Do you care much what the watch “is for”?

my watch is a symbol of pure hearted people, i don't care if a friend gave me an empty paper as a gift, as long as it from him then i will love it and keep it safe.

so yeah i don't really care for what the watch is made for, i care more about the story of how did i got it, it's more meaningful to me ♥

Great question I started wearing a watch at age 38 after reading the book “Digital Minimalist” by Dr Cal Newport, the book really made me evaluate my relationship w technology, I realized that I was looking at my phone to check the time which then led to scrolling dumb sites and there you go…a few minutes of my day wasted. So I remembered that there are these things called watches!!! I started wearing one and it’s been great! Obvi…Apple watches are not for me!

Not really tbh. I don't really think there's much more function to be had from a wristwatch anymore that hasn't already been replaced by a newer and more accurate electronic device. Divers don't use dive watches anymore, a dive computer does the job better (and most people with dive watches aren't even gonna get their watch within 10 feet of anything that isn't their kitchen or bathroom sink). Doctors don't use pulsometer watches anymore, a pulse oximeter does the job better. The cheapest smartphone has a perpetual calendar, alarm, multiple time zones, chronograph, and gps based timekeeping which is more accurate than any watch can ever be, and since it's a necessary purchase in today's world, pretty much everybody has the ability to access such high end timekeeping.

The only thing a standard wristwatch does well anymore is be a convenient and attractive way to check the time, and that's exactly what most watch buyers buy watches for. They buy the watch because they like the watch. All the marketing material is just a bonus to make them feel like they can do more with their watch, even if they ultimately never intend on it.

Take your G Shock for example. Sure, you know you can go diving with it. Sure, you know you can drop it from 10 feet and not worry about it. Sure, you know you can run over it with a car and nothing would happen to it. But are you actually gonna do that stuff or put your watch through that stuff? I know I'm not. I bought my G Shock cuz I thought it looked cool and I know that Casio makes good shit. I'm very fairly sure I'm not alone in that particular boat.

A lot of people assign "roles" to watches, and I understand that. However, I'm a big proponent of "wear what you feel works with your outfit". If you like the way a G Shock looks with your formal attire more than a dress watch, then rock that shit. I did it once and got tons of compliments.

For other people? Absolutely not, wear what you want.

I work a job that involves lots of dust and mud as well as lots of physical abuse, so my mudmasters/mudmen, and rangeman are the only watches I’ll wear to work and I rarely wear any of them outside of work.

I like it because I can have a work rotation and a non work rotation which makes it easier to wear all my G’s without picking favorites.

All that said, yours is my favorite mudmaster in my favorite color scheme. I wish I went with the red

I wear this to the office everyday and keep my other G-Shocks for my down time. I rarely wear any of my other brand watches now

I buy mine for 99% aesthetcs... if I think the watch looks cool and if it'll last. I like solar and Bluetooth on my g's too ill probably never buy another non-solar model even though I love my GBD-200.

I buy for comfort too but I've never worn a g shock that wasn't comfortable to me.

Not really. I wear my G-Shock to work from time to time.

I get hung up on it sometimes, for sure. I don't dive, and I'm not a pilot or an adventurer either. Feels like it might be silly to have a barometer or a slide rule or a compass or a tide graph or whatever.

But then, they don't really make a watch specifically for 'slightly clumsy dads who work around a lot of stuff with magnets but still prefer analogue watches', so maybe one day I'll buy that GravityMaster and just get over it. Maybe. 😅

The most important thing to remember is that it's for you. You're going to look at the watch and care about it 1000x more than anyone else. And caring what others think about your watch is really stupid, anyway.

Btw, as I type this I'm also wearing a mudmaster. I do hike a lot but I mostly just got the watch because I like to look at it and play around with the functions. It's just fun. Life is short.

Cool watch. It looks like if you push the right button, a full-blown iron man suit will expand and cover your body.

All my G-Shocks are dress watches, tough dress watches. I know they can take a beating but their main job is to go with what I wear that day to the office.

I wear low-key G-Shocks like GAB-2100 and 5610 and dive watches for "desk duty."

I personally don't wear the more outlandish ones like Mudmasters and stuff because even a G-Shock 5610 is overkill for me. (Also, I like the "ecosystem" of mods and stuff)

But, I think it's totally fine if somebody else wears a Mudmaster/Rangemaster/etc for desk duty.

