The sound over this is “you’re just a man” and like? Am I mistaken? I found Percy being very unsympathetic entirely valid given the 4 years worth of murder attempts. I really don’t see how Percy could be expected to support her in that moment, especially after iirc she snapped at him when they were talking about it. I have a lot of sympathy for Annabeth here, but I’m not the one Luke has been trying to kill. It seems insane to me, but maybe I’m remembering the scene wrong? Haven’t reread in a while and the creator insists that this is about the fact that given that Luke raised and cared for Annabeth she needed support here and Percy didn’t provide it, so maybe she didn’t snap at him.
Exactly what it says in the book: "I wanted to comfort her, but I didn’t know how."
There is no point in him saying anything when he might very well tip her over the edge even further and make matters worse.
He obviously wants to make her feel better, but doesn't know how.
And like u/Practical-Day-6486 said, they are only 14, proper emotional reactions from someone that age should never be expected, even if they are far more seasoned and mature than anyone their age should ever be.
Indeed. In addition, at the time, he hadn’t live through her memories with luke, so the extent of the betrayal she was going through was quite literally unknown to him. All he knows is that Luke tried to kill Percy and that he supposedly helped Annabeth and Thalia on their way to camp
Very true! All he knew was that they were friends and he had been trying to kill them for three years at this point.
Agreed. It would make sense if people applied this level of rational thought when they discuss Annabeth in this book because the amount of times I've seen people bash Annabeth for BOTL but excuse Percy by saying he was just 14 is ridiculous. They're the same age.
Annabeth too. In this scene, the boy she had mixed feelings for (she had a crush on Luke but also saw Luke as like an older brother) had betrayed her and agreed to be possessed by Kronos. She’s distraught and is questioning her entire relationship with Luke. Did Luke ever like her, or did he just use her. That’s probably what was going through her mind
That's definitely what was going through her mind, so she was frustrated.
Plus this other seaweed headed guy that she may be falling for brought this other girl that liked him on an adventure with her and he doesn't seem to realize what the two girls are feeling for each other and for him, which is also frustrating for her.
There are a lot of emotions going on inside her super-Athena brain, and she overheated a little bit. She needed a minute to calm her racing mind down and he gave that to her, unintentionally or not.
Exactly, no one should expect children, especially ones who are literally in the middle of fighting a war, to be perfectly emotionally stable or rational.
Seeing this I’m now confused what “just kept talking to Rachel” meant. He said one sentence, which was complimenting her sure, but for something so incredibly gutsy that it’s astounding, and Annabeth brought it up so it’s not surprising that he mentioned it either. And when she was crying, he may not have done anything to comfort her, but it’s not like he just sat there chatting while she sobbed, they moved on immediately after.
Yeah I agree, the person in the ss has excessively condensed the experience at the moment, but it has a lot of layers. They were 14 year olds, in the middle of the dangerous labyrinth, and Rachel is a mortal who was there because Percy asked her to, and they just almost died I think (it’s been a while since I read BotL sorry). Rachel hitting Luke/Kronos with the brush is the only thing that saved him.
And I get Annabeth’s reaction as well, obviously, Luke was so important to her, the disbelief and fear being portrayed as anger is completely justified.
And I think Percy giving her a moment and some space instead of pushing in meaningless words he didn’t mean is quite mature for a 14 year old kid.
Yeah like honestly him being blunt is because he's seen her time and time again make excuses and he's certain right now that Luke is gone and she needs to accept it or it might get her killed. She needs to see only the facts.
I knelt next to Annabeth. “Hey, I’m sorry. We need to move.”
Did the person screenshotted in this post miss this? LOL
I've seen this person's posts before on Insta. They miss a looooooooot of stuff from the books.
They're likely not missing it. They're purposely doing it so that people will comment to correct them
Oh no. Sadly, they fully believe it and so do a lot of their commenters/followers.
Dude tried to murder him and he still wanted to comfort her about him.
this made me realize Percy was surrounded by 3 people that had a crush on him, what is bro suppose to do lmao
Continue be clueless
Rachel, Annabeth, and ...Nico? I didn't pick up that vibe.
