/r/GoPro Weekly Questions Thread - Ask all of your questions here!Q&A

Welcome to the /r/GoPro Weekly Questions thread!

This is the place where everyone, beginner or advanced, should ask your general GoPro related questions, or ask for help troubleshooting! We encourage you to post here rather than make your own thread, as this is a great place for us veteran users to answer your questions regularly, it minimizes basic question clutter on the main page, and allows users with discussion threads to stay on the front page longer before getting bumped off over time.

A couple notes before you get started here-

  1. We have community rules, and everyone needs to follow them. Please take some time to read through them and their descriptions, and if you have any questions, just PM the moderators!
  2. Remember to make your BEST effort to find the answer before asking. Read your manuals (link below), and use the search function and google to at least get yourself started. Asking to be "spoon fed" simple answers that can easily be found by googling will often get you a short comment, so make your best effort and share what you've found so far if you can't find the answer!
  3. If you have a problem, don't just describe it... SHOW US! Telling us you have some "blur" in your image could be ANY number of things, but showing us might help us figure it out for you quickly and easily. Upload some samples to youtube or imgur!
  4. This is a user-run community, and is not staffed by GoPro. We can make recommendations and share tips, but we can't resolve shipping and order issues, and for things of that nature you need to contact support!

Remember to check out the wiki in the sidebar for lots of useful info about all things GoPro! Below is list of resources for our most common questions.

Do I need a GoPro?

I work in the US and my family stays overseas. They’re coming to visit me for two months and we will be sightseeing A LOT, and we would also be going on hikes to scenic views. I will be travelling to visit them as well and have some international trips planned for the next couple years. I like documenting all moments and I own a DSLR and a good set of lenses. I am quite good at photography and have had a couple of wedding gigs & shoots.

My DSLR is clunky and heavy and I don’t think I can effectively take it everywhere with me and constantly use it as well. I can use my phone which is great, but I’d like some more opinions on whether a GoPro is worth it for the purpose I’ll be using it for. I don’t plan on using it UNDERWATER, but I’ll probably use it in the ocean and stuff where it might get wet.

TIA!

Which Gopro has live preview while recording?

Does any of the latest gopro (10/11/12) have live preview "via the app" while recording?

Thanks

Watoosh Short Film

Hey y'all,

My friend Ben and I made a short video chronicling our journey to master the powerful Watoosh. If this wasn't enough Watooshing for you, dont worry, we have many more Watoosh's coming down the pipeline.

We filmed this all in on Valentines day. Hope you were one of the lucky couples to see us Watooshing, and filming each other Watooshing.

Gopro 8 sound problem

Since 2 weeks I'm having sound problem with my gopro hero 8, last time I used it before that was in february and everything was fine. Last year I used it several time while ATV riding and also no problem.

2 weeks ago she randomly stopped, I thought it was the battery that was dead, so I change it, not able to open it, tried with 3 other batteries and same thing. ONly way to turn it on was to plug it once I got home. Now, I always have a hard time opening it up, sometimes I need to remove the battery and put it back in for the camera to turn on.

But the worse problem is really the sound. It will go all buzzing/distorting, I even try inside my house with no ambiant noise other than me walking and talking a little bit, and it was doing it. It will come and goes a couple of times inside the same video.

I've heard about the wind settings that can do that, I tried to turn it off (instead of auto) but only tested inside, it seems to be better, could it really be the source of the problem ?

I tried 2 differents SD card too

Here's an example, the original video was 2 minutes, and it did it 3 or 4 times.

Recommendations on model/settings for six month indoor manufacturing Timelapse?

The criteria is a few images per day, GoPro plugged into wall power, the older the model capable of this the better, memory cards available from 32GB to 512GB, and a minimum resolution of 1920x1080.

Help With Retrieving Pics

So I did a dumb thing. I opened the media from my HB10 using the Quick app on my iPad. Here’s the dumb part, I mistakenly thought that the data had transferred to the iPad app. So, getting ready for tomorrow, I deleted the data on the SIM card. Is there any computer magic that may help retrieve the pics.

Quik selecting wrong videos on IOS.

I select the videos I want from my photo library (iPhone 15 pro max with iOS 17.5) and Quik picks random videos in place of the ones I selected. Any help?

GoPro questions

Hello, I am going on a trip to rural villages in central America and while I am there I would like to make a mini-documentary showcasing the natural beauty, way of life, and culture there. The places we are going are extremely remote, so I need a very durable camera that can put up with the conditions.

I was thinking a GoPro might be the move but I am also looking to continue photography. I have entered into a few photography competitions and have done pretty well with photos taken on my iPhone XR. I also enjoy activities such as dirt biking and skiing but that is not too big of a factor here. The primary goal is for video, but I was wondering how well do the newer GoPro models (10,11,12) do with standard photography. I am not looking for DSLR quality, I am just looking for something that takes better pictures than an Iphone.

given my intended usage, would you all recommend I get a GoPro, another kind of camera, or just buy a new phone with a good camera to take my videos/pictures? Thanks

GoPros for vlogging?

Hello, So I'm not familiar with GoPros and their amentities. Since I am traveling more, I do want to make little vlogs of my vacations for memories. I was thinking of getting a GoPro, to include underwater shots etc. But not entirely sure if they are made for vlogging. If so, which do you guys think is the best? I know there are many models, but dont want to break the bank for the newest one

Thinking of buying a GoPro for motorcycle rides. Questions about QuickCapture

I would like to take a GoPro Hero 12 with me on my motorcycle rides. Normally I have my iPhone and, although it takes good quality pics, I have to pull over, take the phone out of the tank bag, take a glove off, enter in my pin because FaceId doesnt work with my helmet on, etc ….