I care, but only in as much as I have a particular set of functions I like to have. That means no matter how cool the Gravitymaster I saw on Shockbase is or how good a deal I saw on a Rangeman (I love the way they look) my priority is on a tide watch. If I ever run out of tide/moon G’s that I want to buy I can branch out. I certainly don’t need that function at work but I’m wearing it anyway. The tough factor comes in handy for me but even if it didn’t I’d wear them anyway.

Yes and no. I don't really care but I have my GA-100 and a G5600 for beating, a couple of smarter watches, a Duro for water stuff and I also have a Pulsar pilots watch - the civilian version of the RAF standard issue one. Fun to know what they're for but it's nice you have one that is ready for anything - kind of like my GA-100-1A1.

I’m retired, but I do work on the side that involves stuff like digging, busting up concrete, felling trees, etc. General contracting/handyman stuff. In those cases I do care about the toughness and functionality of the watch and I don’t baby it. When work is done I just take it into the shower with me and let it get clean along with the rest of my nasty bod. That being said, I also spent 28 years of my career as a survival instructor and wore a G Shock during much of that time, so it’s just what I’m used to and like having on my wrist most of the time regardless of my other attire. I do have more appropriate watches that I’ll put on for formal occasions, but my G is with me like 90% of the time.

Whatever floats your boat. It’s all about what each of us like to wear. Even before I retired I couldn’t wear a watch at work. Pretty much 100% of the time I don’t wear a watch while working outdoors or with most any power tools. It just gets in the way or is too hot and sweaty in warmer weather. Fishing, hiking etc I will wear a watch.

I want a different Casio for each occasion of my life, idc haha.

I'm a professional desk diver.

For me, only one thing matters - the watch must appeal to me. I work from home, so I don't really need a rugged watch, but I just like them. Besides, I like the reassurance that it's resistant to mud or other conditions, even if it never encounters any. But who knows? Maybe there will be a Zombie apocalypse? :D

Sure, I now have a watch that's "for" work and dress events, and will be buying a G-Shock that's "for" doing things that often result in a scratched or damaged watch.

I care to a degree. I have a little watch collection and I bought watches I like for different occasions, eg. Dress watches, sports watches, dive watches, etc. G-Shock will always be my casual watches because they're generally too big for anything else.

Not a whole lot, once I like it and the price suits my budget. I’d probably never get a Mudman/Rangeman/etc., but only because they’re pricey for me and not my usual style; the packed feature set itself doesn’t put me off. Same with “dive watches” - I’m not interested because of the ratio of price to visual appeal, but the fact that I don’t dive is irrelevant.

That said, my watches definitely “find” particular purposes.

My GBD-200 is “for” running and fitness, and I do use it for that occasionally - but it’s become my default watch because the feature set is really useful to me every day (big clear dial, vibration, step counter, notifications, multi-set countdown timer).

My GM-2100 has become my “dress-y” watch when I need to look smart/not wear a bright green rubber watch.

And my GD-350 has become my spare beater watch for when my GBD-200 is getting its battery/gaskets changed.

No man! It's completely fine! I have a mudmaster myself, and I always wear it for casual use. When I go mountain biking and it gets dirty. It's the kind of watch that should be worn for every occasion, really. Literally, every model of g-shock can be worn for every occasion since you don't have to worry about it getting damaged. I always get compliments on it, too, when I'm out in public. It's a 500 dollar watch, so you should be able to wear it all the time!

I work in a Bank and one of my watches is a MudMaster. The only requiremebt besides looks in any watch is waterproof. I don't want to take it off for shower or swimming.

Sometimes. My day to day does not consist of challenging environments where a dive watch or a G Shock might shine. I work in a laboratory. To be honest, if we’re strictly talking about what watches are for, smart watches are perfect in a laboratory setting: timers and alarms, notifications for communication with your team, changing your music etc. Very vanilla stuff haha. I do know that my wrists get wet all the time so a decent WR is nice. I like having lighter materials such as titanium since I am in the lab all day. Nice, legible markers such as in pilot watches are neat too.

All in all, I care for it sometimes. One thing that has caught my eye are these H2O Kalmars with like 25,000M water resistance. Would love to test that WR out while washing my hands on a sink.

If I buy it for myself, I care about function, then form.

