gave up and moved on.

I was kinda curious if anyone knows anything about Camp Suicide Road, or the Garden of Life that's in that area. I don't see it marked on Maps anymore, and when I went there was no information that I saw on what it actually was. So any insight would be awesome! Thanks!

Oakland County Special Needs School DistrictsDiscussion

Hi there! Is anyone in the Troy/Rochester/Bloomfield/Birmingham school districts that has a special needs child in attendance?

We're currently in Royal Oak and our son (ASD/non-verbal) is getting ready to enter the school system in September. We are open to a move based on the best school district for him - we've heard good and bad things about each of the above communities, but would love to hear anyone's specific experiences (if you're open to sharing them!)

I know each child's experience is so unique, we're just trying to make the best decision for our son with the information available. We've already reached out to each school district, and now we'd love to hear directly about the family's experiences.

Thanks so much in advance!

Question regarding voter intimidation at polling station.Discussion

TLDR Mom got told to vote uncommited outside our polling station in SE michigan. They were not at legal distance and my mother got called a Genocide supporter after my mom said "No thanks". She told poll workers. This happened at Precinct 7, Cresent Moon Islamic Academy. Not sure what the poll workers did about it because she (my mom) left right after.

Just wanted to know what we should do if this happens again. For context, this happened last week and I just found out about last night.

Edit: I cut this post down to the main points. Removed the bit about security because people seem to be focused on that in the comments but its not really relevant now that I think about it.

Edit2: Thanks for those of you that actually answered the question instead of just accusing me of making the whole thing up and/or blaming my mother, appreciate you. I moving on with my day now, see ya later.
