I’ve seen various artist do this, KISS for example, they tape their guitar picks on the guitar, so do you all know what tape is used?
Gaffer tape, named after the job: Gaffer.
D'ya like dags?
100% that’s who I’m imagining behind the keyboard. That or Keith Richards.
“D’y’gotta roll-a gaffa?”
“Excuse me do I have a what now?”
“Rolla Gaffa”
“Rolo coffee?!”
“No! Gaffa! G.A.F.F.A.”
“No, we don’t sell Jaffa cakes.”
Excuse me, I speak Pikey
He must be from Boston.
Petitioning to call it Lowell Tape. RIP Ross. Thanks for the tape.
Very cool link ty
Amazing creative, inventive, brilliant man I never knew I'd like to know about. Thanks for the link.
Yeah, I know, but there being various brands that spell it "gaffa", and gaffer being more of a TV/film thing that a live shows thing, I just go with whatever really.
Legit some of the best tape you can use. I always keep a roll next to the roll of duct tape.
Dont wanna be a smartass, but isnt it "Gaffers Tape" Like the Tape of a Gaffer or for a Gaffer? (((==
Thankless job but the real heroes of putting on any show! We appreciate your service 🫡
I dunno man, I worked on some good stuff, but a metric fucktonne of shit too.
Painters tape is probably better than masking. Painters tape I feel is more sturdy plus it leaves zero residue
I would agree, but tbh, I'd never put tape on my own guitar at all.
Also: if you’re using masking tape, put it on your pants first so it “weakens” the adhesive and doesn’t damage your finish
Good tip, although I never worked with anyone who took much care of their guitars and would still put tape on them.
the answer is none. put the tape on your mike stand
Exactly. None. Keep using tape on your guitar and the finish will hate you for it.
Oh no not the finish 😩
We call it that "worn in" look
The “I actually play my instrument” look
Some people pay extra for that
relic’d
Only if it comes from the Relic region in California. Otherwise it’s just sparkling damage.
Congrats that was a great outloud laugh all alone. Thanks for that
Still snickering.
I work in the bike industry and the number of people who throw a conniption fit the first time their new mountain bike gets a teensy scratch in the paint is comical.
It's a bike that you ride up and down mountains. And, depending on the kind of riding you do, throw off jumps and shit. If it's pristine you're doing something wrong.
Pavement pedal princess
I wouldn’t want my finish marked up over not being able to keep track of a pick. Finish wearing from typical wear is entirely different.
It’s like the difference of getting pebble chip on your hood with the car you daily or keying up your door like it’s toilet seat in a house where no women would even dare to go.
I appreciate you making the distinction here. Wear and tear from actually playing? Tight.
Wear and tear from taping my guitar because I'm incapable of keeping my pick in my hand when there are 100 actual products that do this for you without damaging your guitar in anyway? Dumb
Yeah, don’t wear out the finish on your own. Pay the Murphy Lab thousands instead. That’s what us real musicians do.
Hahahaha I hate those things. I've been silenced on IG for posting my thoughts on those custom shop "creations". "Here, let me take a perfectly goodguitar, make it look like it's been sitting out in the rain for a year and then I'll put it on sale for $5000." Fuck that noise. You want a guitar that looks really worn? Play the fuck out of that guitar for decades. Then it'll look worn. And genuine.
Agreed
Guitars hate this one trick…
You guys get mic stands?
Who else is going to say “ooooooo” during the chorus???
I always keep an extra pick or two under my eyelids
Foreskin or no show
This is the answer. I can’t sing, but I have a mike stand just for picks.
What if we don’t have a Mike? Will a bill or Chris stand work too?
I've been using super glue.
I play SG or Tele on stage, unscrew the pickguard ever so slightly so it isn't super tight to the body, stuff a couple in
same for a strat
Never even considered that but thanks, I just have my pick, hold one at my lips like a cig, and keep a few in an empty back pocket while I’m on stage. easy access/switch out if I drop one
I do something similar. I put some in the space between my pickup and the mounting ring. It’s great so long as you don’t want pickup covers.
Boob tape
Gaffers Tape, which holds well and comes off easy, leaving little residue…
But use the mic stand, not your guitar… unless you are actively trying to relic the thing
Painter's tape. Gaff leaves residue, is expensive, and honestly unnecessary for this light job.
Yeah I don't know. Proper gaffers tape is made to be removed later. It's not duct tape.
I work in film and use it all the time. Even Pro Gaff, in the right conditions will leave residue. Those conditions are on a porous surface like wood, and in heat like stage lights.
I use gaffers tape… comes off easily but sticks well, and I’ve not had residue issues… it is expensive though… for precisely these reasons
sitting on a film set right now next to a whole crate of it on production’s dime. Name your price
Name yers?
I use the 5th pocket in my jeans.
Can anyone call themselves a guitarist if they don't have a pick in the fifth pocket at all times?
This is the answer!
