Wife said to me today.. we should get a smoker and have some mates over for a bbq. I don't know a thing about smokers so I thought I would as you lot, as this seems to be a pretty good community of people.

I have a couple of KBQ's and love them. They do burn up a lot of wood, but the results are always great. I've also been using a 22in Weber Smokey Mountain a lot this year, and have come to the opinion that it's a great starting smoker that is capable of world-class results.
Personally, I am not a huge fan of pellet grills—although I agree with some earlier comments that Yoders are incredibly well built and will likely make most folks very happy. Pellets are convenient, but I find the smoke produced from is very light on flavor because pellets burn uniformly hot compared to larger chunks of wood where there is a bigger temperature gradient through the wood, so you end up with a less complete combustion of the volatiles generated. This said, I would rather have the average barbecue produced on a pellet smoker than the average barbecue produced on a less-automated smoker—it's hard to produce awful barbecue on a pellet smoker.
