I also work in a museum and I disagree. Looks natural to me. I have found a couple of these on excavations and one still had roots wrapped around like this that had made the same ingravings. Curious to hear if your friend has a parallel to this that I can look up.
Its a rock that has had roots grow around it. I’m an archaeologist and have found a couple of these.