That's what that pocket is for. I use that pocket for picks or sometimes keys
Watch pocket
Pick-pocket
Pic-pocket is what I'm calling it from now on!
If you love your guitar enough, it’ll be sticky enough to hold your pics naturally.
Jizztar
Jizzmaster
Jizzcaster
get a pick holder and stick it to the back of the headstock
Every guitar I own has a pick holder behind the headstock. Every guitar I’ve bought new from my local store lets me pick a few $ worth of free loot. It’s always a pick holder and picks.
I like this idea! Also, nice user name - we used to have an Isuzu back in the day that we drove into the ground.
I have on of those stuck to the wall above my amp lol pretty handy pick dispenser
I have a little leather pouch that I keep on my keychain so that anywhere there’s an acoustic guitar, I can be THAT guy.
Todayyyyy is gonna be the dayyyyy…
This is the way.
Just put it in between the strings near the headstock tuners. The fuck?
Well, EVH used duct tape folded over but that's hard on the finish.
EVH was practical about his guitars—always focused on utility over aesthetics. While admirable, this attitude isn’t always as sensible for the average non-rock star.
Oh no the finish on my guitar isn’t perfect it’s unplayable
Guess it's time to add a new guitar to the collection
Yep the finish checked on my custom shop SG. Time to throw the bitch out and spend another 5k
don't want to relic up my relic'd finish..
Yeah lol people suck for wanting to look after their possessions
/s
God forbid someone want to keep something nice looking. Hey, why don't you relic your car while you're at it?
Won’t really matter if you put the tape on the pickguard. But I prefer the mic stand holder, and if that isn’t an option, unscrewing the pickguard slightly and putting a few picks in the gap works too.
Put them in your mouth
I stick it under the pick guard of my Tele. Unfortunately my PRS doesnt have a pick guard (the one downside haha) so I have a pocket in my guitar strap.
It’s gaffers tape
I never drop my pick.
But if I did, I would use gaff tape, on the stand, under the iPad clip where the tab and lyrics go, which I also don’t use.
I have a couple of these. Holds multiple picks, small, has a 3m sticker on back. Just put it where it’s convenient.
Gaffe tape or masking tape.
The sticky kind works good.
I don’t use tape. I use Gorilla Brand poster tack (aka moulding tack) it has a great hold and leaves only a small, very easily cleaned trace behind.
Fun fact: lick your pick and place the wet side on your guitar (if you don’t mind doing that). It’ll stick, and it’ll be easy to swipe it off mid-song.
Edit: “set” to “wet”
Ammo belt across your chest
double sided
buy a $3 Dunlop pick holder and mount it to the axe with tape or Velcro
I would use like a light tack masking tape, then double-sided tape over that. The masking tape prevents any crap from sticking to the finish.
Same tape they use for the Left handed pics.
A sticky one
I use these pick holders they are fantastic
Or use a mic stand pick holder. No tape needed.
People drop picks? I mean I bring spares but they are in my pedal board case. I don’t ever think I dropped one. I’m nervous now
Assless chaps + picks between the cheeks. Thank me later. 😉
Pretty sure you can use Updog.
Nah, deez is better
yurk, that seems like a bad practice... like, you would have a bit of glue on your picks and it will end up on your strings, making them sound bad more quickly than they would if you were to avoid doing that sort of things...
if you really want one rescue pick somewhere on your guitar, you can stuck one between the strings between your fret nut and tuning machine heads?
otherwise, there's holders you can attach to the tripod of your microphone.
Rewind the tape or Check the tape
Blue or green painters tape. But don’t put it on your guitar! Put it on the mic stand. I typically roll it over to make a “double sided” strip, then stick picks to the outside — they come off more easily when you grab them (but don’t fall off).
The sticky type
If you go with the FlexTape you can saw the guitar in half. Joking aside, I would not use tape on my guitar.
There’s some sticky stuff similar to those sticky hands on a string.
Dude looks like he’s rockin’ 5 strings on purpose.
Y’know, I have a Takamine F360 which was actually discontinued back in the ‘70s due to a lawsuit by Martin because it was pretty much a copy of this exact model but being sold cheaper
"Alien Tape" is the brand name of an overpriced double-sided silicone tape that will peel off clean. It's not classic adhesive, it's like a micro-porous magic invention that grips without sticky residue. Buy some under a different brand name and knock yourself out.
Pockets?
Painters tape.
Just use your pants' pocket.
Double stick tape or carpet tape. It has many names
Put Gorilla Snot on your picks and you'll be much less likely to drop one.
I always assumed when people stuck picks on the edge of an acoustic guitar like that it was because of separation in the binding
Gaffer
hm. I just keep a few in my pocket. never felt the need to tape anything for my picks.
Gorilla tape
I just use my Ralphie tinand throw a handful in it.
Dunlop mic stand pick holders are less than £10. Mine came with a slide holder as well. Much better option.
This looks similar to my guitar, except it's a 6 string. Yamaha?
