Is it possible to relieve gas with a tube inserted in the rectum?

First off, I love that this post is tagged "sexuality and gender". Secondly, have you spoken to a doctor about this? Getting gas on occasion is normal, getting gas that's so painful and uncomfortable you're considering sleeping with a tube jammed up your ass is not. It's almost certainly a symptom of an underlying condition.

Keep in mind that the rectum likes to swallow things and inserting something into it that wasn’t designed to go into it is a good way to get an embarrassing ER visit. It would be much safer to go for a jog or do jumping jacks.

The bigger question is why you have this issue in the first place. It’s always a good idea to talk to a doctor about any digestive issues.

I'm a Nurse, people may laugh, but we use Rectal tubes at work to relieve gas for residents that are bed ridden. Since they didn't move around much, gas trends to accumulate in their bowels.

However, it sounds life you are really suffering. Have you talked to a dietician, nutritionist, gastroenterologist, etc about what's going on? Some simple changes in your diet could make a big difference for you.

I'd recommend looking at your lifestyle and diet and whatnot before considering anything out of the ordinary to stop the misery.

Do you drink a lot of carbonated drinks for example? or do you eat a tonne of fibre heavy foods? There are tonnes of things that can cause it, but because it sounds like it's persistent it's most likely something that is consistently currently part of your life in some way.

Failing that, go see a doctor. They can generally point you in the right direction and can also diagnose any potential issue you may have that is causing it.

Please, don't put anything rigid into your rectum. Also, if it has a small diameter without wide base, you can lost it inside. You don't want to have this conversation with a paramedic or a nurse, right? Try to massage your abdomen clockwise, get a hot-water bottle or warm bath.

This may sound silly but, you know that 'bicycle' motion you can do with babies legs for gas/bowel stuff, it works on adults too! You can also try the yoga pose called 'child's pose'. I hope you find relief OP, that sounds painful.

I personally find it annoying when people give health advice when I've asked some other question, but here I am anyway —I'm sorry!— I discovered that my digestive system had some trouble with processing sorbitol, so I quit being a frequent gum chewer and the gases drastically went down. Sounds like a food allergy/intolerance. Maybe lactose, chicory root (always check the labels for this demon) , cruciferous veggies, even grains and alcohol. See a doctor ASAP. This is fixable. Also keep up with regular colonoscopies.

Make sure you aren’t getting celiacs. That’s the one thing that’ll make you gassy that you can’t ignore because it will fuck up your guts permanently.

My fiancée (BF at the time) had an appendectomy and the worst gas of his life resulted from the procedure. Have you seen a doctor about this? It sounds similar to what I experienced before having my gallbladder out. The pain was awful and i thought it was just gas too. Since having it taken out it has all gone away.

Yes, you can do this. There is a special device for it. The procedure is sometimes done for babies or the elderly/incontinent.

Something else that may help is massaging your stomach where the small intestines meets the large intestines.

Here’s how:

1.) Place your hand on the left side of your body, underneath the ribs and aligned with the nipple. 2.) Using light to medium pressure, massage in a clockwise circle motion by fanning out your fingers/hand. This stimulates the intestines. It can help with gas, constipation, helping to pass diarrhea, and stimulating a bowel movement to happen. It can work within minutes.

Since you mention it's bad at night, I wonder if you use a CPAP machine? My friend uses one and gets filled with air and farts a lot during the night and morning and it doesn't smell as you said. Worth mentioning to the doc regardless

Maybe you have GERD or some other intestinal problem, or a food allergy? Or a bad mix of gut bacteria or a bad diet.

Do some buns up. On hands and knees, lower your head, shoulders, and arms until your bum is raised. Bubble bubble ahhhh. Also, go see a doctor!

I recommend a 72 hour fast. I’ve had very similar gut problems, with gastritis only happening recently. I kept getting bloated every time I had bread, tomatoes, beer, etc. I tried to completely stop my trigger foods for a couple weeks, then did the fast. 72 hours is a long time so I had liquid iv every day, a spoon full of of MCT oil at the end of the fast. Waited an hour and had some bone broth. Then hours later started eating very lightly.

I have noticed a massive reduction in the painful gas and bloating. I have also started eating some kind of fermented vegetable every day. I think the fast made the gut rested and happy, then the fermented vegetables (and peppers) have killed a lot of bad bacteria letting the system clean out and reset.

Damn dude, start exercising more, stop eating fast food and seriously go see a doctor. It's not normal to fart so much you can't sleep you got something going on.

