He's a very active puppy and I wonder if they calm/settle down when they're older?
My gosh, you nailed it. I’ve been raising them with my family for 40 years. Unfortunately the 2 1/2 year-old we have now is a total lunatic. In the car, he bounces from window to window barking at shadows. He is the 20% that I don’t think will ever mellow out. You are on point in your description in my opinion. Rollz and Curtis, the loves of my life that passed in the last few years, were mellow meatballs.
I can’t even go for walks with mine. He shrieks at everything.
Squirrel? Screams like he’s being murdered.
Another dog? Screams like he’s being murdered.
Neighbors? Barks incessantly
I have to compromise by walking him at the local park early on weekends before anyone one else gets there.
Still wouldn’t trade him for anything. The Shar Pei personality just sets them apart from any other dogs.
Ours somewhat outgrew the shrieking just does sparingly
Lucky you 🙄 lol
How old?
He will be 8 in July
Years?
Yes
I walked my girl 3 times yesterday for a total of over 11 miles and she’s almost 9 years old. So no not really 🤣
😅 my old girl (13) goes on two 1 mile walks every day, plus a few mini pee-walks between. Granted she’s half, but I think her other breed must be very active also; she absolutely goes nuts for walks/rides still.
Well it’s good she’s still going strong at 13!
My girl was 5 when we rescued her so I can’t speak about her puppyhood, but at 9 she is still a firecracker. Still needs 3-4 walks a day. But we also added in different enrichment. Her food dish is a snuffle mat so she can’t just inhale and she gets the benefit of having to sniff and search for the kibble, she gets one frozen lick most days, stuffies galore to shake when she gets amped up, daily roughhousing with us and her big brother. It took us like a year and a half to figure out how to satisfy her need for speed but now that we have she’s just the best girl.
ETA: She is much calmer now and loves to snuggle up to us on the couch and gets mad when we’re not in bed by 10, but as soon as nature calls she turns back into a demon.
Ohh he’s ridiculously cute 🥰 my Mabel was pretty insane as a puppy, constant zoomies around the house and chewing everything up. Now (age 2) she only requires a one hour walk a day and will then sleep for most of the rest of the day (in between her window-watching guard dog duties). So my experience has been that she has calmed and settled quite a lot energy-wise.
Hah. Mine used to get wheezy even thinking about a walk
He's 14 now, and might move from the kitchen to the living room on a good day.
He's beautiful. He looks like my Apollo did when he was little. OP, treasure him!
O what a sweetheart ❤️
So cute! If he could talk, I bet he'd sound like Mr Shmee from the old Disney Peter Pan.
Damn that’s a cute pup !!!!
All mine were calm in later years. Puppy energy turns to lazy dogs later. In my experience anyways.
My goodness he's precious! I wanna squeeze those cheeks!
Also, my 5 year old pei basically sleeps 23 hours a day, so there's that. I've owned this breed for 30 odd years and all of mine were super lazy and laid back.
This is such a cute pup you have!
Depends on the dog. My Pei has been chill since he was 6 months.
Squishy pancake face! Adorable boi indeed!
I’m still waiting for mine to settle down. I’ve been waiting 13 years……
so cute they do look like teddy bears when they are pups, ares is so docile we think she has a weed stash somewhere in the house .
she is 10 yrs old though !
Idk but he's awfully cutr
Currently have an 8 year old Pei and she is till as active as when I rescued her at 3 months.
Begs for a walk or two a day and can walk just as much as she did when she was younger.
I will say the zoomies are lesser so once she hit 5 isg but she still gets them every so often.
I read somewhere by nature Peis are usually calm for most the day but quick to action when stimulated which just about half way sums mine up. Some of it probably has to do with training as well.
Good luck!!
My family have raised Shar Peis for 30 years, and I truly believe that 80% of them are docile and quiet in nature and moderate to low energy.
Then there’s the other 20% who are psychotically high strung and full of boundless, if not manic, energy. I finally got a Shar Pei of my own 8 years ago and I’ve yet to see him calm lol
