My first name is fucking weird. Think of a very basic and common white girl name with a random ass R thrown in there. I’m not debating that one.
My middle name however, I’ve always liked. But now I’m wondering if it’s a tragedeigh. It’s Marcae, pronounced “mar-say.” My dad really loved the count of monte cristo, and the town in the story is Marseille. I guess that’s what inspired it.

When a “c” comes befor an “a” it tends to get pronounced like “k”. So, right off the bat I thought your middle name was some variation on “Mary-Kay.” Like the cosmetics brand.

I knew it would be pronounced like Marseilles right away but I’m also proficient in french and several other latin-root languages, and some assorted others, so maybe I’m at a phonetic advantage.
In most romance languages (and even English) “ca” is pronounced as “ka” but “ce” is pronounced like the “ce” in “celery”, which is why French uses the C cedilla (c with a squiggle below it) and Spanish turns their C into a Z before o, a, and u if they want to retain a soft “s” sound.
In all of these languages “marcae” would carry a hard K sound.
Alternate spellings like “marcei”, “marsei”, or “marsay” would be clearer in all of these languages.

I think Marcae is not an ugly name at all, and doesn’t seem far off from other names like Rae, Marcia, or Celia …easily pronounced (IMO) …well I suppose some would say “Markay” … but oh well. I could see it as a first name too, but as a middle name it’s not going to be much of a problem, usually middle names aren’t so much a part of the picture , you can choose to just gave the first initial as part of your signature, or just leave it out all together. IMO not a tragedeigh, but a harmonious sounding name .

Could have just been done with the original spelling. Anyone who needs to know your middle name is going to ask for the spelling anyway. Anyone who thinks they're smart and knows how to spell it, you're gonna have to correct. But otherwise I don't hate it. It reads as it sounds which is better than most things that come up here.
