You arenβt the only one
But what about to Tibet??
For $1500 and 6 months, I could probably build a slightly crappier version.
These are the conclusions I too am finally starting to reach about my DIY abilities.
We need Ali express . Help us Ali you're our only hope π
Available now: the Tartarus table!
Eh, more like $3,000 and 2 years.
Depends. Are we counting the purchase of some new tools that I probably don't need in that final price, or do those get distributed across the entire shop?
I looked it up a few years ago. It's basically and arm with a magnet and an Arduino dragging the ball around a table with sand on it. Pretty simple. I think you can even buy the arm/magnet thing and build it yourself.
It also seems best as part of a timelapse like this one rather than in person too.
It's more of a, "come back to the table hours later and it has a different pattern," kind of a thing. Not really something so sit and watch.
You're not gonna tell me what to do with my $1,200 table.
Not with that attitude.

I think they're actually much cooler in person. They're supposed to be meditative. You can watch it for a few minutes as the pattern slowly changes and reflect on impermanence or whatever.
reflect on the impermanence of the 1200 dollars you spent on it
When I did travel work I knew people who would blow that much in a weekend or two just at bars and strip clubs. $1200 is really not that much for a good piece of furniture unless your standard is ikea.
LSD would beg to differ.
you can make your own for like a quarter of that price:
Thanks for the link, but that is way beyond my ability. If I really wanted one of these I would just pay the $1200. $1200 seems like a very fair price to me given the effort needed, to be honest.
At first after reading your comment I thought, βnah fam, lets check out this linkβ, but after checking that link I completely agree with you.
there was just a Kickstarter for a much smaller version for like $100
Doesn't sound that much for this tbh...
It looks more complicated than it is.
Think about something like a cheap 3D printer but just two axis instead of three and instead of the nozzle it's a magnet underneath that moves a magnetic ball on top. Not that difficult, not that expensive to make.
Again in principle it's just like a less complicated 3D printer and those can be way cheaper, especially if you take away an entire dimension and a dozen parts which make it more complicated.
It has silent operation, the product page says it has *two motors and it's a circular resolution. I'm thinking large gear around the table, with a belt or a string mechanism across the middle. There are a couple ways to do it, but that would keep the heavy parts outside.
Eh, 1200 seems fair.

Obviously you're going to choose food over a coffee table, but that doesn't mean the price isn't fair. It's part CNC machine, part furniture, likely handmade on a small scale. It would probably cost a couple hundred in materials to make it by yourself, and probably a shit load of time and trouble, and tools/equipment you'd have to buy.
The point is that some people can spend money on food for 3 months and still have enough money left to buy dozens of $1200 tables. It's not about choosing between having food or having a fancy expensive table.
Fair =/= affordable. I can't afford a 747, but that doesn't mean $400 million isn't "fair".
Depends on the build quality, making a ball move on 2 axis is not that expensive.
Worlds most expensive litter box
Thats when u go build it yourself
Looks DIY... I figured s/he did!
There's a version of this on Kickstarter that's smaller and cheaper called "Oasis mini".
Though this is the first time I've backed anything like this so yet to see if it's any good.
I backed this as well hah!
So did I! For those that are curious: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/oasisdesign/oasis-mini
Never back hardware on kickstarter - unless you want to consider the money a donation to some dreamers folly.
These guys fucked it for everyone: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/03/magazine/zpm-espresso-and-the-rage-of-the-jilted-crowdfunder.html
note: they always show these in a timelapse, because they are LOUD A.F. .. seriously.. the BRRRRRRRrr-CLICK-BrrrrRRRRrrRRRRRR-CLICK as it changes direction would drive me crazy. I saw one in a fancy lobby and they tried putting fountains around it, when that didn't work they added a "white noise" speaker. I could still hear it waiting for the elevator.
I've seen these at costco for like $300.
One person's 1200$ sys table is another man's Costco entrance rack bargain! Costco is the shhhiiiittt!
"Welcome to Costco; I love you."

There's one at this bar near me. It's definitely an eye catcher.
Whenever u see shit like this it's not worth it :(

Yup. My cats worked out how to open the sliding door to our kitchen, then worked out how to open the cupboards to help themselves to all the food they want.
One would be the lookout and if you came down heβd meow, then you would hear the pitter patter of paws quickly running out of the kitchen, to then be greeted by open doors and the bagel bag ripped open with tiny teeth marks in it.
Plus they have thumbs, so I wouldnβt put it past them to get a magnet themselves and mess up the drawings just for the lolz
Luckily for you, you can remove the sand and replace it with more ordered from the company. Lol. I'm not sure that regular beach or other type of sand would work. What's in there is pretty fine and the particles even in size. I think it makes better drawings that way. It's pretty cheap. A bag or two the size of an apple is all you need. It depends on the effect you're going for. The thicker sand layer creates different looks than a thinner sand layer would. The glass top comes off as needed.
Scrolled quickly past and thought it said syphilis table.
I was very confused.
Glad Iβm not the only one.
First thought was βwhy would someone ever build that?β

Yeah, trying to see one in action is a sysyphian task.
My prior experiences on reddit prevent me from asking that question
You arenβt the only one, it takes two to keep it going.
I read sissypuss
Sameπ
It's a visual representation of gentials afflicted by syphallis
It can be. It depends on where that metal ball has been.
The Ball erases it's laborious masterpiece just as it is completed. It contemplates the absurd purgatory, and wonders if it will ever feel oddly satisfied. The magnet laughs, and turns the ball in it's eternal prison
What game is that? The art style looks really nice
It is Hades. Fuckin amazing roguelite game if you enjoy those.
The entire Supergiant Games catalog is worth playing. Their soundtracks alone are on an entirely different level.

