Costco has chicken thighs for the same or almost the same as their drumsticks, $0.99-1.49/lb. Pork loin is usually $1.79/lb, tenderloin 2.19/lb tonight. Supermarkets often have decent sales on "London broil" (top round). Pork "picnic" shoulder is often cheaper than country ribs/Boston butt.
Edit: keep in mind that the $4/lb brisket is a whole "packer" brisket and has a significant amount of fat. It makes great tallow, but you need to consider trim in your cost calculation.
Yes, definitely. They need cams after a while, but if you use the correct oil it takes many many thousands of miles. But they have good internals.
You should look for an 05-06 then, so you can get the DSG. The PD engines in those are good engines, too.
I would hold out for a manual transmission, personally.
Does everything pretty much work? Air conditioning? How are the tires? Brakes? How's the headliner? All those things can add up quickly on a 21 year old car.
If it's in good condition, it's probably worth the asking. You can always start gathering parts for a 5-speed swap while driving the slushbox.
Auto Trans for these are pretty meh. DSG started to be a available in 05 for the tdi, this one is a slushbox.
Biodiesel quality can vary quite a bit. Pop the cover off the quantity adjuster housing and check to see how it looks in general. If there's any sign of corrosion/gunking, it'll need a pump sooner rather than later and possibly injectors.
You'll want to budget for a timing belt unless it comes with documentation of a recent change.