Shoving a snorkel up your clacker should be a last resort type thing and 100% should make you think to go to the doctor rather than entertaining that idea.

Yes but the only time I've seen it was for a medical procedure. I had one patient have this in the ICU. I can't remember what condition he had but it was some GI condition that made him produce excessive amounts of gas and putting the tube in somehow helped some of it get out.

HOWEVER I don't recommend just sticking a random tube up there.The rectum connects to your bowels. Sticking anything up there that's not meant to be up there can be dangerous. Plenty of people come to the ED with objects lost up their ass, and if you put something long enough up there you could perforate something and a perfed bowel can make you go septic and die. If there is truly a product for this purpose, make sure you read the instructions and follow them carefully.

one of my favorite nonpharmacologic ways to relieve gas is to do something like a downward dog pose—or anything that elevates your butt higher than the rest of you. Gas is air, and air rises.

Also, sometimes it can feel like gas but might be more serious. So obviously consider that.

Head on over to r/ibs and we can give suggestions. Its a normal occurance for most of us. Stretching, moving around, and just laying down seem to help me. You could do the bicycle legs and then stretch the legs out then pull them to chest. This is done for babies and literally works a lot.

In addition to going to a doctor to get checked make a list of any known foods you have this reaction with it'll help them determine what in the foods could be the most likely cause like dairy, gluten, etc.

Technically yes, if gas was the only issue. This can be seen in conditions like Olgilvie Syndrome. In that case there is little to no stool and distention of the large bowel is due to gas and insertion of a rectal tube does help. These tubes are much larger than a straw.

You definitely need a GI evaluation and maybe abdominal imaging. Get with your PCP for a GI referral.

So, funny story. I was in a terrible car accident and my entire abdominal core just wasn't working. I couldn't flex to push out trapped gas. It got so painful that I ended up massaging my stomach while inserting the end of a straw up my butt and next thing you know, I heard whistling noises!

No. A rigid tube wouldn't go anywhere useful. What might help is an enema. You can get an enema kit at a medical supply store. Whether it's a do it yourself kind of thing, I wouldn't care to speculate.

Unless the gas is trapped in your rectum no. Try yoga to help things move.

I farting does not relieve pressure it means gas is still trapped in the intestine before the rectum so even if you insert a tube in the rectum it does nothing because gas is not there yet.

Yes. In hospital I would use an enema can, with about a third filled with warm water. The water is only there to prevent air going in. The water won't go in you as long as it's held below your rectum. Set it lower than your body, and the gas should come out the tube and make bubbles in the water.

A heating pad on low might provide comfort. A warm bath even a warm drink sometimes helps.

If this is happening frequently you most likely have become sensitive to something in your diet. Most probabke: milk products. Also possible- try reducing gas forming foods for a while, see if that helps.

I've definitely had some gas issues in my time, and it was mainly diet related. Eating lots of processed carbs will make me gassy, especially corn. I take digestive enzymes with my meals now, and that helps me greatly. You can get them cheaply at the grocery store/Amazon. You may want to try an elimination diet like Whole30 to see what foods are making you so gassy.

Rectal tubes exist for this purpose, but they’re really uncomfortable and usually only placed when the abdomen is very very distended.

Do you know which foods instigate it? Dairy, gluten, corn? If you know, it’s going to make your life so much easier to just seriously avoid them all the time. I have quite a few foods i used to eat even though i knew i would suffer the consequences. I felt so much better in every way after finally cutting them out. If you're not sure, get an allergy test.

I was having issues a few weeks ago at work and my intestines getting into a figurative knot. It was either the frozen vegetables or the yogurt I was eating. So, at least for now I am stopping eating that brand of yogurt and I haven't had that issue again

The yoga pose " happy baby" will be your best friend. I do it every night before bed. I'm vegan, i know the fart symphony. The tube wouldn't help, it comes from your bowels so......A good probiotic like Align also, and please, clean up your diet, STOP eating all triggering food. A low FODMAP diet will also help you identifying those and will make your life better, trust me. It's worth doing. I know the foods i can't eat anymore and i never slip up no matter what. If i fart a lot in my case, it's because i ate too fast, or that i am stressed. Menopause increases those too. I drink a mint tea before each meal as well, and i wake up with a glass of warm lemon water on an empty stomach. I also massage my belly in clockwork motion 10 minutes before i wake up, quiet in bed.