I'm guessing magnets
Fucking magnets, how do they work?
And I don't wanna talk to a scientist. Y'all mother fuckahs lyin' and gettin' me pissed!
No I don't think you have to fuck the magnets.

How do they work?

I think we are getting old friend
They come from the ground so there's still pieces of gravity in them
There's a magnet on a moving track that drags the ball bearing around through the sand.
I believe it would make more sense for it to be on a system similar to what CNC routers, plasma cutters, and 3D printers use to give full mobility in a given 2D plane.
Edit: Here is a link showing how they are made. Definitely more of a radial design, which makes more sense. Not a magnet on a track though like the original person I replied to said. Looks pretty awesome!
I think itβs much simpler. An arm that rotates at a constant rate, and a single DoF motor that moves a magnet up and down along the arm.
It effectively lets the radius vary over time with a constant angular velocity. Still a ton of interesting curves to draw, but it wonβt be able to spell words or draw pictures.
If it rotates at a constant rate though it wouldn't be able to do some of those patterns you see in the video. Unless the arm had another rotating motor that could be programmed to spin the magnet independently from the other arm.
A simple double track system would give it full freedom in a 2d plane to move in any pattern imaginable. It would also be simple to program as the control system is so widely used.
A CNC type track system wouldn't fit in the circular bounds of the table.
If the sand went to the edge it definitely wouldn't, but there seems to be enough room here to allow it to travel within the entire circle space.
I think the others are right though that it's likely the radius style arm
A polar mount also has two degrees of freedom: angle and radial distance. The patterns produced and the shape strongly suggest a polar mount.
The rotating table supplying the angle definitely does not have a fixed speed or direction, though, it can turn back as required by the program.
Radial coordinates would make more sense to me too.
I have one. There is an arm underneath that rotates around with a magnet that can go up and down the arm. The mechanism is controlled by a Raspberry Pi.
It has an app that let's you download extra patterns to it or draw your own.
Magnets
If I sold these I'd program it to draw dickbutt once a year at a random time
How does this work?
There are magnets underneath that move the ball around, and it has a bunch of preprogrammed patterns it cycles through.
What role does the spinning globe play?
None? I think itβs just a another knick-knack on display next to the table.
It would be cool if that globe rotated at the correct revolution rate
It sparks joy
Ikr⦠good question
God Damn The Sun.
The camera moving to the left was not satisfying.
The spinning ball is an unnecessary distraction. And i don't like the colored lights.
There is really large round coffee table like this in a local cannabis store. There are arm chairs surrounding it and usually a group of people sitting there staring at it while drinking coffee and listening to music the shop plays.
I see the same people there all the time staring at this table ... I think they live there now.
Isnβt this intentionally satisfying? Hardly oddly satisfying
It costs $1172 btw
Geez. Thanks. Saves me looking it up. It's cool, but not that cool.
This has nothing to do with endless turmoil and futility. I suppose it was picked for sounding educated and is targeted towards ignorant people with too much money.
Right? I just thought--what does Sisyphus have to do with this? A lot of things are "restarted" on a regular basis, that's not the only element of the Sisyphus tale.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one to own this. Lol. Mine is one ordered from their original Kickstarter campaign. It was made before they switched from all white to colored lights. I haven't gotten around to ordering and installing the upgrade kit to change the light colors yet. They're fun, aren't they? Lol.
How quick cat will destroy this? Just asking.
I'm so sad it didn't get the center done by midnight. Ugh.
Hmmm, a visitor?

Because it's a clock and does the same futile task every day, build and rebuild patterns rolling a ball, as seen in the video.
PREPARE THYSELF
That's minos
Still ultrakill enough
Do you like yours? I've been tempted but not 200 dollars tempted
$1200 tempted more like
It would be cool if that globe rotates at the same rate as Earth
That's a cool thing but, I'm sure my cat would find it and think it was it's litter box with a cool toy to chase in it!
There is absolutely nothing βoddβ about this satisfying
I kinda wish it went just a little slower cuz holy shit is this zen
So, who's jumping into the portal first?
πββοΈπββοΈ beam me up Scotty.

SISSY TABLE?!
One must imagine Sisyphus as a table
oddly? it is literally designed to be satisfying, you are an idiot
Yep, more and more posts on this sub are in this category.
I see that you don't have a cat
I actually built one myself. These tables from Sisyphus Industries are crazy expensive. The one I built has a diameter of about 120cm, and all materials combined only cost around β¬800.