You have to remember that in this book, they’re only 14. They’re just figuring out that they have feelings for each other and don’t know how to deal with it because they’re so young
Yeah, I don’t think Percy really owes Annabeth shit in that scene. Like, sorry your terrorist ex who wants to kill me and end the world is having a rough time I guess.
I think you’re failing to see why you’re being downvoted.
This situations you brought up are vastly different from Annabeth defending Luke.
Using the Calypso example, Percy isn’t falling over himself trying to justify Calypso as not in the wrong or how she’s actually being controlled. He isn’t trying to deny Annabeth’s feelings over anything.
As for protecting Percy from the knife… again, protecting a friend’s life is a completely different from going along with their delusional, albeit understandable belief that their murderous friend is actually redeemable.
Percy all throughout the books wanted to believe in Luke, that he could be redeemed. But again and again he was scorned and had his life threatened. And the thing is, Percy wants to make Annabeth feel better in this situation, but doesn’t know how to in a way that doesn’t involve him nodding his head and saying “sure, Luke is totally buried deep in there, lemme just grab a shovel,” because he sure as hell doesn’t believe that.
While I agree with some of your points, you are being too harsh on Percy here. I am not saying he did the most appropriate thing, but he wasn't 'unsympathetic' because he was more worried about the end of the world than one guy who is his enemy.
1: He had barely escaped with his life after coming sooooo close to dying/being captured by Khronos without being able to do anything against him. No one can think straight immediately after such a shock + he is 14, come on.
2: His last hope that perhaps he wouldn't need to fight the Father of the Olympians, probably the biggest threat to Olympus since the gods took over is now gone, and he barely has any time left before the war.
3: A literal war is coming and he has no idea how it will play out. Of course, he will be thinking more about the end of Western civilisation and his friends dying than one guy who was close to Annabeth who is the main reason all this started in the first place.
4: Till now, Luke had done NOTHING for Percy to care much after his betrayal which hurt Percy the most (literally and Annabeth wasn't there and sort of expected this), He tried to kill him and his friends many times, is the reason why everyone is in this mess, has been given MANY CHANCES by Percy to come back but didn't, was a prick to EVERYONE Percy cares about (like in the Princess andromeda). Even if he was not jealous, He has plenty of very reasonable reasons not to care about luke (adding that luke CHOSE his path)
5: He does not know much about how much luke meant to Annabeth or how he was before his scar, but even then, Thalia and everyone else in the camp was now his enemy (especially after the TTC where he kidnapped Annabeth and others). Annabeth is the weird one here by clinging on to Luke's goodness when even Thalia gave up.
6: Now that Khronos is back, the camp is in serious danger and his good friends will die if they are attacked.
And lastly, the heck is he supposed to say? That he will bring back a guy who (in his POV) wanted this to happen and almost killed him and his friends (he even tricked Annabeth into lifting the sky) and he has seen what happens to people who trusts him. Logically, it is Annabeth who is in the wrong (She is a kid so, of course, she will make mistakes) and the fact that despite ALL of this, Percy tries to comfort her is really nice but he is absolutely right that she shouldn't defend him (again, she is a kid and Percy doesn't know her history).
Also, they are currently on a quest and an army is trying to destroy the camp, everyone has a much more important fish to fry and not focussing on Luke is a very reasonable thing to do, especially when they have no way to save/kill him so there is no point.
Also, I didn't want to compare their reactions because they are kids and in a VERY stressful situation, but even then, Percy is the reasonable one. They are currently in Annabeth's quest, and She should be a bit more worried about it and their friends who are back in the camp. In his quest, despite losing and hoping for his mother, he put his friends and the quest first even when he had a chance to save her and didn't spend much time sulking despite being younger and very new to this god's business.
