It's not inexpensive, it's completely free. A lot of companies are scammy about it and try to trick you into thinking you need to pay for legal services, but you can just do it at home for free.
When I went in to change the name on my bank account the bank-person said “I just need to get this checked because there’s no stamp, so you could have just typed this up yourself at home” and looked extremely shocked when I explained that I did and that’s legal 😂 maybe they were new because the manager barely looked over it and agreed to the name change.
I adopted my stepdaughter in the US. It's easier to change your name as a minor because you won't have entered contracts, etc you're trying to get away from. They said if you're an adult you have to put a notice in the newspaper or some goofy shit.
The whole process was pretty painless realty. I had to get a background check and fingerprinted which was $80-100 iirc. Everything else was no biggie, like $10-20 filing fee, birth certificate, and social security card.
Yup, have to run your name in the paper a month and have a court date in case anyone wants to contest you changing your name. Did mine in ‘03. On the very last step I was informed of a much cheaper process that I wish I had been informed of before going through everything. There is such a thing as adult adoption apparently. At least at that time in California.
Think grand total cost me like $600-$700 when everything was done

I lost my Mom 10 years ago. Dad remarried pretty quickly (don’t blame him, he’s not the single type). I have an older Brother, but he never was one/we are estranged.
My older (step) sister, who I look up to, introduced me to her friends simply as “My Brother” the other day.
I was tearing up behind my sunglasses (30 y/o M and not the type to), and it really hit me. The simple drop of the “step” meant the world to me right then and there.

No but seriously you’d be surprised how many screenwriters don’t have the fundamental skills of writing down these days, texting and online comment platforms like Reddit and Twitter have ruined all future generations on this stuff. I hear it from hiring managers in every industry too, it’s worse in non-communications jobs but the fact that it’s affected the new standards for these too is a little sad to me as a Journalism major (when I started college the little AP style book was Bible; now that social media brought the “everyone’s a journalist” shift though I’m ending college with much different (lower) standards for writing).
And for screenwriters, once you get successful enough you have Writers Assistants who do all of the actual writing things down, while head writers of TV shows have literally just become “ideas people” who sit around talking all day in a writers room and don’t even have to know how to write anymore.
Also even before you become successful, Final Draft the script-writing software has spellcheck, grammar check and auto-formatting. And we all grew up on Microsoft Office/Word in school, so we start off having a lot of the meticulous work done for us from the very beginning.
I’m not even 30 and I sound like such an old man lol, it’s weird being right on the turning point of smart phones and social media where we learned how to live both ways.

I told my friend I’m worry often about messing up as a parent. He told me parents have been messing up their kids for thousands of years. Made me feel a lot better.

The best part is that you don't have to if you don't want to! You can also change your surname to something totally different (my husband has a boring name and mine is constantly misspelled, so we're both going to change our last names to something cool like Fox lol!)
And genuinely, if someone wants to make you feel bad or selfish or [insert nasty insult] because you don't want to change your name to theirs, that IS grounds to dump their ass and don't EVER let anyone tell you otherwise. The only reason to care that much about it is because they see you as their property and they're angry that their property isn't blindly obeying them. If someone tries to say some shit like "It's tradition so that means you have to" just ask "Why?" and keep asking why until they either a) realize they're being a dumbass for supporting a sexist tradition or b) they reveal that they ARE sexist and that's why they support viewing women as their husband's property.
I didn't want my ex to change her name when we got married, it just seemed weird and possessive to me, and I knew her by her name already, why would I have wanted her to change that?

This is all I want in life. I'll never say it out loud, but it truly is. I have 3 stepkids, 2 boys and a girl. They were 2, 4, and 7 when I came into their life. Bio dad isn't around and wasn't really around before I came into the picture either. We got engaged, but never really planned to marry, but then covid hit and I guess the boredom got to my wife and mom so they started planning a wedding, lol.
My wife didn't want to deal with the hassle of changing names and documents for 4 people (and I don't blame her one bit.) So now I'm just waiting to see if this will happen. It's only been 7 years, so they're still all too young to do it on their own, but it's definitely at the top of my wish list!
