canyoneering: devoted to slot droppers

For several reasons, I find myself unwanting and unmotivated to moderate this community. I do very little canyoneering these days compared to when I became a mod back in 2014. Additionally, reddit's recent actions relating to the API leave me unwanting to contribute content to the site or moderate it; particularly if I can't use a client of my choice.

I unilaterally decided to make the subreddit private for 48 hours, and while I find myself wanting to make it dark indefinitely in response to reddit's lack of movement on this issue... I ultimately don't have the energy and don't feel it's fair to everyone to do that. This isn't my community, it's yours.

I'll be stepping down as a moderator for the reasons outlined above. I'm happy to add another 1-3 moderators before I remove myself. You should be an active member of this community.

Feel free to discuss how you think the community should (or shouldn't) respond to the API changes. And throw your name out if you want to be a mod.

Hey, going to do neon early next week, preferably without a wetsuit. Anyone down there recently? How wet was it? If it's just the 2 keepers and the rap at the end, think I'm ok without my wetsuit?

Hey friends, I live in northern AZ and looking for more partners to adventure with. I have experience with fast moving R level III and IV canyons.

I also love hiking, backpacking, and rock climbing.

I don’t mind driving for amazing views, cool people and good vibes.

My wife and I are signed up to do a "High Adventure Canyon Tour" with Red Desert Adventure next week. According to the info page for the tour, we will have some options for canyons. I have listed those below.

Does anyone have any recommendations? We've never been canyoneering before, so I can't really say what we are looking for. We are fairly active, with a lot of hiking, climbing, and scrambling experience.

I’m still pretty new to canyoneering, but I’ve been getting into more each summer for the past few years. I always just use my old climbing rope which is heavy, bulky, and just feels excessive at this point. Any recs on ropes or diameter, length etc.? I know I am looking for something waterproof and static but I feel like I am overthinking the length. Would 30m-40m be enough or would 60m be better or is that still too short?? I am primarily out west UT/AZ/CO. Any brands that are anyone’s favorite?

Hey guys. I’m an Utah local looking for advice on a first trip to the Swells.

Are there any good beginner canyons that are bolted (still require rappels but not super technical)? I have experience with some long multi-pitch rappels and have a lot of experience in the backcountry backpacking and rafting.

Any good sources for beta you’d recommend?

Any advice for classes/online content to upgrade my skill set to be able to build anchors, deal with water features, etc (I am located in the SLC area)?

New to rapelling but am fully invested. Is there any good all around shoes good for hiking and rapelling alike?

Me and my dad are looking at getting a self rescue set up for canyons since right now we rely on a jummar and brute strength to get up the rope if something does go wrong, Any websites or guides for good rescue set ups and techniques? For rappelling we use a 'Huit'/ Figure 8 for rappelling.

Besides Quandary and Woody, what canyons in the Colorado Plateau include some fun pothole problem solving?

Curious where this sub lands. Not including an "all of the above" because what is the fun in that?

Been looking into getting myself a fiddlestick and in my research i came across this method (included in the link below) of tying your anchor with a simple bowline and having the pull cord attached at 2 points in the knot so that it unravels when you yank the pull cord. Seems like a a super easy (and cheaper) alternative, without needing the extra gear, but it doesn't seem to be very common/popular and I couldn't find much info on the pro's and con's?

I have seen videos of people canyoneering with babies however I can’t find much research on how to be safe doing it and advice or how to go about it or if it is even a safe possibility to have baby strapped to you while doing it. My husband and I are planning on doing the subway hike in zions this summer and there are a few repel areas and some water to swim through in the slots. I am not set on brining the baby, she will be 12 months old at the time but if I can find safe ways to bring her and prepare appropriately than I would love to bring her. If it’s not possible to bring her safely then we will leave her at camp with one of us staying behind but we would really love to bring her so if anyone has done this type of thing with a 12m old and has advise and education for us please share. Or if this is just to unrealistic at her age, what age does it because realistic?

Update: There would be a large group of us going so if one of us stayed at camp the other would not be going alone. I was not set on bringing the baby anyway I was leaning against it in the first place and the comments on here have solidified that she will not be going with us. I have done the subway before 3 months post op ACL repair and I honestly didn’t think it was to bad, apart from the two people in our group who didn’t bring enough water for themselves the hike was great, however it has been several years since I’ve done it so maybe I don’t remember how rough it can get. I have applied for the permit and I do understand that a permit is required.

We will definitely wait until she is older before we start brining her on this level of adventure. Thank you for the comments and advice!

Looking for insights to these trails for canyoneering next week. Currently having to use 2 different ropes for the 280-300ft Egypt 2 rappel. Would prefer not to hop knots, and preferably not buy a a super long rope ill only use a couple times. Is anyone keen on joining an adventure or know where I can rent a static rope compatible with a GRIGRI for rapping?
