The sun on my door is so bright you can see it through the door.
Outside door temp read was 125f inside is 74f on the thick spots 80f in the red spots
Data!
Thank you
125!? Where tf do you live Death Valley?!
It sounds like they're taking the temp off the surface of the door, which has the sun shining on it. Shit gets hot.
Oh wow did not read carefully, still though
A majority of the United States is under a heat wave right now. I bet my door is even hotter.
Yeah I’d fuck your door too
I wonder if it’s the back door
I choose this man's dead door too.
Dude you made me laugh so much
I'd bet Phoenix or somewhere in that region of Arizona.
Phoenician, the temperature on the door would probably closer to 140-150° if this was Phoenix. The ambient temperature is close to 120°, but objects in the sun are a hell of a lot hotter.
Edit: I just looked at the temperature and it’s only 100° right now. I was not expecting that.
That’s not sunlight, the door is just red hot.
Check your southern walls and windows too. I bet your spending way more then you should be on power for an AC that probably never gets to stop. Upgraded quality insulation pays for itself.
I think I'd invest in a better insulated door.
At least a thicker one
Seems like it'd be easy to punch out a corner of the rectangular panel and get to the lock.
Yeah. The truth is, unless you pay for a special door, all doors are pretty much this easy to break into.
also most homes have windows made of like...glass
locks are a deterrent, but your home isn't a fortress, if somebody wants in they can honestly just take out a wall with a sledgehammer, to say nothing of kicking out the door or windows.
There was someone that posted on Reddit a few years ago that was in a construction battalion in the army. They said something that had stuck with me. That is that security measures are just about making the time to breach match the time to respond. This applies to razor wire, walls, sandbags, windows, doors, and locks. It's about making it take time and make noise so that you get noticed and a proper response goes out. I've thought of that comment a lot when looking at my back door that is 50% glass next to a box of logs for my BBQ.
God, that seems so obvious, and makes so much sense. I've considered replacing my front door with a door more like my parents', which is mostly glass and lets in SO much light. I love it in the spring when I can open the door and have just the screen door on, with all that light in the entryway it looks so nice. But then I think how easily someone could break into a glass door vs solíd wood like I have now, and as a small woman living alone, I would rather have wood. At least then I'd have time to sneak out the back or something.
Though, realistically, someone could also break in through the bedroom window that is right next to the door on my porch, lol.
Get a dog, they're a better deterrent than any door
You know what is better than a dog as a deterrent? A Cassowary.
Yeah but now your inside your house with a fucking cassowary. Much safer to just let the criminal in.
I was going to suggest a goose but I think you got me beat
A donkey. It's take an ass to protect your assets.
Great deterrent and they'll certainly alert you to an intruder, but effectively useless if someone actually breaks in. Most dogs will happily greet someone once they get in, and smart burglars will carry treats with them if they plan to break into a house with a dog.
Yup that's where I am right now 😂 I have a 77lb lab and the most "deterrent" thing about him is his bark. He's still a puppy, so maybe he'll become more reliable of a protector when he's older, but right now I fully believe he would run over my dead body to get petted by an intruder. Another benefit to having a solid door is potential break-ins can't tell the difference between a doberman and a labrador bark; you have no idea what's waiting for you inside. And his bark is SCARY. Hopefully that's enough to keep us relatively safe.
Hah, when we moved into a new house we had a pool guy who was scheduled by the previous owners show up unexpectedly while we were out. My parents saw him when we came home and asked how he got through our two 100+lb great danes. He replied that he just gave them some dog treats and they left him alone 🤣
smart burglars will carry treats with them if they plan to break into a house with a dog.
What kind of Ocean's Eleven shit are you referencing here? People break into houses because they're desperate and stupid, maybe not even in that order.
I feel like this might have happened one time in history by some sort of career criminal mastermind behind, say, like 3 break-ins.
My dog doesn't take treats from strangers. No idea where she learned that from, but she's quite the guardian.
Car windows too. I keep telling my wife there is nothing in the car with stealing and I don't want to have to replace a window for someone to learn that.
What really sucks is when the door is unlocked and they shatter the window anyways. Ask how I know...
What's really annoying is what we consider worth stealing and what they consider worth stealing are totally different.
I once had a window broken at a campsite so someone could steal a can of beer visible on my backseat. And recently locally several cars have had windows smashed for pocket change.
No this is how they secure nuclear sites. Fun fact the speed they assume for the adversary is that of a special ops team fully loaded. So patrol patterns are set to make sure eye are on everything in less time for a spec ops team to breach.