If it's a gift from someone and it's not totally useless, I'd wear it with whatever clothes it fits nicely, or just when I feel like it.

I started wearing a watch daily with 21, that was 15 years ago. The watch in question was a Casio and is still in my collection and running still on the same battery. 😮 That got me started with watches in general.

I am working professionally in the digital realm and stay, while I am at work, always connected. So too slow down a bit and get away from the screens of my daily doings, a watch is great to not look constantly at your smartphone for timings etc. And get distracted. Nowadays my smartphone is 90% of the time on silent.

I really use a watch as intended and can't really get my head around not wearing one. My time management also got better in these 15 years. And simply glancing at your wrist instead of fiddling to get a phone out is an ease of mind.

No. I wear what I want with what I want. Own my own analytics firm. I love GShocks because they are always good to go and I don’t have to worry about time zones and my watch being wrong

For me it somewhat does. While I do still aspire to acquire more Dress watches when I come across one by impulse, its soured by the fact that I'll rarely wear it. Thus I'm gravitating towards acquiring more Pilots/Field/Dive Watches because of where I usually spend my time and won't have to worry about it getting scarred.

I rarely care. My Frogs are a regular part of my rotation and I am not a diver. These days I'm lucky if I "swim" twice a year let alone dive. All of my Frogmans are LE and as such I would not take them diving even if I were to dive.

I may do a little conscious coordination -- for example today I'm wearing an orange shirt and I'm wearing my Frog that has orange trim. That's the extent of it and its not a constant thing. I'll wear that watch with anything. Same with my other watches.

I'm 100% with what you've said! It's a + having the ability to swim in mud with the watch or anything else, but I don't think you should get the basicest G model juat because you work in a office for exemple.

I mean, if you like it and can spare the dough for it, go for it. I've a healthy envy for people who can do that. In my case, my job was a justification for the Mudmaster. I need to know north, the barometer is a great reference to know if it's about to rain, and the altimeter is also great if I calibrate it before heading out. If it weren't for my work life, I would've probably stuck to the basic models.

It's for wearing and telling time

I probably wouldn't wear it to an office setting unless it was a very laid back atmosphere. Or pretty much anytime I'd be wearing a tie. Like a wedding. But luckily I don't have many occasions like that anymore since I generally WFH so I'm always wearing my oversized G's.

Watches this day and age are man jewelry/ accessories so I wear a watch that accessorizes well with whatever I’m wearing that day. I’m no snob though so I don’t really care what others wear.

All my watches have a purpose and match the environment I’m in or going to be in for the day. I personally only wear my gshock if I’m working outdoors or on a hike etc. For other occasions like working in the office I use my other dress watches to match my attire.

No, I'm wearing G-Shock watches whilst I'm not shocking and dress watches whilst I'm not wearing a dress.

I do and I don't. I work from home and therefore don't have a uniform in the least bit so wear whatever G I want. That said when doing something "not G-shock" like going out I do have a dress watch for these things but I hate it compared to my G.

I took a G-LIDE module and modded it with a TVA knockoff case. I don't surf but the tide chart and moon phase look so cool, bringing some analog flavor and a hearkening to nature among all the alphanumeric line segments.

Ironically, with the knockoff case, you absolutely should not take this thing in the water; the exposed red "fine resin cushioning" is actually just a piece of red tape!

I got it because it's the most accurate, the fact I can punt it farther than Sammy Baugh is a bonus. Also I can customize it to look better for certain scenarios if I need to

My wife of 7 years bought me a mudmaster as a wedding present back in 2017, got married in it, very sentimental piece doesn't get worn very often but when it does, its a reminder, plus mudmaster are badass anyway!

Huh? Watches are for telling the time and they can also serve as a piece of jewelry. Wear whatever you want in whatever setting you see fit, the most important thing is that you feel happy every time you look at your watch.

My GBD 100 is supposed to be a running watch while my BLX 570 is supposed to be a beach/surf watch. Yet, i use them everytime because they're durable.

I 100% care what's it for but 5% use it for what it's for (it terms of extreme capabilities). I WFH at a computer all day but my mudmaster is my daily because its bad ass!

The way I see it, no Rolex can define me or reflect on my personality the way a g shock can. I never feel comfy wearing any watch other than a G Shock.

Personally, I'd be afraid to get a mudmaster truly muddy. Too many nooks a crannies to clean out.
