You can do whatever you want, none of those are bad options. Sales is the key to business though. You’ll never have a business if you can’t acquire customers (aka sell). Plus the earning potential is literally limitless if you’re good.

Almost every business student has these thoughts. The problem is, unless you come from family money or a family business, you have no experience or knowledge of how to create a business and no resources to make it successful.

Sales is the best base for starting a business, so suck it up and get a sales job to see if you can make it. If you can’t succeed in sales at a company with an existing product, brand, marketing, etc you have zero chance of selling a your own product from scratch.

I would say get a job in data and do this as a side hustle after you’ve gotten some experience. You are going to be really bad at it if you haven’t done it in a professional capacity with real business data. Small businesses are extra hard because they’re not going to pay for any tech that makes it easier.

Data is messy, it is complicated to move it around, and it’s extremely difficult to turn it into valuable & accurate information. You can try, but you’ll find out pretty quickly that it will be a long uphill battle to become useful enough to build a business around these skills.

I think this is mostly good advice. The one thing I’d call out is most people will not be able to forego an SBA loan/personal guarantee AND buy something big enough that they are not critical in day to day operations (aka buying a shitty job).

It seems like the $1m price point is around where small businesses for sale have enough employees to function without the owner being involved in every little function. And most people aren’t gonna have $1m in cash laying around.

Most people are gonna have to risk it all via personal guarantees to get a good business. I still think it’s a good option.
