Did they use a backdrop for Dawsonās backyard? Iāve noticed how fake it looks but never knew if it was just the camera equipment from back then. S1E1 for reference.
I know some will roll your eyes at this, but I have a question š
Why are all these shows filmed in NC?
Wilmington has gem studios. Itās always been really popular and itās beautiful there
I believe this was a WB show. WB, which is now the CW is not a big network and chose filming locations that were much more affordable than lots in New York and LA
This was before so many of the shows were made by the networks -- Dawson's Creek was a Columbia TriStar show, the company that became Sony Television.
Kevin Williamson was also born in New Bern, NC. Itās about 2 hours north of Wilmington. Why he chose to make Capside based in Massachusetts Iām not sure. Maybe so they could have all four seasons.
I actually moved to Wilmington because of this show in 2018 for a summer. I was fresh out of film school and couldnāt find any work in the industry, so I left in the fall after pretty much spending all summer delivering Chinese food in a car with a broken AC. While the Riverwalk and Downtown was neat and there was still a lot of pretty locations and beaches, it was not what I anticipated. They did a really good job of making it look like a small town in the show. In reality, thereās tons of traffic and busy main roads. Not very pedestrian friendly. Which is what I get for moving somewhere Iāve never been I guess. While I donāt regret it, I was pretty disappointed. š
But to answer your question, as another poster stated, Screen Gem Studios is there and besides Dawsonās Creek and One Tree Hill, there was actually quite a lot of features filmed there. Most recently Halloween Kills and Scream 5. I have no idea what itās like now, as the industry as a whole in the States is struggling.
I think the network didnāt want it to be a āsouthernā show
Iāve been there before. Thatās why I ask. If you look closely, trees closer to the house are blowing in the wind. The others are still.
Fans?
Honestly it could have been edited for tv for some reason. Shows definitely looked different then lol
Could be!
My favorite clearly fake scene is when they're all there for a holiday and theres supposed to be snow on the ground.
You can clearly see them all stepping on a white, shaggy, mat lol.
During 2nd or 3rd season, there was a freak snowstorm in NC, and the camera crew went nuts running around trying to get establishing shots of all the locations with ACTUAL SNOW!
Came here to say this!
Yes, the one where Audrey wrecks Paceyās car into the Leery house! It looks like felt!
No I believe the exteriors for all the homes were based on real locations in North Carolina, where the show was filmed. However, they also had matching sets for inside the homes. So (depending on the scene), they would film the actors coming inside the real location, and then switch to the sets for additional shots, etc.
One Tree Hill did this too. On their podcast, Drama Queens, Hilarie and Sophia discussed having a fight scene in season 4, where they came inside the real home and accidentally scuffed up the walls of the house. The set designers also had to add a basement to Peytonās house for a scene, and Hilarie commented on how youāll never find the basement in the real house because itās fake.
That's so true. Houses here in nc don't have basements!
Unrelated, I used to have that shirt Pacey's wearing. It was from American Eagle.
Haha
Off topic, thereās no way Pacey Witter wore his backpack like that. He 100% is a one shoulder backpack guy. Not a side bag like Dawson. A backpack, slung loosely over one shoulder. Zero folders, and all his homework is folded three times and stuck in a pocket.
It was the style to wear it on both shoulders then
As someone who was in high school at the same time as the characters on the show, no it wasnāt.
I think it really depended on how heavy your backpack was. It was 'cool' to wear it one shoulder, but if your locker was far away and you had to haul a bunch of books even the most image obsessed would do two shoulders due to weight. Also it was pretty impossible to ride a bike with it on one shoulder, which is how Pacey got around a lot.
Iām so surprised to see these comments saying it was popular to wear both straps. I was in high school then, and using both straps was a sign you were terribly uncool. Almost everyone used one strap, even though it was so heavy and uncomfortable. I wonder if it was a regional thing.
As someone who was too- it was where I went to school.
I was also in h.s. at this time and it was soooo it could be both
I'm the exact same school year as the characters and it was def in style to wear it on just one shoulder where I was from! (Texas) That'd be an interesting 90s/early 2000s kids poll question: one shoulder or two! :-)
As an extra on Dawsonās Creek, I can confirm itās a real backyard and house.
Do you have any stories from that time?
Enjoying all the comments, but one note - this can't be S1E1. They hairstyles don't match.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is season 3, based on the wardrobe alone. That was the season where they all wore American Eagle clothes.
Its definitely season 3.
No I've been to Wilmington and it really is so beautiful that it looks fake. It's currently suffering from over-development though.
Tax break in NC

It is a real house you can even visit it. Im sure some stuff may have been done in a studio but I know its a real place. But im pretty sure its not in New england lol.
When I toured the studio - they had back drops of Dawsons house & the view outside- so they probably used the back drops some I even have some pictures of it :)
No, itās a real house and yard in North Carolina.