Also, We know that Luke and Annabeth are not dating, but Percy believes this, in the book he thinks that she likes him and why shouldn't he, she is the only one caring about him this much (when even Thalia stopped her and told her not to), and he has taken advantage of her care to trap Arthemis in TTC. Annabeth's feelings almost led Atlus to run free because Luke knew and exploited her feelings and yet she still hasn't learnt her lesson. Also, he has seen her ideal dream in Sea of Monsters, where luke is back in the good side with Athena and her dad, she continuously defends him despite all the horrible things he did and still trusts him on some level.
Annabeth's feelings have directly put everyone in danger and they were a weakness that has been exploited. Despite being the daughter of Athena, there was no reason to still cling to Luke (Not that Annabeth is to blame, you cannot expect kids to think like generals and commanders) but Percy is not wrong in being angry or not being able to comfort her.
Let's be real. Percy wouldn't be half as compelling as a character if he didn't do these dumb things. Nevermind realism, it would be boring as Hell to read about a character who always makes the right decision and is always right about everything.
Neither Percy nor Annabeth were completely right or wrong. Annabeth was right when she thought that Luke wasn't completely beyond salvation and Percy was completely justified in not giving Luke the time of day and instead focused on the mission and on the newcomer Rachel.
Percy didn’t do anything wrong here though. He told Annabeth what happened and attempted to comfort her. This isn’t really an example of him being in the wrong. The main thing he did wrong in BoL relationship-wise was not talking about the kiss he and Annabeth had; he brushed it aside thinking she just did it because she thought he was gonna die.
At the same time, Annabeth was clearly not over Luke, and Percy also had damn near fallen in love with Calypso right after that kiss and also was interested by Rachel. People don’t realize that Percy never directly picked Annabeth over Calypso in BoL. He left Calypso’s island because he needed to find Grover and Tyson, finish the mission, save Camp Half-Blood. He thought about Annabeth once or twice, but there were a ton of other factors that pushed him to leave the island.
Maybe that's why Jason was such a boring character to read. Percy had faults, which made him (and his reaction) to be more realistic as a character
I could swear that Jason never got his memories back. No inside jokes with him, no meaningful relationships. No wonder he was so quick to switch over to the Greek Camp after literally spending his entire life at the Roman Camp.
Well, there was the mention of Reyna, but that was about it. Even then, it was more like, "I know you by face, but can't place from where."
Is Jason really a character that’s divisive in the fandom? And ngl yeah Percy is dope for sure regardless if it was realistic or not👍I would’ve enjoyed his character anyway probably.
Divisive is a harsh word, I would say he's more of like dry paint. He had so much potential, but Rick didn’t really do much with his character
Absolutely. If he was Mr. Perfect then he'd be INCREDIBLY boring to read.
Depends id say but I see what you mean of course 👍 I don’t mind regardless so long as it’s enjoyable but I think I have only one in mind atm I enjoyed that’s like that lol haha.
Yeah I feel that 👍 although I’d say it depends too on how it’s done and I only know a few character that are like that I enjoy but yeah I don’t mind so long as it’s enjoyable and also Percy and Ana are cool regardless haha I like em too.
Its in Percy’s favor that we are reading his POV. It gives us more of an insight into his train of thought. Even when he does the wrong thing or doesn't speak up we can see that its not out of malice.
I'll go to my grave saying that Daughter of Wisdom is as close as we will ever get. But you're right.
Well, nobody that Percy showed interest for or had interest in him never tried to kill Annabeth. Not even Reyna.
best friend
What you talking about? Annabeth was never even close to begin his best friend
Having read the passage posted by another commenter, my instinct is that this person in the screenshot is trying to manufacture outrage. DO NOT ENGAGE!!!
People get on TikTok and just yap. Her post makes it seem like Percy was just was leaning on Riptide making issue chat with Rachel while Annabeth is having a mental breakdown. And it’s always gon be fuck Luke 😂
maybe it’s just me but i absolutely love the fact that they’re idiot kids with terrible communication, i find it incredibly amusing, but percy was definitely valid, he’s always considerate of her feelings, even right here he’s still considering her feelings
It's accurate because they're like 14 at this time I think? 14 year olds don't know shit yet, they're figuring it out as they go
Breaking News: teenage boy not the most tactful person on the planet. Back to the studio
Percy:Uh no not the dickhead what do you want me to say
Percy was a lot kinder than I would have been.