Instead, I would like to have the GoPro attached to the chest strap of my Camelback, see something interesting and then take a photo (or burst) —all without stopping or taking my gloves off. I think the QuickCapture feature would be great for this.

Does anyone out there in reddit land use the GoPro in this scenario? How easy is the camera to operate with gloves on? How quick is the QuickCapture from button press to photo capture? Importantly, how long battery is life when I take photos (not video since that consumes more battery). I would like it to last 8-10 hours of riding (a long day for me).
Thanks 🙏

"my edit" in "studio" will not download to my phone :/

I spent hours editing on my phone, and then additional hours trying to download the finished copy.

It gets to 52% and stops the download. I cleared a bunch of space on my phone, made sure I had the latest app update, etc.

I really don't want to recut the footage again. Is there a way I can somehow get to my edited footage from a computer? Any other recommendations?

It's 2.5 minutes long, so it's not a huge file. I've also been able to download videos before from the app but I made this one slightly differently (basically I had 20 little clips on the timeline, rather than one continuous clip). The 20 individual clips I know are taking up a ton of space, but I'm hesitant to delete them because I believe "my edit" is pulling from their exact files (difficult to explain, but in "my edit" I can go extend each clip so clearly there is more data there than the 3 seconds it took from each longer clip?)

I need help with go pro 11

Hey redditers, so i have something very specific about my go pro what i need help with.

[english is not my first language, so sorry for any mistakes, and i do not know a lot about the go pro, so i do not know what stuff is relevant or not, so i just write everything what comes to mind]

About a year ago i bought a go pro 11 which i used for making videos, it's on the top of the car, so at times i go about with 80-100 km/h.

Last year i used it for some hours, there were no problem at all, i used 5k, 4k, 30 or 60 fps, it ran well on my camera and in my laptops too, the videos had no problem, i had them edited and i could see it perfectly fine in every gadget i had/have. But i can't really recall if i used something other settings.

So today i wanted to restart it, i charged it fully and had the softver update what my phone recommended [iphone, i saw the video fine in my phone today too], and i use an sd card for my go pro, it saved everything there. In the camera itself, if i start the video with the sd card in, it runs perfectly, no lagging. BUT and here comes my problem, when i take the sd card out and put it in my pc or laptop the video is super laggy, looks like its in a terrible slow motion and stops so many times. I used 4k-30fps, then 5k-60fps, 4k-60fps, 1080-60fps, 1080-30fps and it was in normal mode. Its the same laptop which perfectly played the raw videos too last year. I checked it in 2 different laptop and one pc, all the same. I read somewhere that for videos like this they recommend 1080-120fps, i will try that out too soon, but i wanted to write here if someone had something similar experience or if anyone has any idea what could be the problem and how to solve it? Any small idea could be a huge help, thank you so much if you took the time reading it.

Using ND Filters without a gimbal?

Hello,

I was wondering about buying some ND filters for my Hero 10 in order to create a bit more motion blur in my videos. I know that hypersmooth doesn't work well with slow shutterspeeds, so I would need to turn it off completely.

Now do you think I can get away with no stabilization when recording, and stabilize the footage later in Gyroflow? I wouldnt put ND filters on for heavy movements, just for walking around in cities or something like that.

Any experience with that?

Thanks :)

Hero 11 Mini Trouble playing once file transfered

I have uploaded a 25 minute mp4 video manually to the cloud and it plays fine.

If I attempt to play the file from my computer it doesn't work.

Would anyone know why this is please?

Can a GoPro handle 180°F?

I am working in a caving expedition we are trying to capture where the cave has very hot water, the inside temperature of the cave is about 110°F but the heat index we measured was 170-180°F. We want to capture footage in there but need to make sure the cameras can actually stay running/cool enough to operate. Any suggestions/recommendations for doing such a thing? Thank you in advance!

GoPro 9 - SD Card Error - already tried formatting multiple times

My GoPro 9 has the error message “SD CARD Error – Formatting your card is the only way to fix it, but it will delete your media”. I click “Format” & it formats for many hours before my GoPro goes to sleep/shuts down & the error message is still there when I turn it on again.

I already tried formatting on a PC using Windows Explorer (using Quick Format & the Full Format options) & the SD Card Formatter program (using Quick Format & Overwrite format option) but my GoPro still has the same error message.

I am using a SD card that GoPro website says is compatible – Samsung Evo Plus Series 64 GB Class 10. I have 3 of these SD cards (even bought a new one to try & fix this error message) & tried formatting all 3 SD cards as per the above paragraph but my GoPro still gives the same error message. Since I have tried with 3 identical SD cards that are compatible with GoPro, it is unlikely that the SD cards are faulty.

I have also reset my GoPro multiple times & checked that I have the latest firmware update (HERO9 Black v1.72 released 1 June 2022).

Can you please suggest any solutions? I believe that I have tried all the possible solutions suggested on the Reddit & YouTube.

TL;DR tried formatting on PC & in GoPro 9 using multiple compatible SD cards but it is still giving “SD CARD Error – Formatting your card is the only way to fix it, but it will delete your media” error message.

GoPro Hero 8 Not Connecting to GoPro Quik App

So I just bought this GoPro Hero 8 on a 2nd hand deal for about 160€. Everything is working fine, except that it won't connect via wi-fi to my phone with the GoPro app. I have already done factory reset, network settings reset on my GoPro and still doesn't work. I have another GoPro Hero 8 but the screen is shattered and it connects fine to the GoPro app. Is this camera faulty? I just like sometimes to preview my shots with the app.
Do you guys have any suggestions? Or shoud I just try my luck and try to contact GoPro support?

Using copyrighted music in GoPro video on Youtube

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. I am in the process of making a fishing video with my Gopro which I want to upload to YouTube. However, I want to use some of my favorite music in it which is all copyright music. Is there any way I can post this on YouTube without running into any issues?
