It is very common for runners to double in the 100/200 (e.g Michael Johnson, Usain Bolt, Noah Lyles). It is also not uncommon for runners to do the 1500/5000 double or 800/1500 or 5000/10000. You don't see 200/800 or 800/5000 because these require different energy pathways and builds.

Most swimmers specialize in a stroke plus sprints or distance. There are exceptional swimmers who are world class in two events (eg Phelps in fly and free, Hosszu in back and fly, and Lochte in back and free) but most swimmers don't attain that level of mastery.

Anyone who hates those from a different political party have been brainwashed by the leaders of that party and their acolytes. It is in their interest to make you angry and hate the other party, as this makes you a more reliable voter. If I hate anyone, it's these people.

Good listings here:

Plus, Natick has TCANN, Trustees of Reservations has lots of events at their properties, Boston Area Coffeehouse Association has listings of folk concerts, there are lots of community theater organizations, and you can find a lot of local hikes on outdoors.org. If you run, find a local running club. If you cycle, find a local cycling club

Night hikes are awesome. I like to go to high points where I can see the distant city skyline lit up. It's easier to see at night than during the day. I'll also go out to look at stars that are hard to see with all the lighting that suburbanites use at their houses. And it's really fun to listen for owls in the woods. In the winter it's really special to go out when there's a full moon and snow on the ground.

It took me a while to understand what this article is saying. This paragraph is an incomprehensible mess, and I got stuck here

In an effort she calls "Books Not Bans," she sends titles about queer history, sexuality, romance and more — many of which are increasingly hard to come by in the face of a rapidly growing movement by conservative advocacy groups and lawmakers to ban them from public schools and libraries.

What she's doing is donating banned books to LGBTQ+ friendly places in cities/states where conservatives have imposed bans in public schools and libraries. That's admirable. It would have been a better article with some editing

Besides the fact that I disagree with violations of the first amendment, teachers are qualified to teach certain subjects. Are art teachers required to teach pre-calc? Are history teachers required to teach Chemistry? If this were being done for legitimate educational reasons, shouldn't they be hiring people with degrees in theology or other relevant subjects to teach this?

Ok. My question is rhetorical, of course, because this isn't being done for legitimate educational reasons. It's pandering and a distraction from the abysmal public education system in Oklahoma

No hike with flume slide is appropriate for beginner backpackers. Period.

My AMC chapter offers a beginner backpack trip that goes up liberty springs to the tentsite. We pitch tents, and then proceed with day packs to Liberty, and if the group feels good, to Flume, and back. Eat dinner, go to sleep. Those who are interested wake up before dawn and watch the sunrise from Liberty. Then we pack up and go home.

There was a table where you could go to show your number and pick up the pie. They had a big freezer truck at the race. It was in New England, so it was rather cool outside.

The backpack and sweatshirt were from other races, but I'll keep that strategy in mind the next time I do a race with that kind of SWAG. Using SWAG to carry SWAG home would be meta

The best way to improve your cardio for swimming is by swimming. If you have the option of swimming or running, then swim. Runners often benefit from substituting swimming for running because running is high impact, but the opposite is not beneficial.

Now, running does have the advantage of convenience. It you're travelling or can't get to the pool during open hours, it's nice to have running as a backup, since it will benefit your swimming more than sitting on your couch. Also, if you are not trying to reach the highest levels of competitive swimming, it's fun to mix things up.

In the US, every state has its own laws. We as cyclists have an obligation to know and follow the laws.

In Massachusetts, cyclists indeed have to follow road rules:

Bicyclists have the right to use all public ways in this state except limited access or express state highways where signs specifically prohibiting bicycles have been posted. When riding on public ways, bicyclists must obey the same basic traffic laws and regulations that apply to motor vehicle operators

We also can take the lane

You can use the full lane anywhere, anytime, and on any street (except limited access or express state highways where signs specifically prohibiting bicycles have been posted), even if there is a bike lane

I take advantage of this when I feel it's not safe to ride in the shoulder. In general, it's not prudent to upset someone in a 2000 pound vehicle when you're on a 20 pound bike. Righteous indignation doesn't keep you safe

I'm 61.

I think the people who are criticizing age are criticizing Biden. Trump is a cult figure, and his age doesn't matter to those in his cult.

Biden is too old. Anyone who does vote for him will be voting for the party. But the party needs a standard bearer who will draw people to the voting booth. And that person has to be someone younger. He is being selfish and doing a disservice to the people who support socially progressive causes.

Running is easier to do if you travel for work. If that's the case you should do enough running that you don't hurt yourself when you run on travel.

If that's not a concern, you're better off cycling

Unless it's taught from an objective secular perspective, itis religious instruction. That means such things as acknowledging that the Biblical stories of creation are not supported by science and are rejected by nearly all scientists, and that virtually all historians deny the historicity of the Noah's Ark, tower of Babel, and Exodus stories (among others) as written in the Bible. It should address the controversies over teaching the Bible or any other religious text at all in public schools in the context of the first amendment.

Distributism is based on Catholic Social teaching, but it is not Catholic teaching. The Catholic Church is unqualfied to compare economic systems on their efficiency or their ability to improve overall prosperity.

I started yoga at 58 to help me recover from a herniated disk. I have seen remarkable improvement in all aspects of my life.

Now, I have to be frank about those noises. I'm 61. I do long hikes in the mountains and compete in long trail races. I haven't finished lower than second place in my age group all year, and I'm faster than most people a lot younger than me. Yoga has improved my posture and flexibility beyond what I ever imagined. But ... I still make noises when I bend over to pick something up or get out of my car after a long drive. I have arthritis in my spine that's consistent with what's expected of someone my age, and the rest of my body isn't so young. I embrace those noises.

A cheap kickboard costs somewhere in the range of $10-15. I found it helpful for improving my kick, and for learning fly. It's one of the cheapest pieces of swim gear you can buy, and it will last forever.

I learned at 50. I can do all of the competitive strokes (fly, back, breast, and front crawl/free), and turns (flip for free and back, open for breast and fly). I have competed in open water events up to 5K, and in every stroke (including IM) at masters meets. You're 10 years ahead of my schedule