Nah it was a perfectly reasonable scene. Percy literally narrates that he didn’t not know how to comfort her - this, compounded with the plethora of other stressors these literal teenagers have been accumulating is a very reasonable explanation of the scene. It’s pretty crazy to read a story without considering the context of events and characters within it. Aside from all the times Luke tried to kill him, Percy is an extremely volatile position at this point - his friend & mentor has become the vessel for the ultimate evil (to this point), and that ultimate evil in Kronos’ main goal is control or kill the child of prophecy who Percy has at least a 33% chance of being lol. So aside from Annabeth, Percy is literally dealing with the weight of potentially saving or destroying the world.
But yeah, sorry Annabeth lol
All I understood was that how much ever luke tried killing Percy Annabeth would still be in love with luke. Percy was completely right to give his attention to Rachel since she's the one who got them out of the situation. Not to mention Annabeth's hypocritical attitude to Rachel, treating her as some peasant and not willing to believe that she can lead the way through the labyrinth yet Percy is supposed to understand her obsession that luke is still good
It's TikTok, their reading comprehension is piss poor.
Wild because he said like 3 sentences to Rachel, and tbh he was completely justified in not comforting her because she was constantly defending Luke ATTEMPTING TO MURDER PERCY. Percy could have told her to go back and ask Kronos if it was him or Luke in control and he would have still been justified.
The op of the video said herself that it's just playing on the fact that they are all teenagers, they are bound to make mistakes. Especially teenage boys, don't know how to effectively deal with their own and others' emotions.
the standards for book mmcs is unreal sometimes lmao. and then other times, booktok and bookstagram will defend actual rapists. i do not get it. 😭
The Battle of the Labyrinth Chapter 17:
Annabeth lifted her head. Her eyes were red from crying. “What… what was wrong with Luke? What did they do to him?”
I told her what I’d seen in the coffin, the way the last piece of Kronos’s spirit had entered Luke’s body when Ethan Nakamura pledged his service.
“No,” Annabeth said. “That’s can’t be true. He couldn’t—”
“He gave himself over to Kronos,” I said. “I’m sorry, Annabeth. But Luke is gone.”
“No!” she insisted. “You saw when Rachel hit him.”
I nodded, looking at Rachel with respect. “You hit the Lord of the Titans in the eye with a blue plastic hairbrush.”
Rachel looked embarrassed. “It was the only thing I had.”
“But you saw,” Annabeth insisted. “When it hit him, just for a second, he was dazed. He came back to his senses.”
“So maybe Kronos wasn’t completely settled in the body, or whatever,” I said. “It doesn’t mean Luke was in control.”
“You want him to be evil, is that it?” Annabeth yelled. “You didn’t know him before, Percy. I did!”
“What is it with you?” I snapped. “Why do you keep defending him?”
“Whoa, you two,” Rachel said. “Knock it off.”
Annabeth turned on her. “Stay out of it, mortal girl! If it wasn’t for you…”
Whatever she was going to say, her voice broke. She put her head down again and sobbed miserably. I wanted to comfort her, but I didn’t know how. I still felt stunned, like Kronos’s time-slow effect had affected my brain. I just couldn’t comprehend what I’d seen. Kronos was alive. He was armed. And the end of the world was probably close at hand.
“We have to keep moving,” Nico said. “He’ll send monsters after us.”
Nobody was in any shape to run, but Nico was right. I hauled myself up and helped Rachel to her feet.
“You did good back there,” I told her.
She managed a weak smile. “Yeah, well. I didn’t want you to die.” She blushed. “I mean… just because, you know. You owe me too many favors. How am I going to collect if you die?”
I knelt next to Annabeth. “Hey, I’m sorry. We need to move.”
“I know,” she said. “I’m… I’m all right.”
She was clearly not all right. But she got to her feet, and we started straggling through the Labyrinth again.
“Back to New York,” I said. “Rachel, can you—”
