Whoops, tried to reply to you but it’s above this. Cheers
We recently changed the posting guidelines, you'll see a lot more OC
Nice! Thanks
Is only oc allowed now?
New users are limited to OC, but after a handful of posts, you're able to post whatever you like.
Great update to the rules! This is a game changer, hopefully it reinvigorates the sub. Thanks for listening to the will of the people; not many subs/mods do that.
The mods are just people, we never wanted a trash sub, figuring out rules/enforcement that works and is consistent and fair is its own challenge.
I believe it. The fact that you're actually passionate enough about the sub to keep adapting, despite being volunteers, is admirable. Excited to see how the new rule change affects quality and peoples' responses to posts.
Then again... we are still on reddit; I await the "change the rules back to how they were!" comments with popcorn in hand, lol. Seriously though, thanks for giving a damn. Hope it makes things better for everyone.
Fingers crossed!
It's actually really strange many photographers don't flock to this sub. Especially since you see so many of the same ones on the photography subs.
What are some good photography subs?
Great question. There's honestly so many so it really just depends on what you're in to. I'll list some of my favs. If anyone else has some recommendations I'm all ears
BTS:
/r/itookapicture would be one of the obvious ones
/r/liminalspace is great for something different
/r/thenightfeeling has some great stuff too
Check out r/streetphotography and r/fujifilm
Edit: I specify fujifilm because it's one of the brands that OP shot with, and it's quite popular for street photography.
Completely agree.
/r/analog is great.
what do you mean the 259285th political picture is not actually a good submission?
I think /r/photographs is the most active sub that people post their stuff to (including myself). The camera-manufacturer specific subs also get a bunch of good stuff.
Pretty sure r/itookapicture is the biggest real photography sub
This hobby sounds like a setup for a Liam Neeson movie after your camera captures something it’s not supposed to see.
This Summer Liam Neeson in Capture
“I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have is a Nikon camera. I love to take a photograph. So mama, don't take my Kodachrome away.”
I read that in Neeson's voice. Haha
"I know you have money. Give it to me."
"F! 2!
He has a very particular set of skills. Skills he has acquired over a very long photography career.
Nice, recognized the Poolbeg Lighthouse in Dublin straight away. That's a good walk. In 2016 an Ingress player (augmented reality game) fell off there and drowned after midnight.
I mean, he has taken pictures, so why not just call it “Taken”.
Might get confused with a similarly titled Liam Neeson movie
Oh right. Schindlers List.
"Look at this photograph"
Liam Neeson stars in a whole knew take on Taken; no city is safe from his midnight camera.
The Midnight Meat Train is exactly this.
I would totally watch it.
Blowup, 1966.
That's the plot of Blow Up!
Then there is the movie Blow Out where the guy records something he wasn’t supposed to hear.
Hmmmm let's look at this from a different perspective. A person secretly photographs unaware bystanders in the dead of night without their permission.
Liam Neesons! https://youtu.be/hhfHu6IHBiI
Ah I recognize Singapore from the typical cab interior
Thanks
No problem
Recognised Dublin straight away. The pub and the lighthouse pier. I know the pier I walk there all the time with my dog it’s an amazing place. Love the snaps
That escalator shot is not in Dublin , was initially confused and thought they all were. At least number 5 of the pub is. Also fantastic photography - would love to see more of this type taken around Dublin. Most just take the same shots of hapenny bridge or temple bar
Good stuff lad!
Hey man, I'm amazed by #5, do you care to add some details for me, like the city or what was your day like in that particular city. If you can't that's cool too, thanks for sharing this
I recognized South Wall; I've done some sunset photography from there before. But I don't think I'd dare to go there at midnight, unless I rented a car and parked it right at the beginning of the pier.
Escalator is a Hamburg U-Bahn station. Simple centre/island metro platform with no ticket barriers.
Fantastic atmosphere! Looks straight out of a blade runner movie.
These are great. If you had to recommend one small camera to take with you, which would you recommend? Getting a bit tired of the limitations of a phone camera, even a good one (I've got the Pixel 6 Pro).
Not OP but IMO the best carry with you, fixed lens do it all camera for sale right now is the X100V. Beautiful images, great colors, JPEGs look fantastic with pretty much no editing, sharp lens, small form factor, good looks and reasonably priced at $1400 and worth every penny. That’d be my recommendation. Here’s a great video you might be interested in watching
Just be careful man. The saying "nothing good happens after midnight" seems to be more true every day. And carrying around a $2k camera invites trouble.
Hmm, you know... we can arrange a lil somethin somethin and share some of the somethin somethin if you can catch my somethin somethin
You sigh, I'll unzip
starts filming
First thing I thought reading the title was “tell me you’re a man without telling me you’re a man.”