Of course then there was the nun protestor who made it past all that and was found inside the kill zone next to the uranium storage who was arrested. So nuns be crazy.
I'm sure there were other failures, but it kind of makes sense that a single person would be more effective than a small team. It's a lot easier for one person to hide.
That’s why I live in a fallout bunker. Not by the hair of my chiny chin chin, I say.
This little piggy went to market..
Oh wait I'm in the wrong group of piggies.
If you ever want to be depressed about how easy it is to have a thief break in, watch Lockpickinglawyer on YouTube.
I wish he would endorse locks. I mean the few ones that he shows us and he says he uses it himself is as good as an endorsement, I’d just like to know what are the best of various locks
What I’ve learned from watching is that a lock, at best, is a deterrent. And a crappy lock is a joke.
I recall various early videos where he addressed this. A simple $15 lock is appropriate for most personal scenarios. You can spend a lot of money on an unpickable electronic lock, that's shaped in a way that makes cutting it difficult, but to no productive end. You're more likely to lock yourself out of your shit, and any fantastical scenario where thieves are making a concerted effort to rob you, will just go around the lock.
So the his game isn't to endorse "the best lock." It's just to see which locks can be picked and how, for the fun of lockpicking.
Yeah, for the most part in our day to day lives, the locks we put on things are not the weakest link in that metaphorical security chain. Even with an actual chain and padlock, the chain is probably softer steel than the lock itself, and so it's easier to just cut the chain. Doors, same thing. Just kick it in. The wood of the doorjamb will give way way easier than breaking or picking the lock.
The only advantage picking the lock gives you is stealth, and allows you to conceal the unauthorized access for longer. But people who just want to steal your shit don't give one half fuck about that. They'll just smash and grab whatever looks valuable. If somebody is out there specifically targeting YOU or some specific single thing you have, depending on their level of determination and how much they care about the consequences, they'll get you eventually. Our every day security practices are simply to deter crimes of opportunity. Don't have to make your shit impossible to take, just more of a pain in the ass than the next guy's shit.
I tend to think that the same goes for your (locally stored) data. I don't see why people encrypt their drives. it just makes it worse for you if something fails and realistically nobody is going to break into your home just to steal your computer. it does make more sense for a laptop though because you could leave that in a public place plus more portable
He could land himself in a tough spot if he started endorsing things that people (stupid people included) are securing their lives and property with. I think he does a good job of toeing that line.
Locks are just to keep honest people honest. If someone really wants to get in, they’re getting in.
You're watching an expert. Yes he can get through them fine, but the average thief isn't spending hours training themselves. Some locks are definitely easy to get through for amateurs, but he makes a lot of them look easier then it actually is.
Don’t even need to know how to lock pick. A set of coveralls, extension ladder, a sawzall, and your neighbors think your getting roof work done while your alarms never even go off. I can tell you a thousand ways to break into a home.
Worked on remodeling a very large building completely gutting the inside. A good part of the ground level floor was rebuilt into a data center that had reinforced doors with automatic locks, and passcard + biometrics security at the entrance to even open the place.
However--one side of that room faced the outside and exterior of the building was custom shaped metal panels that were affixed with hex bolts. All you needed to access the place was to go to the alley with a battery drill with a hex bit, pop out five screws and you could walk through a 4 x 8 hole.
If you were already in the building, the walls were just standard drywall. Not sure what this reinforced door was supposed to do.
The biometrics, card reader and auto lock--sure they made some sense--but there were some major holes in the security plans.
It’s amazing how easily most buildings can be accessed, I’ve worked on homes where the glass sliding back doors could be pushed up and slid out from the outside.
You can go just about anywhere with a high vis vest and a clipboard. People just assume you’re supposed to be there.
I used to do this when I was a project manager in Manhattan to use employee bathrooms in random buildings if I needed to go. It’s crazy how often “my guys are already upstairs” has gotten me into “secure” buildings.
A broken window would be a hard way to get into a house, it would slice you to shreds. Popping the locks on a window are pretty easy though. And ya it wouldn’t be particularly difficult to just cut s hole in a wall with a sawzall, but it is somewhat hazardous as well cause you could easily cut through a wire.
Break a window with a crowbar so you can get it all the way to the metal with no glass sticking out. Throw a towel or thick jacket over the bottom of it to be sure. Have you never watched a movie?
A swift kick will defeat most doors without a reinforced frame.
Maybe in your place. Doors in Europe will break you.