Just put it between the frets
Double-sided Gorilla tape.
Use painter's tape. Gaff will leave gnarly residue. Painter's tape is made not to do this.
it’s called don’t drop your picks tape. They have it at your local gigantic shopping center
Is that Post Malone with like a D 28?
I use painters tape (the blue one) on my mic stands but it’s probably good for guitars. It’s just sticky enough that it will stay but not sticky enough to do any real damage to paint or leave a residue. I roll it into a cylinder so it’s sticky on all sides.
This looks like Camera tape. Less gluey than gaffer or electric tape (don't use those)
Eww
Not related to your question, but I think I recognize those tattoos. Dave Hause?
Toe Jam works well..
Any cheap double sided sticky works. Any hobby store or office supply store.
None… keep anything sticky out of my instruments
Don’t mess up your guitar. Use the mic stand, instead.
The answer is none. Get a pick holder for your microphone stand. Both Dunlop and D'Addario make them. They are as cheap as $3.95. This isn't rocket science.
I dropped my first pic (alone in my apartment practicing) in about a year.
How often do you guys drop pics? I rarely do anymore.
- I like the straps that have slots for more picks, personally
- one of those pick dispenser on top of my amp.
Well, KISS is the best ever. So…
Either electricians tape or gaffe tape works for me
Baby batter. It's all natural and doesn't hurt the finish.
I would NOT recommend this, but if you must, do your research and get a very very low tac tape to avoid stripping the finish. Also do a check somewhere less obvious for reactions.
Keeps them warm ?
If you don’t want to leave marks use painters tape. If you don’t mind marks or using goo gone, gaffer tape or masking tape.
Pics?! Never use em
Y’all are dropping picks?
Gaffer tape, but don't put that on your acoustic. That tape is magical (it'll stick anything to anything), but it doesn't do wood with a nice finish any favors
Painter’s tape won’t damage your guitar’s finish.
Duct tape if you can’t find Gorilla tape.
How about painters tape, doesn't leave a glue residue like gaffers, or duct tape leaves
Pick tape. Duh.
Mine usually spilled shots..... 💁
Better yet, buy a pick holder for your mic stand you savages! I can't be the only one who uses one, they're like $5-10 and last damn near forever. Of course, if you're not using a mic stand, that complicates things slightly... but I'm pretty sure I've seen a strap mounted pick holder/holster on Amazon for cheap
If you aren't flicking them into the crowd, how many extra picks do you need readily available, at your fingertips?
I played 4 sets, 5 nights a week for years. Never broke or dropped a pick once. 🤷🏾♂️
Shits expensive.
gaffers most other tapes will mess the finish up and leave residue, but don’t leave it for too long if it gets hot it’ll melt -roadie
I put a pick dispenser on the back of the headstock on every guitar and bass I own. It's much nicer.
Washi tape. google it, wont leave any residue and even if it does, easily removed. its a sticky tape made of rice paper
Fender make this special ... Anything to hand, but like double-sided best. the squishy peel off stuff made by a 'large ape' is also good to have around for securing slidy equipment, sticking people to walls etc.
Forget tape on your guitar. Use your pocket like God intended.
Why not alice pick holders? Sold for just half a dollar here
I have a strap with little pockets for picks
I used to use BluTack
I use a pick holder
Careful with masking tape, my binding popped and I masking taped it until I could get it repaired, and now have some oil/residue stains on my finish that won't come out. It doesn't bother me, but it might bother you. P.S. this was on a satin finish, I'm sure on a gloss it'll be fine.
Pro tip: play with your fingers
I use Bubble Tape, myself.
Don’t put it on your guitar put it on the mic stand why would you put it on the guitar😭
It’s a super rare composite hybrid tape, that when used will amplify your playing ability by 215%.
Just use any dam tape 😬
not on the guitar.
I'd put it on my mic stand and not my Martin d28
I would only use blue masking tape and only stick your picks for a gig unless you have a guitar with a bad finish don't use regular brown masking tape
Painter's tape on a stand
Gaffers or if there’s a Freeman gig anywhere in the area we would talk them out of their double stick carpet tape.
Now that I run my own studio, I actually bought some of that freeman double stick and that holds picks on guitar and mic stands throughout my live room.
I use yellow duct tape on every single one. Since I started doing that I can't go without it.
Don’t, just don’t do this. Get a mic stand pick holder and stop ruining your guitars finish
Sticky
yes... sticky tape... anything sticky works.... or anything called tape also works,,,, There is no special "Kiss" Tape.... it's really just something sticky and called tape... hope that helps
First off Kiss was a goofy band your not a Rockstar don’t mess with the beauty of that wood on a nice Martin Guitar by putting adhesive on it! That’s s just silly! I absolutely hate when people put stickers or pick holders on there guitars! Carry your picks in your pocket or in a pick pouch inside your guitar case…
On acoustics, masking tape. On a mic stand, before those holders were about, gaffa.