Awesome pictures!
I know, and that's fucked up. I also know there are women who go out and do work like this, but it's a different experience.
And the pictures are spectacular. I would hang the whole series on my wall, and be very proud.
Same same, sister. If I'm in a city I can't concentrate at what I'm seeing through the lens unless I've got someone watching my back.
I mostly notice it because I feel guilty dragging them all over the place then they are just twidding their thumbs while I'm waiting for stuff to fall into place for the shot I've envisioned.
It's not more true every day though?
How the hell do I get good looking night shots like this on an x100t, the camera was a gift. I’m still learning how to use it
I always shoot in raw and have been using VSCO for processing but it just feels like the camera isn’t the best choice for low light conditions, I’ll keep playing with it though
🙏 thanks I don’t know why I’ve been avoiding Lightroom especially since I already had it. The mobile version already beat VSCO for me and I know there’s more if I actually use my desktop.
Thanks again please keep sharing your photos
If this was the US it would read
Baltimore - shot with a 9mm
Philly - shot with a .45
Chicago - shot with a .38
Detroit - stabbed with a buck knife
Dat compositon, especially the one with the umbrella.
FWIW, for cab rides (esp Tuk Tuks and the like), if technically possible I like to drag the shutter some to blur the background, gives more motion feeling to it.
God I can’t wait to start traveling again.
Ah I recognize none of these cities.
You mean this feeling isn't exclusive to me??? Sometimes I walk for miles from night to morning when I get this feeling, and when I don't satisfy it, it almost physically hurts
That's because you're actually a vampire and the matrix can't quite suppress the instinct of your blood curse.
In my early 20s I had jobs that put out and about before or after work in those hours where the rest of city slept. I have fond memories of that time but also remember feeling pretty empty and alone. For a few moments year I get to see the city like that again and it feels comfortable and uneasy at the same time.
I used to yearn to do this. Guess why I didn't feel safe scratching that itch.
I'm glad you got to do it, though. And I appreciate your comment - makes me feel less weird for having the almost-unbearable compulsion.
Definitely not the only one.
/r/liminalspace too
Yo homie - aren’t you tired AF in the meetings the next day?!
I find the high of a good experience can carry me through a sleep deprived work day
Hell yeah. And the sources of light arent bad either in the sense that it still adds a good amount of light to the subjects. Is your lens super wide? Or is it a mixture of both wide and slow shutter?
Have you ever used Tamron's stabilized f1.8 lenses? They're available in 35, 45, and 85mm IIRC and they're amazing for unstaged night shots like these.
How's the autofocus on the x100t?
With my 5d mk2, shooting wide open like that, I always find myself annoyed with the performance.
Love it. The wide open lens along with the environment lighting adds the right amount of grit to your photo series. Makes me want to dust off my DSLR.
Anyone without any idea about aperture, DOF, shutter speed, or exposure will say you added a filter post process.
edited the unnecessary 5 AM morning rant
Do you have a 500px site? I've been so out of the hobby that I no longer know what's currently relevant. That or I'm getting too old.
Bold moves posting photography pictures on r/pics
Haven't really looked to much interest in photography as an art but reckon I will now. Definately got a point of difference with these shots my man
Love this.
Along those lines, do you intentionally use clarity to make it less "real" to avoid the idea that your pictures are art or not?
Everything should be allowed. To me, post-processing is about emphasizing how the scene felt to be in, to see, in real life. I’ve never thought it to be about simply making a photo look better.
And also what is in your Lightroom when you click some more buttons 😂
Awesome advice. I'll always remember it succinctly.
I wanna do this so bad but I am a woman lol
I was thinking the same thing. :( I'd love to be able to do something like this.
What is your job man?
Great eye. Those are really nice shots.
Great shots! I plan on doing this when I get to NYC later this year
Brilliant composition. My favorite is the lady in the window.
The use of negative space chefs kiss
Splendid, but for real, be careful out there OP
When you're in Mexico City or Rio, you might wanna stay inside after dark...
I have trouble staying up past 9:30
Every one of these shots is dripping with atmosphere, great work and steady hands!!
Lots of subtle retouching on these shots, people don't realize the time it takes to elevate a raw photo into something that is art worthy
Congrats on the work
Next week on the news
"Late night photographer found dead with his anus blown out"
Beautiful!
Amazing photos - great art indeed. You are very talented.
Tell me you're a man without telling me you're a man
My first thought as well. Must be nice to be able to just go out after midnight alone in some city. It's hard for me to even imagine being able to do that.
No woman I've ever met would go out alone at night in an unknown city.