In the US. Everywhere else I’ve lived they have doors that also function as an obstacle for intruders.
Burn Notice taught me that even if you have a security door, you’d better also have invested in some solid walls or the guy can just gone through the dry wall around the door, lol.
"Every decent punk has a bullet proof door, but people forget walls are just plaster. Hopefully, you get him with the first shot.... or the second.
Now he's down and waiting for you to come through the front door; so you don't come through the front door."
Upvote for Burn Notice. I loved that show
I did too, it was a neat twist on the detective/problem solving drama.
They kind of got away from it when trying to wrap of the show but guess it couldn't go on forever.
Exterior doors are solid. Interior doors are hollow. This must be a flip house where someone repurposed an interior door for an exterior one.
I always say that if somebody wants to get into a house there's virtually nothing you can do to stop them. Locks and strong doors stop people from just trying to get in and seeing what they can get their hands on.
It's the same with car thefts to be honest and I don't mean the theft of the car itself but in plenty of neighborhoods I've lived in the last 10 years people will walk around the neighborhood and just check for unlocked car doors and take whatever they can get. Those same people could break a window or use a crowbar to pop open the door but they're really looking for those easy hits with less risk.
Doors are only as secure as the frame they’re attached to. In my experience, the failure point is always the frame.
Where do you live that you have doors like this at the front door? My apartment door is way stronger than this and the front door is made from metal and the window in it is triple-glassed. No way you’re punching that through without heavy tools
Lol I thought the red was paint at first.
Someone cheaped out and put an interior door on the exterior of a home.
Most places regulations say you should have a proper fire rated door on external entrances. This doesn't seem like it'd be fire rated. (The had to replace both entrance doors to my apartment as they weren't properly fire rated, they were just internal doors - they did this when I moved out after 15 years of renting there, so... nice to find that out :P)
Fire rated is required for apartments but not single family homes. It’s only to keep the fire contained to your unit so it doesn’t spread to others.
In a normal house a simple door to separate the kitchen from the room you sleep in would be a good add on, but usually the only door that needs to be a fire door is if you have an attached garage, with the door that opens to the house needing to be a fire door.
All you are looking for is enough to slow down the flames and smoke spread so people can escape, where an apartment is meant to make 'shelter in place' work. So if your apartment is on fire it will keep it in, and if there is a fire outside will keep it out.
Pretty much, There is also positive and neutral fire doors depending on where the pressure plane is on the door and where that door is located in the building.
Many fire doors require an intumescent seal that will expand when heated to protect against smoke and also so that air doesn’t come into the room & feed the fire.
This is a bot account.
Also, it might be helpful to steal the gap at the bottom-left that sunlight is coming through.
That door is not code for an exterior door
There’s a reason to use solid doors.
yeah, the law
And in this case the law is even for a good reason
I just bought a new build and they wanted $150/door to change each door from hollow core to solid core.
I did the powder room because it’s next to the living room and sound is important there but I went with hollow core everyone else.
I live alone and it’s not hard to change the door slab later if I end up not living alone at a later date, but WILD that they put this in as an exterior door. I wonder where OP lives. This wouldn’t fly where I live in Canada.
$150 a door is really cheap. That's basically material cost only. I would have taken them up on that offer in a heartbeat. Unless you just truly don't care, it's an immediate upgrade in quality that carries feel throughout the rest of the home. You'll be paying $600+paint per door if you ever want to change your mind.
Depends on the quality of the door. If we're talking a standard Masonite upgrade that's like a $50-100 difference in cost to a contractor.
I don't know many contractors that offer upgrades for basically material costs. That's usually where the margins are the best.
Maybe contractors can get a better deal, but a homeowner can't upgrade from hollow to solid for $150. A solid core door starts at about $200.
So hollow core doors are typically MDF panels and maybe some cardboard honeycomb for rigidity. The second it gets wet it's done. But they should be dense enough to block light. Especially if they are painted.
Exterior doors come in solid wood, steel, and fiberglass. But I can't wrap my brain around how any of these materials are thin enough to let light shine through. This ain't even a landlord special. This has gotta be like a wish dot com door or something. Either that or it's a metal door and theres a tremendous fire on the other side.
How does US have both a strict as fuck HOA and building codes and shit yet also landlords who’d put a door like this as a front door and the other shenanigans they get up to that one can read here
Can't possibly be, right?
That's not a door, that's a hell portal.
Kenny Rogers Roasters across the street
Perfect
Oh I’m stressed!
🫳🫳🫳
I thought it was milk!
