Struggle in the search for a track to remix

Hello lads.

After remixing a fairly well-known track of the moment (Lovin On Me by Jack Harlow), I'm looking for something new to remix. It's a period in which I delved a lot into the melodic techno / melodic house genre and I really liked the remix done by John Summit of Sweet Disposition. The search for a new track to remix goes a bit in that direction.

I'm listening to a lot of recent and old pop music, but for the moment I haven't found anything that particularly interests me. I thought about trying to make a purely EDM track like Dreamer by Axwell & Ingrosso of that genre, but I fear that the vocal is too "happy" to be able to bring out slightly darker sounds like those of melodic house.

So I wanted to ask you if you have any advice on how to look for a track to remix. Do you follow any "patterns" when it happens to you?

Are you the person behind his mixing and mastering?

I don't want his stems / accapella, but can I ask you anything about his productions? For example how complex they are, if you have any tips that you could extract from his productions for a person like me who tries to improve every day in music production.

Yes I’m the guy :)

I’m really busy with my mix+master business but I do consultation type of work for a fee sometimes.

In other words I don’t have a lot of time to reply to lots of questions for free (I don’t mean this unfriendly!); I do get some Qs daily, and, funny or not, I closed my socials (IG and Twitter) for a little while at least for that very reason this week, to have a little less noise, and I mostly operate via emails (I know it may be ironic that I’m hanging out here but I was checking how my Ableton video thread has been doing).

Also I don’t really show other artists’ projects to others for example…I honour a degree of client confidentiality in my work, whether it be a big artist or small :)

I'm a fan of John Summit, I love the way he switches between different genres such as tech house and melodic house/techno. That remix of Sweet Disposition has opened my mind and gave me lots of ispiration.

Yeah he is very hungry for making music and also to expand and experiment.
I've seen his progress for 7+ years, being his engineer for that time.
From simple, bassy, minimal club bangers to more complex and harmonically rich productions.
If I can say one thing, he really eats, sleeps, and breathes the music!

Considering the quality of his productions which has increased year after year and the ability to move from one genre to another without ever seeming banal, one can clearly perceive that he is a person who loves doing what he does and is positively obsessed with it.

I only produce remixes, and John Summit's remixes of 'Sweet Disposition' and 'I Remember' happened to be the references for one of my recent releases, so I'd like to chime in.

I don't have any specific pattern that I follow. I simply listen to random songs until I find one that I can imagine fitting the style of the remix I'm trying to make. A good place to start is by looking in the similar songs section of the original song on Spotify.

Sometimes, I do it the other way around: I find a song that I'd like to remix, and then I determine a style of remix that will fit the original song.

Interesting way to look for a track to remix..

I've tried listening the Top 50 global on Spotify but there is a ton of music that I really don't like at all (such as the ones by Taylor Swift).

Sweet Disposition by John Summit is the perfect remix in my opinion, because it's interesting overall and he has made it without losing the soul of the original track.

How do you guys get stems these days? Software? I’ve taken a break the last couple of years and the separation tools available back in 2018 (that I tried) weren’t very good, and so I mainly relied on remix contests for high quality stems to play around with… but I’m interested to know what y’all use these days as I’m pretty out of the loop

I use MVSEP.com to isolate vocals. The MDX23C and BS Roformer are two of the cleanest-sounding separation algorithms.

I think there's a ton of ways you can make happy vocals sound dark. You could reverse certain small parts, use them as chops and put reverb/fx on those reversed parts to make them sound long and freaky, I've done that before.

Recently I did a remix of Hozier's Too Sweet, I think most stuff is pretty remixable as long as it's around house tempos.

When I'm looking for a track to remix, generally I just think about playing a live set and envisioning house drums on the track I might remix as I look out at the crowd. If I think it would work, it's worth looking at.

I've listened to that track by Hozier and I was thinking that it's very slow to make it as an EDM track..
Did you have any problems with the needed of speed it up?

A vocal being happy, with dark and depressing music, is called juxtaposition. Contrast. The context of lyrics can change depending on the music