He literally photographed a woman
It's amazing how many women now are looking for this fight. You didn't say anything that wasn't accurate. As a woman I'm out at night a decent amount, I know damn well what to avoid and what to do to keep myself as safe as possible. Just because the world should be different doesn't mean you should act as though it already is. You have to live in the world that you live in and be smart about it. I had the same thought when I read that you go out at midnight and take pictures, "must be nice to be a man," but I definitely don't feel hostile about it. It wasn't your fault you were born a man nor is it specifically your fault that it's more dangerous for women at night. It's also not like you're not taking on risk being out at midnight with expensive equipment. Just a different kind of possible danger.
I don’t think the original comment was hostile, just an observation. (Which you had, I had, and I’m sure multiple others had when seeing this post.)
My exact first thought as well. Must be nice to be a man and be able to go out after midnight...
My first thought was who has the energy on a business trip, after all the travel, meetings, etc.,to be out running around taking pictures after midnight, lol.
Just came here to leave the same comment…
I would LOVE to see your post processing techniques. The mood is wonderfully established in these.
It's always something about the night time.
Nice, only in my dreams
You take rad pictures
Batman...
Plz don't do this in New Orleans
Ha! One of the shots in Dublin is right around the corner from a friend's flat. The light is wild, as the Pub (H Mathews) looks rundown to the point of shameful in daylight, and I think is now permanently closed, but in your shot is like a carefully curated set for a classy noir.
These are killer. How can I get one???
I looooove
Wow. Awesome work. Ever thought of doing it for money?
Nice, recognized the Poolbeg Lighthouse in Dublin straight away. That's a good walk. In 2016 an Ingress player (augmented reality game) fell off there and drowned after midnight.
if “travel noire” is not already its own aesthetic thing, it should be. These are absolutely great!
Plot twist: op is a photographer and his "business travel" is to take these pictures...
Nice work!
Amazing! The pub shot(Dublin?) Was incredible. I'd put that up in a basement speakeasy.
You are talented dude!
Another compliment here, I absolutely love all of these. I can sort of "feel" each one, they all look like part of some opening credits establishing shots. Hope to see more soon!
They’re all really good, but I love the feel of the first one!
Are you u/inkvine83, God of perfect, nostalgic photographs ?
One of my favourite things to do in cities when I travel (live in a small tropical island) is seeing the vast array of crazy people that always come out at nights. My gf hates it because whenever I hear some crackhead screaming I’m drawn to it. Sad I know but god damn do I get curious. I’m in DC right now and a bit dissapointed it’s nothing like NYC. That being said I have yet to venture to LA. Hear that’s bad.
I always thought... if I were to ever pursue photography, these are the exact kinds of images i would aspire too.
I am not, and will never be, a photographer. I am, however , a (hobbyist) writer, and these images are the kinds that inspire stories. Beautiful.
Yeah I'm going to need a lot more of those awesome pictures.
Damn those look awesome. Something about them makes them look edited or something. I think it's the lighting, but it almost looks like a filter is on all of them is except the one where your in a car.
It's neat because you capture that quiet that most cities have late at night.
Speaking as a professional, these are professional level. Very nice work. Great uses of light and composition.
Looks like it's right out of a movie! BEAUTY!
Do you just use your iPhone?
this looks like some postapocaliptic stuff right there
This is amazing! Do you have an Instagram or something I could follow? I'd love to see more of your photos.
These are awesome, great work mate
Sick shots, holy moly. The first one is straight out of Max Payne.
LOVE THESE. You are incredibly talented. Keep up the brilliant work, OP!
Wow dude. This seems like a great hobby and a great way to see the city. I’ll try it on my next travel. Also, nice photos, thank you for sharing
Moody, thoughtful, memorable
Fantastic!
I hope they send you to safe cities to go out at night in
I was just thinking this. As a woman, I’m not sure I’d feel safe going out alone after midnight to take photos in strange cities.
Fantastic photos, the one of the pub Mathews was an unexpected trip down memory lane. My Granddad's regular watering hole. I can still smell the lounge!
Max Payne. Roscoe Street Station. To make any kind of sense, I need to go back to three years ago. The night the pain started.
You’re obviously very gifted at this
Must be nice being a man
Try it out in Compton
Great stuff!
good timing... great shot... congrats!
I'm usually not a fan of city photography because most of it is a bit repetitious, but these are really great shots. Nice work!
Hauntingly beautiful. I love your sense of atmosphere and framing. I live out in a forest now but these reminded me of so many different places. I don't think I've been to a single city represented, but I feel like I could have been in any of those scenes at least once in my life.
Too bad there aren’t more posts like this in the Pics sub. This is what I thought it would be when I subscribed.
