So it seems many companies that were once wfh has called employees back to office
I’m currently looking for a remote job , so I’m curious to know how hard will it be for me , especially when it seems like the opportunities are less and less compare to during the 2020 lockdown

How do you navigate the regional tax laws in your business (assuming you guys are fine with people nomading)?
Probably just requiring work permission and some address in some location in the country where they're starting the biz.
Payroll companies will do this for as little as $40 a month.
This is not actually a thing the company needs to be concerned about unless they have like 40+ people in the same country.
How did you measure higher levels of productivity and what programs do you use to manage tasks / Projects?
My company will always be remote, but the real question is, if I leave or lose the role, finding another remote job will not be easy.
That's the boat I am in now as well. We closed all of our offices and went fully remote 2 years ago. I would really like another job with better pay, but I dread looking for another remote job. My company also makes it's decisions mid-January and last year they didn't let anyone go, but they have in prior years.

I’m never going back (except maybe for a brief time while a job hunt).
Before Covid I never even considered it. But now I’ve had a couple jobs since my last office job and found there are plenty of totally remote places out there.
The two remote jobs I have aren’t even set up to “come back”. They don’t have a main office and their employees are all over the country. They’d have to first get a building and likely hire an entire new team.

Because when I searched on indeed, it’s always local companies that only hires locally , even for remote jobs
Are you reading the descriptions instead of just headline. The title may say “remote in New York” and while lot say “must be in New York” a lot say anywhere.
I think when the economy improves in a years time with the clarity after the election more companies will offer wfh if they want to compete for talent. But for now its best to hang on and put up with the BS. The genie is out of the bottle many people who were fully wfh haven't forgotten and the best part is many of these companies are gonna get screwed when no one wants to work for them
To be fair, there’s a lot of elections happening this year, quite a lot of ‘important’ ones too which will dictate the fate of a lot of what’s going on in the world so they have a point.

I wont have to worry about it. This role was always remote and we sold 80% of our real estate portfolio.
Id rather be homeless on the street, selling trinkets or worse being a digital marketer selling courses online than go back into an office.

My company sold off all our offices. They fully committed to the WFH lifestyle. So like 6 months from now I should be getting called back.
Unnecessary office jobs are unbearable now. I need to feel the need to be in the office or I’m going to quit. It’s dumb to waste my life in an office, unnecessarily.
First office job suddenly became remote in 2020, it was great. 2 years, no issues, all remote meetings with people in other states.
Then the company decided to call everyone back into the office. After 1 week of sitting in a cubicle, completed all work in the first hour, and was waiting on meetings, I had to quit.
I couldn’t take it. The boredom was unbearable; just waiting for the next meeting with nothing to actually do. At home, working efficiently and waiting for the next meeting was great because you can do other things.
WFH is the only way now. Lived in other states, other countries, traveling while working. Say nothing to even one colleague. Just discuss work and get off the line. Be extremely easy to work with.
They’re there but not like in 2021. Definitely give yourself the best chance to stand out by fortifying your resume, LinkedIn profile, and website or portfolio if you have one. Also, introduce yourself to people, cold pitch, and don’t be afraid of attending in-person networking events if they’re available.
I was fortunate to have saved during the good years and held out for 100% remote work when looking for new opportunities. I don’t plan on going back to the office (remote since pre-pandemic) and I started a business to avoid having to do so ever again.
We got mandated back to the office five days a week around six months ago. I was in the office today, I reckon about 20% of people are there. They can’t fire all of us.
They’ve long since RTO’d and because I was hired remote, was based hundreds of miles away, and had specialized skills they couldn’t hire locally for—I kept my remote position and will continue to keep it.

I'm a freelancer writer, so none of the clients I work with have an office either. In fact, im 2 deviations away from anyone who works a 9-5. Really depends on the field I think
I think my current employer will stay remote. My lead and mentor are located in another state and my clients are also spread across the country and all meetings are remote except for some occasional on-site workshops every few months. Even if I went to the closest office, there would be nobody with whom I closely work together and I would spend my day on Teams calls anyway. I absolutely can't see myself in an office 5 days a week anymore. 1-2 days per week would be acceptable for me, but not more than that.
Personally, I hope to continue working remotely because it offers a better work-life balance. If my company required me to return to the office, I would consider looking for a new remote job. The market for remote work is still strong, even if it’s not as abundant as during the 2020 lockdown.
Asking people back to work is one way to get rid of them.

My company is fully remote, with employees all over the US and globally. They have no intention of making people go to offices. I count my blessings every day.

My company has said they will always be remote and are firm about it. But once we sell, which we will, it will probably change based on who the potential suitors are.
My job has been 100% clear that there is Ko return to office plan, and my direct supervisor has said he would quit if they try to make him go back. I would too.

This all depends on the position.
Some jobs I actually do feel like may need to be in hybrid at least. Idt any job should be 5xs a week in office unless you’re doing hands on work. Any company that makes that mandatory is just a bad company.
Other high level positions will stay remote due to skill and nature of the work
Been working in a company with no physical office for almost 10 years. Despite the lack of opportunities to meet face to face, coworkers try to organize meet ups at least a few times a year. A number of people left last year because they prefer a more traditional office type work environment over a virtual one.

Don't tell my co-workers but I love working from home. My heart did a happy dance when our company said they were closing our centers--and all the centers later that month--and that we were all going remote. I hated going into the office and I'm so glad I won't have to do that again. A lot of my co-workers miss going to an office and talking to people in person--it's highly overrated. We have been fully remote for 2 years, and longer than that for regular employees--I'm a supervisor so I had to be in the office but I rotated in and out of the office during covid and for about 6 months after. We were called back for about 6 more months before we went fully remote.
I think a lot of companies are finding that if they are already remote, why not stay remote? If you have been without needed to go to a physical office for this long, why not keep it that way. It took a bit of time, but everything that we could do in the office, we can do remote. My company saved probably a million dollars by closing all of the brick and mortar offices.
If I had to back to an office or any physical space to work again, I think I'd rather buy a boat to live on and learn to sail than ever do that again.

My last job told me when I was hired that it was a remote first company. This was in 2022, fast forward to January of this year, they announced that by April everyone who lives within 30 miles of an office had to be in office 2 days a week. Those who were fully remote, started disappearing off of slack, not all, but many were let go.
My company is now only hiring ppl for on-site ... I was hired during covid before we even got an office (early stage startup), I live out of state. on my recent trip back to the office for 1 week, my boss pulled me in & offered me a raise & relocation fee reimbursement to move back. I said thanks but no thanks.
My company used to be all in office. Then during COVID they went remote like so many, which is when I got hired. So I've never been in the office. Lots of people moved out of state and settled down in new places since becoming remote. I don't see how they could call people back at this point. One guy actually moved to Canada, and bought a house there.
I think my current job will let me work remotely for the foreseeable future. However, I do fear that many will force their employees back, and my employer will make up for this by not giving me raises, recognizing that remote is a rarer commodity
Option 3: Quit and not work
The company I worked for went fully remote during covid (before I started) but then they ended up using that as an excuse to start laying off US employees and outsource more work to other countries where they can pay people less. I lost my job and I have had absolutely no luck finding another job.
I recently started my own business. After seeing how productive teams can be remote at my last job, we've decided to forgo investing in any type of office space and function completely remote. The low overhead allows us to invest in other areas of the business. I suspect I'm not the only business owner who feels this way.