It's killing me. I can't eat, I can't sleep, all I can see is that giant red sun in the shape of a chicken.
Bad chicken! Mess you up!
So glad this is the top response.
Run! Satan is here! Run!
Is it the end, my friend?
Satan's coming 'round the bend
People running 'cause they're scared
The people better go and beware
No, no, please God help me
I'm the devil I love metal!
My rods and cones are all screwed up!!!
that looked like milk to me!
kenny?...Kenny?!
Bad chicken! Mess you up!
M...Mr. Marbles?
Kenny never hurt anybody!!
Oh I’m stressed 🫳
I am watching that one on TV right now!
Literally just watched this episode an hour ago
All I see was a red door that was painted black.
No colors anymore. I want them to turn black.
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes.
I have to ask my landlord why my front door glows.
I see a line of windows and they’re all painted black
No colors anymore I want them to glow red
No more will my sea turn a deeper blue
It looks white and gold to me.
"Close the blast doors!"
"They are still coming through..."
Your door is so cheap you can see the sun through it.
Bet that's energy efficient
Bet it's an interior door. Someone cheaped out big time.
Is that your front door? I’d suggest getting something stronger before someone goes full Kool-aid man on it.
Oh yeah!
Ah yes. The landlord special.
That looks like an interior door.
“ZUUL!”
Every man in the movie theater "hell yes I am!"
“There is no Dana, only Zuul.” “And that is a lovely singing voice you have there.”
I am concerned about the insulation value of that door.
What part of hell do you live in?
The HOA subdivision
The Scary Door.
You are entering the vicinity of an area adjacent to a location. The kind of place where there might be a monster, or some kind of weird mirror. These are just examples; it could also be something much better.
I hate to tell you, but that door is meant for interior applications only.
This is what I was looking for.
Holy shit guys, it's that door from the Rolling Stones song!!
Prepare your shotgun
The demons are here
There’s no red paint of anything on my door. That’s the sun from the outside shining through
How thin are the parts where the sun is shining through?
Too thin. Definitely not a safe exterior door.
Probably one of those hollow core doors that are popular(cheap) with modern construction. They aren't even made of wood and with certain paint, I can see this happening, especially since gray absorbs more light, than white paint.
I don’t have a good way to measure that
Cut a hole through it, stick a tape measure in and report back!
Width of the door minus depth of indent on each side
Okay. Looks cool as hell (and like a door to hell)
Is this an exterior door? Or an indoor door like the ones between rooms?
It’s an exterior door for a shed
Dude, someone could cough that thing open, you really gotta get a better door
I can hear dark synth music
I think you'll need the red key to open this one
Is that an interior door, being used as an exterior one? An exterior door shouldn't let light in...at all.
Looks like it could be a poster for Stranger Things.
WTF did they put an interior hallow core door on an outside opening?
Devil's Door
Zak Bagans will show up wanting to perform an exorcism on it
finally, the one-ply door
I thought this was black and red paint at first
I thought it was just Darth Maul paint-styled. Wow that is one weakly fabricated door.
Either you have a very thin door or you live in hell.
I legit thought this was an ad for the new Insidious movie.
Insidious door 👹
This is what it looks like if you see a red door and want it painted black.
Thats not a door.. maybe a peice of paper
Do you live on Mercury?
I see a red door and it's partially painted black
Jeez, they’re just rapid firing these Insidious movies.
This is something out of a horror movie. #insidious
Insidious-type shit
Yeah, okay, I've seen Insidious, no thank you.....
Gamers and their RGB lighting on everything.
Naw that’s gozer.
I had one of these. Someone knocked and had to get a new one.
Or, hear me out, your door is thin.
Someone put a cheap $75 closet door as your front door lmao. Sorry, but there is no way this is a proper front door. Must be the landlord special.
It’s the door that leads to the upside down
Bro lives on the sun
that door is made out of paper, wtf
Edit: Never mind, this this probably just a fiberglass exterior door (see child comments)
That as an interior door* used as an exterior door*, which is sometimes done by contractors or landlords to save a few bucks instead of doing the job properly.
Inferior doors are hollow and light weight since they only really need to protect privacy (and usually cheaper). Exterior doors are solid for insulation (sound, temperature, light, etc.) purposes, as well as for some amount of safety (and also more expensive).
This might be against building codes, it's worth checking to make sure.
Close encounters vibes..
Darth Vader bout to blast out that shit!!!!
Whatever, Satan.
Kramer?
Wonder how much heat is coming through
